AMRITSAR
Mass marriages: Marriages of six poor girls were performed at a ceremony organised by the Rotary Club Amritsar Mid-Town here on Sunday. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Narinder Jit Singh, blessed the newly married couples. The District Governor of the club, Mr Arun Kapur, said that the club gave gifts to the couples.

BATHINDA
Eight injured: Eight persons were injured when a truck in which they were travelling hit a tree near Jodhpur village, 15 km from here, on Sunday. According to Mr Vijay Goyal, President, Sahara Welfare Club, all the injured were shifted to the Civil Hospital. He said the driver of the truck, whose condition was stated to be serious, was under the influence of liquor.

FARIDKOT
Convention:
The Punjab Recognised and Affiliated School Association will hold a state-level convention on education at Ludhiana on February 6. More than 400 students will participate. Education Minister Tota Singh will be the chief guest. Mr Jagdish Rai Sharma, President of the association said this here on Monday.

FAZILKA
Two killed:
Haryana Roadways Bus driver Sukhvinder Singh (37) and Simranjit Kaur (30) were killed and 18 others were injured when the roadways bus rammed into a private bus parked at a bus stand of Mahuana Bodla village, 20 km from, here on Sunday. The injured were admitted to local civil hospital.

FEROZEPORE
Caught red handed :
Two officials posted in the office of the Sub Divisional Magistrate at Jalalabad — Chan Singh Ahlmad and Sharaj Singh Sewadar — were caught while they were taking a bribe of Rs 2000 from Mr Fauja Singh, according to the SP.

FATEHGARH SAHIB
Insured:
The Lions Club, Mandi Gobindgarh , has got 170 rickshaw-pullers of the town insured under the janata personal accident insurance scheme, according to Mr Manmohan Kaushal, President of the club. The club also provided shoes to more than 120 needy students in various schools.

HOSHIARPUR

Two die in mishap: The driver of a car and a 10-year-old boy were killed when the vehicle dashed against a private bus (PAG 1887) near the Beant College of Engineering and Technology here on Saturday. The driver of the bus has been arrested and the vehicle impounded.

JALANDHAR

Run for fun: A "run for fun" was organised at Jalandhar cantonment on Sunday to celebrate Republic Day. The run was flagged off by Lieut-Gen Kamal Davar, General Officer Commanding, Vajra Corps, at Katoch Stadium. All ranks in the station and children participated in the event.

KAPURTHALA
Procession:
Workers of the Hindu Shiv Sena took out a procession in the town on Monday in protest against the spiralling prices, corruption and deteriorating law and order in the state. They presented a memorandum to Mr S.S. Bains, Additional Deputy Commissioner. Later they held a rally in front of Deputy Commissioner's office and burnt the effigy of Mr Parkash Singh Badal.

Post vacant:
A member of the central executive committee of the PSEB Engineers Association, Mr S.C. Chabba, has criticised the Punjab State Electricity Board authorities for not appointing a full time Chief Engineer at the local Guru Gobind Singh Super Thermal Plant. He said here today that the post had been lying vacant since November 30.

In-laws booked:
A case has been registered against in-laws of Sulochana of Manawali village for allegedly poisoning her to death on a complaint lodged by her father, Mahinder Singh, who was informed of the death by a relative on Saturday.

GURGAON
Rape attempt:
The Bilaspur police has registered a case of attempt to rape a minor girl on the complaint of her father against Paramvir, night watchman of the general hospital of national security guard, Manesar.

Bail plea fails: Mr Randhir Singh, Additional District Sessions Judge, here has rejected the bail application of Shreepal, Harchand, Ravinder and Kale of Baupur village. The had allegedly tried to kill two persons of the same village. They were remanded in 14 days' judicial custody.

HISAR
Dharna by nurses: Members of the Nursing Staff Association, Haryana, staged a dharna in front of the resident of Mr Om Parkash Mahajan, Health Minister, on Sunday. Mrs Jasbir Kaur, President of the association said Mr Mahajan had promised that their demands would be accepted after the end of their strike. The association submitted a memorandum to the minister demanding the reinstatement of all nurses dismissed for participating in the strike.

Convict dead: Ram Kishan, a life convict, died of a heart attack here on Saturday night. According to Central Jail sources, he died on the way to the Civil Hospital. He was a resident of Sighrar village in Hisar district.

KARNAL
Quiz contest:
The Commerce Association of Dyal Singh College here organised an inter-college quiz contest on the subject of "India's problems and achievements". Thirteen teams from local colleges and from Panipat and Yamunanagar participated. Mr Akashdeep Singh and Amit Mittal of Dyal Singh College got the first prize.

SIRSA
Ad hoc teachers:
A meeting of members of the District Ad hoc Teachers Sangh was held under the Chairmanship of Lalimohan Sharma here on Sunday. The sangh said in case services of ad hoc teachers were not regularised. They would launch a statewide agitation.

Brothers hurt: Jagdish Chander and his brother Naresh, both farmers of Khuian village here were seriously injured in a clash between two groups on Sunday. According to sources Jagdish Kumar had hired a tractor of Uttam Chand for two months. But Uttam Chand was not satisfied with the payment made by him and assaulted Jagdish and his brother when they were going to their fields.

Arrested: Bhola Ram Bazigar of Rani, about 20 km from here, was arrested in a criminal case on Saturday. The police conducted a raid on Bazigar Mohalla and seized 1.9 kg of opium from Bhola Ram. The police has registered a case against the accused.

Poppy husk seized: Mohinder Kumar of Khokar village in Sirsa district was arrested on Saturday and 6.6 kg of poppy husk was seized from his possession. The police has registered a case under the NDPS Act against the accused.

SONEPAT
Jain ceremony:
People belonging to the Jain community thronged, Gohana town, 35 km from here on Sunday, to witness the "deeksha" ceremony of two youths — Ravinder and Manoj who became Jain sadhus. The Haryana Food and Supplies Minister, Mr Ganeshi Lal, was also present on this occasion. Earlier the youths were taken in a procession which passed through the main bazars of the town.
