Eye camp: The camp organised by the district Blindness Control Society concluded here recently. Baba Bakala, Ajnala, Marri, Patti and Amte villages were covered in a drive launched by the society. The programme manager, Capt Jageer Singh, said 4,665 patients got their eyes checked and 539 of them underwent cataract operations.

BATHINDA
Cyclone relief: Mr S. Marriya, Principal, DAV College, said here on Wednesday that staff and students of the college had contributed Rs 75,000 for the Prime Minister's Orissa cyclone relief fund.

FEROZEPORE
Traffic rules:
Raiding parties to be headed by the SDMs concerned have been formed to give a practical shape to traffic rules . This was stated here by the Additional Deputy Commissioner while addressing a meeting held here on Wednesday.

Clerk caught: Kulwant Singh, a clerk working at office of the Assistant Registrar of the, Cooperative societies was caught red handed here on Wednesday for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 1,000 from Mr Gulzar Singh.

JALANDHAR
Camp organised: The State Bank of Patiala, Shahkot branch and the Mast Ram Lal Charitable Trust, Shahkot, has organised a free eye check-up and operation camp. The Deputy General Manager of the local State Bank of Patiala, Mr S.P. Mittal, inaugurated the camp.

KAPURTHALA
Accident: Kulbir Singh (21), a resident of Khiranwali village was killed when his scooter collided with a tractor trailer, here on Tuesday.

Child recovered: A new born female child was found in a garbage at Bhano Langa village on Tuesday. The sarpanch of the village got the child admitted to the local civil hospital.

PATIALA
Bank quiz: The quiz contests organised by the State Bank of Patiala concluded here recently. The contest was won by a team from Delhi. The Chief General Manager, Mr M.Sitaramamurty, distributed the prizes. The bank plans to start inter-bank programmes in order to enhance the knowledge of its employees working in the state, he added.

Distributed: The local Shri Dasondhi Ram Birji Foundation has distributed 21 sweaters and six pairs of shoes among the students of the Government Girls Senior Secondary School, old Police Lines. Mrs Bala Gupta, grand daughter-in-law of Mr Mohan Lal Gupta, Advocate and Chairman of the foundation , distributed sweaters and shoes among the children.

Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Asani Punjabi Samaj: secretary — Mr R.D.Puri; organising secretary — Mr Surjit Singh; finance and public relation secretary — Mr Jaspaul Singh ; legal counseller — Mr Dhanpat 'Rai; and aandolan secretary — Mr Joginder Paul.

PHILLAUR
Workshop concludes:
A training workshop on Human Rights of Refugees concluded here on Wednesday at the Punjab Police Academy, Phillaur. The workshop was conducted by the experts of the UN Commission for Refugees and was meant for the gazetted police officers. Mr Chander Shekhar, IGP, of the academy highlighted the importance of awareness regarding human rights issues as perceived from international point of view. The refugees issue was required to be understood with the help of the UN guidelines and conventions, and awareness concerning these parameters will enhance the horizons of our police officers, he added.

Camp:
About 270 patients were examined and given medicines at a free medical check-up camp organised by the Lions Club Chandigarh Greater at its multi-purpose project building at Karsan on Thursday. Free X-ray, ECG and blood testing facilities were also provided to the patients.

School celebrations: St Soldier International School, Sector 28, celebrated its Founder Day on Thursday. Speeches and poems on the life and teachings of Guru Gobind Singh were read out on the occasion.

Appointed: The Chandigarh Administration has appointed Mr Harvinder Singh Katoch, a pharmacist at General Hospital in Sector 16, as Registrar of the Pharmacy Council of UT Chandigarh.

Contest: Lions Club Panchkula Central organised a peace poster contest at Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 15, on Thursday. Ms Shashi Kothiala was the chief guest.

Akali Dal charge: The Shiromani Akali Dal (Panthic) has alleged that the Vajpayee-led government at the Centre had not given due representation to the Sikh community at the top positions. Condemning the government for its approach, it further said that Mr Sukhdev Singh Dhinsa was given the portfolio, which could have benefited Punjab.

Science Congress: Daljit Kaur, a student of Sant Isher Singh Model Senior Secondary School, Phase 7 here, will represent Punjab at the a five-day ‘National Children Science Congress’ scheduled to be held at Goa from December 27. A spokesman of the school said the project of Daljit had been selected from among four best projects presented at the state level science congress held recently at Chandigarh.top

HISAR
Patwari dead: The body of Rajesh Kumar (28) of Khjanda village was recovered from a drain near Bass village, 40 km from here on Wednesday. He was posted as patwari at Prem Nagar village.

Road accident: One person was killed and three others were injured when a jeep carrying them dashed against a tree on Puthi-Rohnat road in Hansi sub-division on Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as Padam Singh of Gaziabad and the three injured Satpal Subhash and Araj Kumar have been hospitalised.

KAITHAL
Three killed:
Three persons were killed and one was seriously injured in three road accidents that had taken place in the district since last two days. Parveen (8), a student was killed at Mundri village when he was hit by a Tata Sumo while he was on his way to his home from a school. Jai Pal Singh and Harbans were killed on Tuesday when their motor-cycle was hit by a truck. In another accident Bharat (14) of Model Town was injured when he was hit by a truck near octroi post. He was admitted to the civil hospital with serious head injuries.

Camp concludes: A four-day free eye check-up camp organised by the Sewa Sangh at Kirpal Ashram concluded here on Wednesday. A team of eye surgeons performed 102 operations and 1,000 patients were examined for various eye ailments. Mr Narinder Singh SDM, urged the organisation to start a training centre for the physically handicapped persons and assured the sangh of a government land for this purpose.

KURUKSHETRA
Vande matram campaign: The Registrar of Kurukshetra University, Mr Vineet Garg, inaugurated a ‘vande matram’ campaign at the University college of Education complex here on Tuesday. The two-day programme organised at the college included essay competition and patriotic songs. The Department of Youth and Sports, Human Resources Ministry, Union Government, is organising a month-long programme throughout the country from December 11 to commemorate the birth of Rashtriya Kavi Sri Subraminaha Bharti and will conclude on January 1,2000, the date of birth of Swami Vivekanand.

Appointed: The Kurukshetra University Teachers Association (KUTA) organised a function to honour the Pro Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof Hoshiar Singh in the teachers club here on Tuesday. A large number of teachers attended the function.

SIRSA
Electricity theft:
The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Anil Jha has said a fine of Rs 1.49 lakh was imposed as fine in 13 electricity theft cases detected during the last month. Nearly 538 new electrical connections has been given during the previous month and six new transformers has been installed to ensure better electricity supply to the farmers and 2.1 km of high tension and 1.5 km of low tensions lines has been laid for this purpose.

Two arrested: Bahadur and his son Subhash were arrested for beating Savitri Devi of Jamal village in the district. According to the police press note issued here on Wednesday the duo were arrested under Sections 324, 323, 452 and 34 of the IPC. The mother and daughter had already been arrested in the same case.

Overstaying of bail: Raju Paharia of the local E-Block, who was absconding since 1994, has been arrested. He has snatched a gold chain of Raj Rani of the same colony. Harnek Singh of Pipli village , Sham Lal of Abohar and a proclaimed offender of Kharian village were arrested for overstaying the duration of the bail. In another case a tractor driver, Thana Singh of Maujgarh village was arrested under sections 329, 336 and 304-A of the IPC. He was absconding since December 14 after he met with an accident in which a lady was killed.

SONEPAT
Two held for rape: The Kharkhauda police has registered a case of alleged kidnapping and rape against two persons of Thana Kalan village, following an FIR lodged by Mrs Saroj a resident of the same village here on Wednesday. No arrest has been made so far.

Demonstration: Employees of the Octroi Department held a demonstration in front of the municipal council's office here on Thursday in protest against the non-payment of their salaries.

Assaulted: Rameshwar was allegedly assaulted by a youth while he was going to his house at Ganaur town, 16 km from here on Wednesday. The youth also snatched Rs 1,000 from him and fled away.

Entry banned: A quarrel between two contractors of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh has led to a ban on the entry of trucks and tractors loaded with sand into Haryana from UP near Garh Mirakhpur a village along the Yamuna near here on Thursday. According to a report the sand was being taken for sale to Sonepat and Delhi without obtaining prior permission.

Prisoner assaulted: Sukhvinder, a prisoner sustained injuries when he was assaulted by a group of prisoners in the district jail here on Wednesday. The injured prisoner was taken to the civil hospital. An enmity between the two rival groups is said to be the cause of the assault.

Boycott threatened: Residents of Kalupur village in this district have threatened to boycott the Assembly poll if their demands were not accepted by the state government and the district administration. According to a report, a village pond is stated to be the main cause of the dispute. The residents alleged their representations in this regard have proved futile.

Ticketless travellers: The Haryana Roadways has taken a series of steps to keep a check on the ticketless travellers commuting in the buses and revenue losses incurred by the depot in a bid to increase its income. The General Manager of the local depot Mr H C Jain said here on Thursday that these steps had yielded good results during the last one month as the revenue losses had gone down from Rs 60.77 lakh to Rs 19.73 lakh.

YAMUNANAGAR
Workshop: A one-day zonal level workshop for lecturers incharge of the Women Studies and Development Cell functioning at the government and non-government colleges organised under the scheme "Education for Women's Equality" was conducted at the local DAV College for Girls, on Wednesday. Principals and coordinators from 30 colleges attended the programme. The workshop was conducted by Mrs Shakuntla Jakhu, Director High Education.

DHARAMSALA
Suicide: The body of a youth was found hanging in the crematorium of McLeodganj here on Wednesday. According to the police, some persons had spotted the body hanging from an iron bar. The body had been sent for the post-mortem examination.

SUNDERNAGAR
Release amount: Residents of the eight panchayats of this sub-division has urged the PWD Minister, Mr Mohinder Singh, to immediately release the amount sanctioned by him to these panchayats so that it could be used in developmental activities. Nearly one-and-a-half year ago the minister had visited ‘Saiul Khud’, and while addressing the gathering he had sanctioned Rs 1 lakh each for Batwara, Dhawal, Kangoo, Slapper , Slapper Colony, Jarol, Chanol and Balag panchayats.
