More HC judges appointed
CHANDIGARH, Jan 29 (TNS) The Union Government
has approved the appointment of two more persons as
judges of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, it is
reliably learnt. They are the Advocate-General of
Haryana, Mr Hawa Singh Hooda, and the Sessions Judge of
Haryana, Mr B.S. Gulati. The Centre had yesterday
approved the appointment of four persons. They are Mr
Amar Datt, Sessions Judge of the Punjab cadre, Mr A.S.
Garg and Mr V.M. Jain, both Sessions Judges of the
Haryana cadre, and Mr Jagdish Kher, a leading high court
advocate. All these four persons got themselves medically
examined yesterday. They are likely to be sworn in on
Monday. With the retirement of Mr Justice B. Rai today,
the strength of the high court judges had depleted to 22
against the sanctioned strength of 40. With the
appointment of six more judges, the strength will go up
to 28.
Clinton talks to
PM
NEW DELHI, Jan 29 (PTI) US President Bill Clinton
tonight spoke to Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee on
the telephone and reviewed the relations between the two
countries. Mr Clinton also extended greetings on
Indias Republic Day. Mr Vajpayee told Mr Clinton
that he was keenly following the ongoing dialogue between
External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh and the US
delegation led by Deputy Secretary of State Strobe
Talbott, official sources said here.
IOC chief
MADRID, Jan 29 (DPA) International Olympic
Committee (IOC) President Juan Antonio Samaranch (78) has
resigned as chairman of Spain's biggest savings bank, La
Caixa, media reports said today. He announced his
resignation at a meeting of the bank's Board of Directors
in Barcelona yesterday. Reports said the bank might have
wanted to avoid being tainted by the corruption scandal
rocking the committee.
20 rebels killed
PRISTINA, Jan 29 (AP) The police clashed today
with ethnic Albanian rebels in Rogovo village in Kosovo
near the Albanian border, 70 km from here killing 20
guerrillas, Serb sources said. A policeman also was
reported killed. The fresh fighting erupted as western
powers were meeting in London to call an international
conference to resolve the ethnic conflict in the Serbian
province and threaten the parties with NATO force if they
refused.
2 US F-15s collide
EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE (Florida), Jan 29 (AP) A pair
of US F-15 Eagle fighter jets collided yesterday and
crashed into the Gulf of Mexico. The fate of the two
pilots was not immediately known. The jets from the 53rd
Wing, which tests operational weapons and electronic
warfare equipment at Elgin Air Force base were on a
training mission when they collided, the US Air Force
said in a press note.
11 LTTE men killed
COLOMBO, Jan 29 (AFP) Helicopter gunships attacked
a flotilla of Tamil rebel boats in northern Sri Lanka
today, killing at least 11 guerrillas and wounding two
others, the Defence Ministry said. Air Force MI-24 gun
ships attacked a concentration of LTTE boats off
Gurunagar in the Jaffna peninsula, one of the helicopters
being damaged when rebels returned fire, the ministry
said.
