DERA BASSI
College function:
A function to mark the tercentenary of the birth of the Khalsa was organised at Government College, Dera Bassi, on Thursday which was presided over by Mr Kashmir Singh Gill, DPI, Colleges, Punjab. Inter-college 'shabad' singing and an exhibition of books and paintings pertaining to Sikh history were the highlights of the function.

HOSHIARPUR
Meeting:
A meeting of the Punjab Chowkidar Union was held at gurdwara Kalgidhar here on Thursday. Mr R.P. Mittal, SSP, Hoshiarpur, who was the chief guest, said the village chowkidars were the backbone of administration. Mr Karam Chand Saini, general secretary of the union, urged the state government to accept the demands of chowkidars.

KHARAR
Plea
: The Youth Welfare and Development Club of the nearby Tira village, in a letter to the Punjab Chief Minister on Wednesday, demanded immediate steps to save a causeway constructed on the Tira-Togan-Dhanas road. The causeway was constructed by the Punjab Government at an estimated cost of Rs 12-13 lakh. The supporting stones of the causeway have been washed away and this might affect the causeway in the coming rainy season and pose problems for residents of nearby villages.

MANSA
Pensioners' front:
A meeting of the recently formed common front of pensioners was held on Thursday at the district treasury office and the pensioners decided to intensify their stir. Their demands, include enhanced medical allowance, increase in service for those having more than 33 years of service and grant of house maintenance allowance.

Laboratory technicians: The Medical Laboratory Technicians Association has decided to stay away from emergency duty from February onwards if their demands were not accepted by the Pay Anomaly Committee, according to Mr Sikander Singh, state president of the association. The association has also sought free accommodation facility and risk allowance.

MOGA
Residents' demand:
Residents of the Akalsar road area and the nearby localities submitted a memorandum to the district administration on Thursday, demanding immediate removal of a slaughter house there as it was causing inconvenience to the residents. The residents also threatened to stage a dharna if the authorities failed to shift the slaughter house immediately.

3 kg radish: A vegetable grower of a nearby village has grown a radish weighing 3.70 kg and a carrot measuring 37 cm. He displayed them here at a vegetable shop on Friday.

Scooterist killed: An unidentified person was killed on the spot near Jhakharwala village, about 67 km from here, when his scooter had a head-on collision with a car, according to reports received on Thursday night. A case has been registered.

Lions Club:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the Lions Club Patiala Vishal: President — Mr OP Chopra; Secretary — Mr SK Kochhar; and Treasurer — Mr BK Talwar.

Died: Radhabai, mother of a former Minister, Mr Raj Khurana, died here on Thursday after a prolonged illness. She was 80. Former Chief Minister, Rajinder Kaur Bhattal and Former Minister Tej Prakash Singh have condoled her death.

Demanded:
Mr Mukhtar Singh, honorary secretary of the managing committee of the Guru Gobind Singh Khalsa College, Sarhali, has requested the Deputy Commissioner of Amritsar, and other officials concerned to impose a ban on holding of any function at the college campus because of an ongoing tussle between the college managing committee and some persons of the area.

Pedestrian killed: Mr Balkar Singh (35), a resident of Jaura village and an employee of the local Cooperative Sugar Mills Sheron, was killed in a road accident near Chutala village, 4 km from here, on Wednesday. He was going on foot when some vehicle hit him. He succumbed to the injuries on way to the local Civil Hospital. The police has registered a case.top

Elected: Mr Satpal, President, Chandigarh District Rural Congress (S), has been elected President of the Manimajra Janata Market Committee. He defeated Mr Kalka Prasad by getting 231 votes against 106 by his opponent.

PANCHKULA
Conference:
The Sanjha Chetna Manch will organise a conference of investors and agents of various non-banking companies at Shivalik Enclave, Manimajra, on January 31.

Nominated: Mr Devinder Kumar Jain has been nominated as the President of the Kalka City Cell of the Traders Cell of the District Congress Committee.

Ambulance service: Mr Raj Kumar Gupta, cashier of the local Aggarwal Sabha, in a press note said an ambulance service for the township would be started within the next fortnight.top

GURGAON
Open recruitment:
Mr A.S. Negi, independent recruiting officer Delhi Cantonment, has said that open recruitment for all categories would be held on January 30 at the Police Lines grounds here. He said eligible candidates should report there along with their documents.

Dharna: Members of the Hero Honda Workers Union staged a dharna in front of the factory in support of their demands. They were demanding the withdrawal of dismissal orders of their president Rajbir Singh Chahal and suspension of seven other workers of the factory.

KAITHAL
Truck found:
A truck loaded with rice worth Rs 8 lakh was found abandoned near Pai village. The truck had been reportedly stolen from the Kaithal-Jind road recently. The SP, Mr Sudhir Choudhry, said the police had impounded the truck. Forensic experts have also been called to inspect the vehicle to get some clues about the driver and cleaner of the truck.

PANIPAT
Two injured:
Two persons were injured in a quarrel over the movement of bullock carts in Vikas Nagar on Thursday. One person was injured with a sharp-edged weapon while the other received a bullet injury.

SIRSA
Foundation stone:
Mr Inder Singh, SDM, Sirsa, laid the foundation stone of the Government Girls Senior Secondary School building here on Thursday. A sum of Rs 2 lakh was given by Kumari Selja, former Union Minister, for the construction of the building.

SONEPAT
Fresh survey sought:
Mr Azad Singh Nehra, general secretary of the Haryana Pradesh Youth Congress, alleged on Thursday that the lists of people living below the poverty line which were prepared by the state government were not 'authentic'. He urged the state government to take a serious note of the public complaints in this regard and order a fresh survey of such people.

Memorandum: Mr R.S. Dahiya, a social activist sent a memorandum to Mr Bansi Lal, Chief Minister, on Thursday demanding a probe into the selling of kerosene in the black market by a wholesale dealer of the city. He alleged that two tankers of kerosene had been 'sold' in the black market.

Maha yajna: The Shri Sunderkand Yajna Samiti will organise a three-day Shri Sunderkand maha yajna and sankirtan mahotsava from February 5 at Nehru Park, Gita Colony, in the city. Dr Swami Divyanand "Bhikhshu Ji" Maharaj, of Tapovan Hardwar, will perform the maha yajna. The purnahtis of yajna will take place on February 7 and will be followed by a bhandara.

Guru maha sammelan: A one-day guru maha sammelan will be held on the premises of the Prem Nagar Durga Ashram in Durga Colony on February 20. Founder of the ashram Saroj Mata Ji Maharaj will preside over the sammelan. Bhagwati jagrans will be held and followed by a "bhandara" on February 21.

Annual sammelan: The Tehsil Kot Addu Biradari will organise its annual sammelan at the Biradari bhavan in the Rishi Nagar area on January 31. Delegates from Delhi and other neighbouring states will take part in the sammelan. top

BILASPUR
Training camp:
A four-week screen printing training camp for educated unemployed youths was inaugurated by the Director of the Small Industries Services Institute, Chambaghat, Mr S.P. Madher, here on Thursday. The camp was attended by 27 youths. The General Manager of the District Industries Centre, Mr Suresh Sharma, said the camp had been organised by the Industries Ministry in collaboration with the Small Industries Services Institute and the District Industries Centre.

Cases decided: A 'prashashan janata ke dwar shivir' was held at Gandhir, 45 km from here, on Thursday. Ninetyeight cases were decided on the spot out of a total of 316 cases presented by villagers in the camp. Remaining 218 cases were referred to officers concerned. The HP Cooperative Minister, Mr Rikhiram Kaundal presided over the camp.

KULU
Hawker killed:
Subhash Chauhan (40), a newspaper hawker, was run over by an oil tanker at Shashtri Nagar here on Thursday when he was distributing papers. The deceased is survived by his wife and two children.
