AMRITSAR
Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the local branch of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India: Chairman — Mr H.S. Goolry; Vice-Chairman — Mr Ashwani Kalia; Secretary — Mr Davinder Singh; and Treasurer — Mr Jasbir Singh.

BATHINDA
Lucky draws banned: Mr S.R Ladhar, District Magistrate, on Friday imposed a ban up to March 31, 1999 on the lucky draw scheme running in the district without any legal authorisation.

Electoral rolls: The revision of electoral rolls for panchayats, panchayat samitis and zila parishads has started in the district. In a press note issued here on Friday, Mr Alok Shekhar, Additional Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Election Officer, said according to the direction of the state election commission the first voter's list had been published on February 8. February 23 has been fixed as the last date for entertaining claims and objections regarding the list.

Old age homes: The Punjab Government Pensioners Association has urged the Centre and the Punjab Government to open an old age home and four clinics for the pensioners in the district. This was stated by Mr Kishan Singh, General Secretary of the association, here on Friday.

Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Sarb Sanjhi Naujawan Sabha, Guru Nanak Pura; Bathinda: President — Mr Sikander Singh; Vice-President — Mr Amarjit Singh; Secretary — Mr Ranjit Singh; and Treasurer — Mr Amar Singh.

FAZILKA
Protest march: Members of the Government-Aided Schools Teachers Union of the Ferozepore unit took out a protest march in the town on Friday in support of their demands. They submitted the memorandum of demands to the SDM, Fazilka.

Body found: The body of Pardeep Kumar, alias Deepa, a local resident, was found near Khakheki village, 25 km from here, in Gang canal. The boy had been missing since February 3.

GURDASPUR
Development: Nearly Rs 2 crore will be spent for the development of border areas in the district. This was stated by Mr Sucha Singh Langah, Minister of State for Industries, at an open darbar held on Friday at Rosse village. Mr S.K. Sandhu, Deputy Commissioner, and Mr Lok Nath, SSP, Batala, were also present.

HOSHIARPUR
Kandi area dams: A team comprising six high ranking officials will visit Dholbaha and Perch dams in Kandi areas of Ropar and Hoshiarpur districts on Monday to study the water harvesting structure of these dams.

Antisocial elements: The police here arrested Parveen Kumar of Naili Baghwar, Bhoranj district, Hamirpur and seized 170 kg of poppy husk from him. Mr R.P. Mittal, SSP, said here on Friday that this was a part of the drive against antisocial elements.

JALANDHAR
Forum: The following have been elected office-bearers of the local division of the United Forum of Insurance Employees: Chairman — Mr G.S. Chopra; Vice-Chairmen — Mr A.P. Dhawan and Mr S.S. Ratti; Secretary — Mr Jiwan Singh; and Treasurer — Mr Surinder Kumar.

Society: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Kartarpur Social Welfare Society: Chairman — Mr Daljit Singh Ahluwalia; Vice- Chairman — Mr Yogeshwar Gupta; President — Mr Sukhdev Singh Bhullar; Senior Vice-President — Mr Nirmal Singh Nandra; Vice-President — Mr Amrit Lal Sharma; and General Secretary — Mr Mehar Chand.

LUDHIANA
Dental camp: A free dental check-up camp was held here on Friday at the Senior Citizens Home for the students of Bal Bhavan and the Deaf and Dumb School. About 80 patients were examined and medicines free of cost were distributed.

Dharna: The Revenue Patwari Union held a dharna for the second consecutive day at the secretariat here on Friday against the non-acceptance of their demands. These included the implementation of the new pay scales and new promotion scales.

MALERKOTLA
Spurious cassettes: The local police on Thursday raided some music shops here and seized a number of spurious cassettes. Mr Atma Singh, SHO, city kotwali, said the police raided Milan Music House, Meet Music Centre and Nandan Radios and arrested their owners Mohammad Sadiq, Jarnail Singh and Mohammad Halim, respectively. A case under Section 420, IPC, Sections 51,52,63, 64,66 and 68-A of the Copyright Act, 1957 and Sections 78 and 79 of the Trade Merchandise Act, 1958, has been registered.

NCC wing: An NCC wing of 3 Punjab Girls Battalion has been raised at the local DAV Senior Secondary School. Ms Rehana Salim has been appointed the associate officer of the wing.

PATIALA
Appointments: Dr Malikiat Singh, Principal of the local Government Dental Medical College and Hospital, has been appointed the Dean of Faculty of Dental Sciences, Punjabi University, for two years. Dr Pushap Paul Singh has been appointed Head of the Hindi department and Dr S.K Arora as Head of the Commerce department.

Website facility: About 256 persons have taken help of the website facility provided at the district headquarters. This was stated by Mr Jasbir Singh Bir, Deputy Commissioner. He added that information regarding hospitals, medical and engineering institutions etc was also available.

Suicide attempt: Malkiat Singh of Rajpura allegedly tried to commit suicide by consuming acid on Thursday. He was taken to the hospital in a serious condition. A case has been registered.

Association: The following have been elected office-bearers of the state body of the Punjab Engineering Drawing Staff Association (Public Health) here: President — Mr Subhash Puri; Senior Vice-Presidents — Mr Om Parkash and Mr Gurdev Singh Charn; Vice-Presidents — Mr Avtar Singh and Mr Inder Mohan Malik; General Secretaries — Mr Gurpreet Singh, Mr Babu Ram and Mr Himmat Singh.

Eye camp: The Lions Club (Ghagga) will organise an eye operation camp at Ghagga village on Sunday, according to a press note issued here recently.

SAMRALA
Eye check-up camp: A free eye check-up camp was held at Hambol Bet village on Thursday by the Guru Nanak Sports Club in which 470 patients were examined.

Patwaris' dharna: Patwaris of the tehsil sat on a dharna here on Friday in front of the local tehsil courts. They sought the acceptance of their demands, failing which they threatened to sit on fast.top

Medical camp: A medical camp in memory of a deceased son of Mr Jagpal Chaudhary, a former minister, was organised at Rally village in Sector 12-A here on Saturday. The MP from Ambala Mr Aman Kumar Nagra, inaugurated the camp.

AMBALA
Annual function: The annual day and prize distribution function of Kendriya Vidyalaya No 1 in the cantonment was held here on Thursday. Mr J.D. Kalra, Assistant Commissioner, Kendriya Vidyalayas, presided. A cultural programme was presented by students.

KURUKSHETRA
Declamation contest: Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalya, Niwarsi, clinched the running trophy at the Babu Niranjan Parkash Inter-School and College Declamation Contest organised by Sugni Devi Arya Girls Senior Secondary School, Ladwa, 15 km from here, on Thursday. The District Education Officer, Mr S.P.S. Yadav, was the chief guest.

SIRSA
Two arrested: Kalu Ram, alias Jaipal, and Prem Kukar of Kheowali village in the district were arrested by the police on Thursday. A spokesman of the police said the accused made a murderous assault on his son and threatened to kill him. A case under Sections 323, 506 and 34, IPC, was registered.

One held: Dayaram of Fatheria Niyamat Khan village in the district was arrested under the Arms Act by the police on Thursday. A spokesman of the police said here on Friday that one pistol was recovered from him.

Arrested: Jagdish Bishnoi of Jandwala village in Mandi Dabwali subdivision was arrested by the Sadar police on Thursday for allegedly outraging the modesty of a woman of the same village. A case under Sections 323 and 354, IPC, has been registered.

SONEPAT
Probe sought: The district unit of the Kisan Samiti on Thursday urged the Haryana Government to order a high-level probe into the preparation of bogus muster rolls by certain officials of the Sonepat Water Service Division in connection with the deweeding of Badhana and Bagru minors. In a press note issued here it alleged that the deweeding operations had been carried out by "beldars".
