Development projects: The Punjab Government
has sanctioned Rs 570.57 lakh for the various
development projects in the district Mr V.K.
Janjua, Deputy Commissioner, said Rs 311.31 lakh
has been released by Mr Manoranjan Kalia,
Minister for Health and Chairman District
Planning Board. Out of this Rs 71.28 lakh are for
old-age pension to 12,500 beneficiaries and Rs
3.9 lakh for nutrition to children below 6, and
expecting mothers. FEROZEPORE
Ex-servicemen welfare: The Ferozepore
Ex-servicemen Legion General Secretary, Mr N.K.
Dutta, in a statement issued here on Friday said
the welfare and privileges of ex-servicemen and
their families should not be looked down upon and
withdrawn when peace was established. He added
that their privileges and avenues of promotions
granted to them under the recruitment rules of
1965 were withdrawn with the implementation of
new rules in 1982. He also requested the Chief
Minister to enquire into the circumstances which
had to the framing of new rules.
GARHSHANKAR
Raped: A five-year-old girl of Muggowal
village here, was allegedly raped by Mohan Lal,
of the same village. The incident which took
place on June 25 was reported to the police on
June 29.
HOSHIARPUR
Liquor seized: CIA staff, Hoshiarpur,
arrested Satpal alias Pappu of Mand Bhandair and
recovered 840 bottles of countrymade liquor from
him while his accomplice Bhajan Lal of the local
Chhatta Bazar escaped.
LUDHIANA
Seminar: The District and Sessions Judge and
the Chairman of District Legal Services
Authority, Mr S.S.Arora, said here on Friday that
there was need for creating awareness among the
weaker sections to avail themselves of the
facility of free legal aid being provided by the
Punjab Legal Services Authority and to settle
disputes through the Lok Adalats. He also sought
the cooperation of panchayats, lambardars,
municipal councillors, advocates and other public
representatives in this regard. He was speaking
at a seminar organised by the District Legal
Services Authority.
Appointed:
Mr Mohan Singh Goga was appointed President of
the District unit of the All-India Youth Akali
Dal (urban) by its senior Vice-President Mr
Harjinder Singh Latti. Mr Harpreet Singh Dang has
been appointed General-Secretary.
MALERKOTLA
Arrested : The Malerkotla police has launched
a drive against anti social elements here. Mr
Surinder Singh Saini, DSP, said the police has
arrested Ramesh Kumar of Quadian, Megh Bahadur of
Rajpura, Ram Dass Sharma of Giddarbaha and
recovered sharp edge weapons from them. He
further said the police had seized 90 bottles of
illicit liquor from six persons all of whom had
been arrested. Cases had been registered against
them in the Malerkotla police station. Two other
persons had been arrested for gambling.
Drowned :
Mr Mohammad Nawab (24), a resident of Delhi Gate,
was drowned in the nearby Babbanpur Canal, here
on Wednesday. His body was fished out by the
villagers. According to reports he had gone to
Jabbomajra village about 10 km from here, with a
band party to attend a marriage.
MOGA
Power cuts: Frequent power cuts have resulted
in the stoppage of all industrial activities in
the town. Residents of the Civil Line area on
Friday complained that their electrical
appliances got burnt due to voltage fluctuation.
Mr Gurbachan Singh of new Civil Lines area
complained that his area was engulfed in darkness
for three days.
NAWANSHAHR
Suspended : The District Collector, Dr Roshan
Sunkaria, on Thursday suspended nearly 70
patwaris under Rule 8 of the Punjab Civil
Services (Punishment and Appeals) Rules 1970, for
remaining under detention for more than 48 hours
on account of violation of prohibitory orders
issued under Section 144 of the Cr PC, according
to an official press release issued here on
Friday.

Pak TV banned: The District Magistrate Mr
Anirudh Tewari has banned the transmission of
Pakistani channel programmes by the cable TV
operators till August 25.
Free legal
aid: Mr Charanjit Jawa, District and Sessions
Judge, speaking at a seminar on free legal aid,
held in the premises of the district court here
on Thursday said it was essential to provide free
legal aid to the weaker sections of the society
to enable them to seek justice. He also said that
during the past two years, nearly 600 persons
were provided free legal aid. Nearly 5500 cases
were settled in the Lok Adalats.
