BARNALA
Seminar:
Sant Baba Attar Singh Khalsa college, Sandaur, 35 km from here organised a University Grants Commission (UGC) sponsored national seminar on "Disarmament and Mankind" in the college auditorium, here on Saturday. Dr Ravinder Kumar, Joint Secretary, UGC, northern Regional Office in Ghaziabad inaugurated the seminar. Dr B.S. Bhatia, Dean College Development Council, Punjabi University, Patiala was the chief guest.

FEROZEPORE
Camp:
The local Lions Club will organise a free eye operation camp at Frances Newton Hospital from December 7 to 12. According to the club president, Mr Iqbal Singh Chhabra, the patients will be provided free lodging facility. Medicines and spectacles will also be distributed amongst the patients free of cost.

Acupuncture therapy: Member of the local Citizens' Forum were apprised of acupuncture therapy by Dr Ravinder Marwaha here on Sunday according to the forum general secretary, Mr V.P Dhawan.

Excise Act: The district excise staff had seized 2,440 kg of lahan, 94 bottles of illicit liquor and 35 bottles of country liquor in November, according to Dr Mahavir Singh, Deputy Commissioner. At least 18 cases under the Excise Act were registered and 19 persons were arrested in this connection, he added.

KAPURTHALA
Killed:
Antar Preetpaul Singh (11), a class five student of Christ King Convent School was run over and killed by a tractor trolley here on Saturday.

Function: Jagdish Singh Memorial annual prizes distribution function will be organised at the local Randhir Government Senior Secondary School on Monday. Dr Amarjit Singh, will be the chief guest while Mr V.K. Singh, Deputy Commissioner, will preside over the function.

Arrest stayed: Mr Nirmal Singh, Sessions Judge, stayed the arrest of Mr Manjit Singh, a naib-tehsildar of Bholath subdivision here on Saturday. A kanungo and a patwari who were arrested on the charge of accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000 from a resident of Begowal were later released on bail by the judge.

MOGA
Donation:
The management of the local Sacred Heart School has donated Rs 51,000 to Kamajit Kaur, widow of Lance Naik Avtar Singh of Bareqal village who lost his life during the Kargil conflict.

IMFL seized: The Nihal Singhwala police in this district has seized at least 108 bottles of the IMFL liquor from a jeep coming from Bhagtabhai village under the Baghapurana police station. The smugglers were identified as Nanakchand and Kulbhushan Kumar both residents of Moga.

NAWANSHAHR
Memorandum:
Mr Narinder Singh Rathour, President, Doaba Social Welfare Society in a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, highlighted inconvenience being faced by the girl students who daily commute in a bus from Nawanshahr to Rahon. The problem has also been brought into the notice of the General Manager of the Punjab Roadways Depot, but no action has been taken so far.

By-election: A meeting of the district unit of the General Category Welfare Federation, Punjab, was held here at JSFH Khalsa High School under the presidentship of Dr H.S Gupta on Saturday. The federation has decided to field its candidate in the ensuing by-election for the local Assembly seat.

PHAGWARA
Training course:
Medical practitioners from various parts of Punjab staged a rally here on Saturday. They were demanding proper training course for health volunteers and recognition to the registered hakims from other states. A press note issued here on Saturday by the Medical Practitioners Association flayed the dilly-dallying attitude of the Punjab Government over the issue. A memorandum was also presented to the Local SDM.

AMBALA
Foundation stone:
The special Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister of Haryana Mrs S.C. Chaudhry laid the foundation stone of the community centre at Sector-1 in Ambala city here on Saturday. The administrator of HUDA at Panchkula, Mr Abhilaksh Likhi and Mr Ramniwas, DC, were also present on the occasion.

Elected: A BJP supported candidate, Mr Shashi Sharma, was declared elected as the member of the Sadar panchayat samiti from Dharote ward. He defeated his nearest rival Mr Dilbag Singh of the CPI, in a by-election held here on Friday, by 229 votes.

JIND
Blood bank:
The local branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) at a meeting held here on Saturday expressed concern at the steep increase in the price of the blood purchased from the blood banks. According to Dr Parveen Gupta, president of the IMA, the charges had been increased from Rs 250 to Rs 500 per bottle. he said the increase was unjustified and was causing great hardship to the patients. The IMA has submitted a memorandum to the Civil Surgeon in this regard and urged the Health Minister to look into the matter.

PANIPAT
Blood donation camp:
As many as 131 units of blood were donated by the students and teachers of the local S.D. College and members of the Bharat Vikas Parishad at a blood donation camp organised jointly by the district Red Cross Society and the Bharat Vikas Parishad here on Friday. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Sandeep Garg, inaugurated the camp.

SONEPAT
Resentment:
Resentment prevails among the farmers of several villages falling under the jurisdiction of the Rai Water Service Division over the scarcity of canal water for irrigation purpose. Farmers alleged that the canal water had failed to irrigate the tail-end of their field.

Rally: Students of Government Senior Secondary School, Model Town, and members of a local club organised a rally here on Saturday in aid of the Orissa cyclone victim. They also collected funds and other relief material for the cyclone victims.

Demonstration: Safai workers held a demonstration in front of the municipal council's office here on Saturday against the non-payment of their salaries for October and November. They threatened to stop the work if their salaries were not paid immediately.

Annual mahotsava: The management of Shri Deen Dayal Hanuman Mandir will organise its second annual mahotsava at Kot Mohalla of this city on December 8 and 9. The Sundarkaand mahayajna will be the main attraction of the utsava. Mr Dev Raj Diwan, MLA, will be the chief guest on this occasion.

Inquiry urged: Representatives of various farmer organisations here on Sunday demanded an inquiry into the alleged misdeeds of a SDO (mechanical) posted in the Irrigation Department. The SDO was allegedly misappropriating the funds, they alleged.top

BILASPUR
Primary school:
The Health and Family Welfare Minister, Mr Jagat Parakash Nadda said here on Saturday that an expenditure of Rs 126 crore would be incurred on 'Sarswati Bal Vidya Sankalp Yojna'. Primary schools would also be provided with three classrooms and a total of 13,612 class rooms would be constructed under the scheme. He inaugurated a primary school at Kothi Bharedi, 40 km from here.

Budget allocation: The HP Government has allocated 15.47 per cent of its total budgetary expenditure for education and 371.51 crore will be spent on it during this year. Presiding over an annual prize distribution function of Government Senior Secondary School, Bharadi, 65 km from here on Saturday the Education Minister Mr Ishwardass Dhiman declared that government had for the first time introduced "Yaswant Gurukul Awas Yojna" for school teacher in tribal and snow-bound areas apart from helping meritorious SC and ST students.

Meeting: The Youth Congress members at a meeting organised at Ghumarwin and Jhandutta on Saturday resolved to strengthen the youth Congress and spread its base in villages. The senior General Secretary of the District Youth Congress, Mr Hira Pal Singh, said here on Sunday that it was decided to depute as many as 15 youths at every polling booth and give training to youth Congress activists at the block level.

Fire brigade: The Himachal Pradesh Fire Brigade Union has urged the state government to take steps to control fires particularly during Diwali and ensure that crackers were not allowed to be stored and sold in the bazar. The Union leader, Mr Bhupinder Pal Dogra urged the Chief Minister to hold seminars to make public aware of the issue and accept demands of the fire brigade employees.

NAHAN
Firewood:
A team of forest officials led by Range officer Majra apprehended a tractor trolley on Saturday evening near Messerwala, 30 km from here, while illegally transporting 20 quintals Sal wood. According to Mr A.R.M. Reddy, DFO Paonta, these trees were cut from the adjoining government owned forest. The three accused were released after imposing a penalty of Rs 15700 on them.
