FATEHGARH SAHIB
Development projects:
The Punjab Government has sanctioned Rs 570.57 lakh for the various development projects in the district Mr V.K. Janjua, Deputy Commissioner, said Rs 311.31 lakh has been released by Mr Manoranjan Kalia, Minister for Health and Chairman District Planning Board. Out of this Rs 71.28 lakh are for old-age pension to 12,500 beneficiaries and Rs 3.9 lakh for nutrition to children below 6, and expecting mothers.

FEROZEPORE
Ex-servicemen welfare:
The Ferozepore Ex-servicemen Legion General Secretary, Mr N.K. Dutta, in a statement issued here on Friday said the welfare and privileges of ex-servicemen and their families should not be looked down upon and withdrawn when peace was established. He added that their privileges and avenues of promotions granted to them under the recruitment rules of 1965 were withdrawn with the implementation of new rules in 1982. He also requested the Chief Minister to enquire into the circumstances which had to the framing of new rules.

GARHSHANKAR
Raped:
A five-year-old girl of Muggowal village here, was allegedly raped by Mohan Lal, of the same village. The incident which took place on June 25 was reported to the police on June 29.

HOSHIARPUR
Liquor seized:
CIA staff, Hoshiarpur, arrested Satpal alias Pappu of Mand Bhandair and recovered 840 bottles of countrymade liquor from him while his accomplice Bhajan Lal of the local Chhatta Bazar escaped.

LUDHIANA
Seminar:
The District and Sessions Judge and the Chairman of District Legal Services Authority, Mr S.S.Arora, said here on Friday that there was need for creating awareness among the weaker sections to avail themselves of the facility of free legal aid being provided by the Punjab Legal Services Authority and to settle disputes through the Lok Adalats. He also sought the cooperation of panchayats, lambardars, municipal councillors, advocates and other public representatives in this regard. He was speaking at a seminar organised by the District Legal Services Authority.

Appointed: Mr Mohan Singh Goga was appointed President of the District unit of the All-India Youth Akali Dal (urban) by its senior Vice-President Mr Harjinder Singh Latti. Mr Harpreet Singh Dang has been appointed General-Secretary.

MALERKOTLA
Arrested :
The Malerkotla police has launched a drive against anti social elements here. Mr Surinder Singh Saini, DSP, said the police has arrested Ramesh Kumar of Quadian, Megh Bahadur of Rajpura, Ram Dass Sharma of Giddarbaha and recovered sharp edge weapons from them. He further said the police had seized 90 bottles of illicit liquor from six persons all of whom had been arrested. Cases had been registered against them in the Malerkotla police station. Two other persons had been arrested for gambling.

Drowned : Mr Mohammad Nawab (24), a resident of Delhi Gate, was drowned in the nearby Babbanpur Canal, here on Wednesday. His body was fished out by the villagers. According to reports he had gone to Jabbomajra village about 10 km from here, with a band party to attend a marriage.

Power cuts:
Frequent power cuts have resulted in the stoppage of all industrial activities in the town. Residents of the Civil Line area on Friday complained that their electrical appliances got burnt due to voltage fluctuation. Mr Gurbachan Singh of new Civil Lines area complained that his area was engulfed in darkness for three days.

NAWANSHAHR
Suspended :
The District Collector, Dr Roshan Sunkaria, on Thursday suspended nearly 70 patwaris under Rule 8 of the Punjab Civil Services (Punishment and Appeals) Rules 1970, for remaining under detention for more than 48 hours on account of violation of prohibitory orders issued under Section 144 of the Cr PC, according to an official press release issued here on Friday.

Pak TV banned:
The District Magistrate Mr Anirudh Tewari has banned the transmission of Pakistani channel programmes by the cable TV operators till August 25.

Free legal aid: Mr Charanjit Jawa, District and Sessions Judge, speaking at a seminar on free legal aid, held in the premises of the district court here on Thursday said it was essential to provide free legal aid to the weaker sections of the society to enable them to seek justice. He also said that during the past two years, nearly 600 persons were provided free legal aid. Nearly 5500 cases were settled in the Lok Adalats. top

Contribution: The Panchkula police has decided to contribute one day's salary towards the Haryana Police War Heroes Relief Fund which amounts to Rs 1,88,625. After collection, this will be given to the Chief Minister's War Heroes Relief Fund.

PANCHKULA
Condolences:
Members of the women's front of the BJP, here on Friday, went to the residence of martyr Major Sandeep Sagar to express their condolences to the aggrieved family. The father of the Major, while talking to the General Secretary of the front, Ms Neelam Soni, said he was proud of his son for sacrificing his life while defending the nation. Ms Soni offered all possible support to the aggrieved family.

FATEHABAD
Congress grass :
The Deputy Commissioner, Mr V.Raja Shekhar, convened a meeting of officials of various government departments here on Thursday to review its drive to weed out congress grass. The DC asked the officials to ensure that the weed was de-weeded from the district by the end of July. He said directions had been issued to all municipal committees, anganwadi workers, village secretaries, patwaris and health workers to educate the masses regarding the ill-effects of congress grass and the need to destroy it.

BILASPUR
Clash:
Dhiyana Ram of Seola village, about 25 km from here, was killed while Kali Dass was injured when the families of the two persons clashed on Thursday over the construction of a house. Mr Anurag Garg, SP, said here on Friday that Kali Dass had been admitted to the district hospital whereas the body of Dhiyana Ram had been sent for post-mortem examination.

Budget approved : The Bilaspur zila parishad at its meeting held here, on Thursday approved a Budget of Rs 42.35 lakh for developmental projects in various panchayat areas of the district. Extension officers of Agriculture and Horticulture Department were directed to regularly attend all panchayat and gram sabha meetings and inform the farmers about the latest developments in the field of agriculture.

DHARAMSALA
Suicide :
A 35-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a Joginder Nagar-bound train at Kandrodi village in Kangra district on Thursday. The police has identified the deceased as Kala.

NURPUR
Raid:
Officials of the Nurpur forest division raided the premises of a private resin factory at Surajpur Mohlti and seized 53 tins of illicit resin on Thursday. Most of the tins were bearing the mark of HP Forest Corporation. The Indora police has registered an FIR under Section 379 of the IPC and the Forest Act 41,42.

SHIMLA
Intervention sought:
Mr S.R.Mehrotra, a former professor of History in the HP University, has termed the action of Mr Virbhadra Singh leader of the Congress Legislature Party, in seeking the intervention of the Governor, Ms V.S.Rama Devi, to stall the appointment of teachers, as highly improper and injudicious. In a letter to the Governor, he has pointed out that appointments to teaching posts were made by the Executive Council on the recommendation of the statutory selection committee and both the bodies included nominees of the Chancellor. Further, the proceedings of the Selection Committee were confidential and he wondered how Mr Virbhadra Singh came to knew about them.
