Lok Adalat: The District Legal Services
Authority here on Saturday held Lok Adalats at
the Sessions Courts and District Courts complexes
under the chairmanship of Mr V.B. Handa, District
and Sessions Judge. As many as 159 cases were
taken up, of which 83 cases were disposed of.GURDASPUR
Rift resolved: The rift between an Akali
leader and the police on one side and the
villagers of Chounta has been resolved, according
to Mr S.K. Sandhu, Deputy Commissioner. Mr Sandhu
said the case registered against 12 persons of
the village for assaulting a police party would
be withdrawn shortly.
Closure
order: Mr S.K. Sandhu, District Magistrate,
by an order issued here on Saturday ordered the
closing of liquor shops from September 3 to 6 and
October 5 to 7 in view of the Lok Sabha poll.
Telephone
lines: Telephones in Laxmi Bazaar are said to
be out of order for the past 15 days. The
Vice-President of the Taxation Bar, Mr K.K. Bomb,
said here that the lines had not been restored
despite complaints to the authorities concerned.

Legal cell: The following have been nominated
office-bearers of the legal cell of the District
Youth Congress here: Organising Secretary

Passing out
parade: Mr Suresh Arora, Deputy
Inspector-General of Police, Jalandhar Range,
took salute from 166 trainees of capsule course
no. 8 who participated in the passing out parade
at Police Recruits Training Centre, Jahan Khelan,
8 km from here, on Saturday. He also gave away
the prizes to the trainees who achieved
distinction in various fields.
KAPURTHALA
Bribery case: The Vigilance Bureau arrested
here on Saturday Sham Daas, a Sub-Inspector of
Punjab Police, and Sukhdev Singh, a Constable,
both of the CIA, on the charge of accepting bribe
from Krishna, wife of Baldev Singh of Todarwal
village, Hoshiarpur district. According to the
police, the accused demanded bribe for initiating
action against four persons who had harassed her.
LUDHIANA
Eye donation camp: The eye bank, Mansuran,
will organise a state-level eye donation
awareness camp at various schools and colleges to
celebrate the eye donation fortnight from August
25 to September 8. Essay competitions, writing,
poster making and slogan writing on the theme of
eye donation will also be organised.
MOGA
Stamp papers: Resentment prevails among
litigants of the district over the
non-availability of stamp papers of small
denominations. They stated here on Saturday that
due to this they were being forced to buy stamp
papers of higher denomination.
Milk prices: The
rate of milk has been increased from Rs 6.50 to
Rs 7.50 per litre throughout the district with
immediate effect, according to a report. The hike
is because of an acute shortage of milk during
the summers.
Roads'
construction: The Punjab Chief Minister, Mr
Parkash Singh Badal, directed the PWD Department
to make immediate and proper arrangements for the
construction of roads linking Kaleke village with
Baghapurana town and Bhekha village with Langeana
village. He stated this while addressing a
meeting at Baghapurana town during his election
campaign on Saturday.
PHAGWARA
Senior citizens: The Senior Citizens Council,
Punjab, has decided to vote and support only that
political party which gave primacy to the welfare
and upliftment of the aged, according to Dr
Desraj Sharma, council chief, here on Sunday. He
stated that an eight-point poll agenda had been
sent to all major political parties.
