Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Dec 7 —For the first time in the city, a majority of women's organisations have decided to form a common front called the Joint Women Front. A core committee will meet every month to set an agenda for local problems needing attention.

Dr Pam Rajput of the Centre for Women Studies at Panjab University, has been named the Convener of the front. Today, she talked about the forthcoming plan of action and the features of the new front.

Dr Rajput said representatives of leading women's groups of Maharashtra, Delhi and Punjab met the Prime Minister a few days ago to discuss the 84th Amendment, ensuring 33 per cent reservation for women in state legislatures.

"It was becoming evident to all political parties that women were gaining political influence. The shift is more obvious at the village level with the emerging leaderships in panchayats," a press note said.

The Peace for Empowerment and Call for Equity will make human chains all over the country on December 19 at 12 noon. Women, children and even men from all over the country would participate in the event.
