Gandhi Peace Prize for Ramakrishna Mission
CALCUTTA, Feb 13 (PTI) — The Gandhi Peace Prize for 1998, carrying a cash amount of Rs 1 crore, was today conferred on the Ramakrishna Mission by the President, Mr K.R. Narayanan. This is the first time an institution has got the prize. The prize, carrying a citation and a plaque besides the amount, was received by the 13th President of the math, Swami Ranganathananda, at a simple ceremony at Durbar Hall of Raj Bhavan here.

Hooch tragedy
ARA (Bihar), Feb 13 (PTI) — The death toll in Bihar's Bhojpur district hooch tragedy rose to 26 tonight with 14 more deaths reported today at Ara Sadar Hospital, the police said. District Superintendent of Police, Rajkumar Mallick, said there was every possibility of more deaths as many of those taken ill were in a serious condition while 10 persons died at Kharaicha village, Ratnar accounted for nine deaths.

9 armymen killed
GUWAHATI, Feb 13 (PTI) — Nine Army personnel, including a doctor, were killed in an ambush by insurgents in Manipur’s Churachandpur district today, according to Army sources here. The sources said a medical team of the Rashtriya Rifles which was moving in the Tuilaphai area of the district was ambushed by insurgents near Thingkeu village. An Army doctor, who was incharge of the team, and eight others were killed on the spot. The medical unit was moving to the interior areas of the district to provide medical aid to villagers as part of civic action programme.

Gangsters shot
MUMBAI, Feb 13 (PTI) — The Police foiled a bid to murder a businessman by gunning down a gangster late last night, taking the number of criminals killed in encounters in the metropolis during the past 24 hours to three. The police said Rajesh Rai, owing allegiance to Arun Gawli Gang, was shot dead at Mulund in North-East Mumbai. On a tip off that Rai and his associate would arrive near the Mulund fire-brigade station to murder a businessman, the police laid a trap.

Heroin seized
MUMBAI, Feb 13 (PTI) — Six kg of heroin, valued at Rs 6 crore in the international market, has been seized from a Ghanian woman passenger at Mumbai Airport by Customs Revenue and intelligence officials. The 40-year-old woman was intercepted when she checked in for an Ethiopian Airlines flight bound for Accra on Thursday, Customs officials said here today.Top
