AMRITSAR
Lok Adalat:
The District Legal Services Authority here on Saturday held Lok Adalats at the Sessions Courts and District Courts complexes under the chairmanship of Mr V.B. Handa, District and Sessions Judge. As many as 159 cases were taken up, of which 83 cases were disposed of.

GURDASPUR
Rift resolved
: The rift between an Akali leader and the police on one side and the villagers of Chounta has been resolved, according to Mr S.K. Sandhu, Deputy Commissioner. Mr Sandhu said the case registered against 12 persons of the village for assaulting a police party would be withdrawn shortly.

Closure order: Mr S.K. Sandhu, District Magistrate, by an order issued here on Saturday ordered the closing of liquor shops from September 3 to 6 and October 5 to 7 in view of the Lok Sabha poll.

Telephone lines: Telephones in Laxmi Bazaar are said to be out of order for the past 15 days. The Vice-President of the Taxation Bar, Mr K.K. Bomb, said here that the lines had not been restored despite complaints to the authorities concerned.

HOSHIARPUR
Legal cell:
The following have been nominated office-bearers of the legal cell of the District Youth Congress here: Organising Secretary — Mr Naveen Jairath; Joint Secretaries — Mr Vaneesh Rai and Mr Ajay Walia; and Treasurer — Mr Suresh Walia.

Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Doaba Sabhyachark Manch, Hariana: President — Mr Joginder Singh; Vice-President — Mr Manjit Singh Lehal; General Secretary — Mr Sukhu Mangal Isher; Secretary — Mr Amandeep Sharma; and Joint Secretary — Mr Varinder Nimana.

Passing out parade: Mr Suresh Arora, Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Jalandhar Range, took salute from 166 trainees of capsule course no. 8 who participated in the passing out parade at Police Recruits Training Centre, Jahan Khelan, 8 km from here, on Saturday. He also gave away the prizes to the trainees who achieved distinction in various fields.

KAPURTHALA
Bribery case:
The Vigilance Bureau arrested here on Saturday Sham Daas, a Sub-Inspector of Punjab Police, and Sukhdev Singh, a Constable, both of the CIA, on the charge of accepting bribe from Krishna, wife of Baldev Singh of Todarwal village, Hoshiarpur district. According to the police, the accused demanded bribe for initiating action against four persons who had harassed her.

LUDHIANA
Eye donation camp:
The eye bank, Mansuran, will organise a state-level eye donation awareness camp at various schools and colleges to celebrate the eye donation fortnight from August 25 to September 8. Essay competitions, writing, poster making and slogan writing on the theme of eye donation will also be organised.

MOGA
Stamp papers:
Resentment prevails among litigants of the district over the non-availability of stamp papers of small denominations. They stated here on Saturday that due to this they were being forced to buy stamp papers of higher denomination.

Milk prices: The rate of milk has been increased from Rs 6.50 to Rs 7.50 per litre throughout the district with immediate effect, according to a report. The hike is because of an acute shortage of milk during the summers.

Roads' construction: The Punjab Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, directed the PWD Department to make immediate and proper arrangements for the construction of roads linking Kaleke village with Baghapurana town and Bhekha village with Langeana village. He stated this while addressing a meeting at Baghapurana town during his election campaign on Saturday.

PHAGWARA
Senior citizens:
The Senior Citizens Council, Punjab, has decided to vote and support only that political party which gave primacy to the welfare and upliftment of the aged, according to Dr Desraj Sharma, council chief, here on Sunday. He stated that an eight-point poll agenda had been sent to all major political parties.

Died: Mr Parkash Chander Gorkha, a freedom fighter belonging to Fazilka, died of a heart attack here on Sunday. He was 82. He is survived by his wife, two sons and five daughters.

AMBALA
Seminar:
The Ambala chartered accountants, Chapter of Northern India, and the regional council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India on Saturday organised a seminar on new revised tax audit report under the CPE programme.

Poll security: Ambala police has beefed up security in the district for the Lok Sabha poll on September 5. The police has directed all private firearm holders to deposit their arms at their nearest police station immediately.

SIRSA
Mockery of programme:
A cultural programme, "Ek Sham Shahedon ke Naam," organised by the Sachdeva group of publications as a tribute to the martyrs turned out to be a sheer mockery, convening no message to the audience .

SONEPAT
Office-bearers:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the Lions Club here: President — Mr Shiv Dutt Sharma; Secretary — Mr N.K .Bajaj; and Treasurer — Mr Shakti Sharma.

Ration cards: Resentment prevails among residents of the city against the non-issuing of new ration cards and overcharging by the photographers. Many residents alleged that the officials of the department concerned had failed to take any action in this regard.

Boy found: A seven-year-old boy Maninder, was reunited with his family here on Saturday after three-and-a-half years with the help of a doctor. The boy had left his house on June 29, 1996, for playing but failed to turn up. Mohinder Singh, the father, searched for him, but in vain. A doctor of the area had gone to a home for destitute children at Rewari on August 15 to distribute fruits where he found the boy.

Strike: Students of CRA College observed a strike for the second day on Saturday in protest against the alleged dismissal of two teachers and the suspension of another teacher by the management. The students stated that if their demands were not accepted by the management, their strike would continue indefinitely.top

HAMIRPUR
First position:
The district has secured first position in the implementation of the 20-point economic programme in the state during 1998-99. This was stated by Mr Kamlesh Kumar Pant, Deputy Commissioner, here on Saturday.

NAHAN
Dharna threat:
The House Tax Agitation Committee here has decided to stage a dharna in front of the municipal council's office on August 30 to protest against the imposition of the house tax. The committee has demanded its immediate withdrawal.

SHIMLA
Suspension sought:
The Himachal Pradesh Accounts Association has demanded the immediate suspension of the woman constable who slapped an employee of the Accountant-General's office and tried to forcibly take him away in a gypsy. It will decide its further course of action on Monday after ascertaining the response of authorities concerned.

AWWA week: Mrs Daulat Oberoi, President of the Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA), Army Training Command, has called for concerted and constant efforts for supporting the families of the jawans who made the supreme sacrifice while defending the country. She was inaugurating the "AWWA week" here on Saturday. She also released the AWWA journal.

SOLAN
Run over:
Hari Singh, a cyclist, died on the spot after he was run over by a tractor near Panjera village on Friday. The driver has been arrested and the tractor impounded.

JAWALAMUKHI
Sadhu dead:
A 50-year-old sadhu died on Sunday near the local Khutiala Dharamsala. He has not been identified so far.
