‘Make report on J&K autonomy public’

NEW DELHI, Feb 17 (PTI) — Former Working Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Regional Autonomy Committee Balraj Puri today asked the Farooq Abdullah Government to make public the interim report submitted by the committee some months ago.

Expressing concern about the “unusual” delay in making the report public, Mr Puri, who was sacked last month, said there were “serious doubts” about the sincerity of the Abdullah administration in giving regional autonomy to the state.

“The regional autonomy seemed to be a distant dream for people of the state,” Mr Puri said in a statement here.

He said while framing the report he had kept in mind the political, cultural and economic diversities of the region.

Mr Abdullah, while taking the oath in October, 1996, had said regional autonomy would be accorded to the three regions of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh within a year.

Stressing that regional autonomy was an essential pre-requisite for peace and balanced development in the state, Mr Puri warned any further delay in its implementation would lead to fresh complications in solving the Kashmir problem.
