Honoured: The Vice-Chancellor of Guru
Nanak Dev University, Dr H.S. Soch, has honoured
Dr S S Bir, Professor Emeritus, Punjabi
University, Patiala, and Dr I S Grover, Professor
of Botanical Sciences Department, Guru Nanak Dev
University, for their commendable services
rendered in the field of plant and environment
sciences. These awards were presented at a
function organised here on Wednesday at Guru

Telephone exchange: The Hoshiarpur
Telecom District has planned to increase the
capacity of telephone exchanges from 62,684 lines
to more than 1 lakh lines. Seven new exchanges
are also likely to be opened during this
financial year. This was stated Mr Mohan Lal, ITS
General Manager, Hoshiarpur while speaking to
mediapersons after the inauguration of the 1000
line C-DoT exchange at Mehatpur Ollandini.
GARHSHANKAR
Rally: The Janwadi Istri Sabha and its
supporting unions organised a protest rally in
front of the office of SDO Public Health for not
doing anything to purify the contaminated water
being supplied to the people of Beet and Kandi
areas near here.
LUDHIANA
Income Tax Department: The Commissioner
of Income Tax, Mr K.K. Kapila, has said the
offices of the Income Tax Department at Ludhiana
, Moga, Malerkotla and Khanna will remain open
for the purpose of receipt of income tax returns
on Saturday and Sunday, i.e. August 28 and 29,
from 9 a.m. and 4.30 p.m.
Land
acquisition: The Ludhiana Electroplater
Association has decried the inordinate delay in
the acquisition of 175 acres lying vacant in
Phase IX of the focal point. The association said
Mr D.S. Guru, Director of Industries, Punjab, and
Mr G Vajralingam, MD, PSIEC, had visited the site
in 1998 and submitted the report, but the land
was not acquired. It urged the state government
to acquire the land.
Pensioners
plea: In a memorandum to the Prime
Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, the Government
Pensioners Association has requested him for the
early resolution of their grievances. A copy of
the memorandum was also released to the Press
here on Thursday.
PATIALA
Eye check-up camp: A free eye check-up
and operation camp will be held at Balbehra
village in the district on Sunday. It is being
organised by a gram udyog samiti. Food, medicines
and spectacles free of cost will be provided to
patients.
Sapling
plantation: The Rotary Club (Mid-Town)
here and the local branch of the State Bank of
India organised a week-long sapling plantation in
the city and its surroundings. It was inaugurated
by Mr H.S. Sidhu, SSP, Patiala.
Tour:
A group of 27 artists of the Punjab Nritya
Akademi will shortly leave for a fortnight's tour
of Malaysia and Singapore for giving cultural
programmes dedicated to the 300th birth
anniversary of the Khalsa. This was stated by Mr
S.K. Ahluwalia, IAS, at a function organised by
the National Theatre Arts Society, Patiala.
Ban
orders: Mr Jasbir Singh Bir, District
Magistrate, has banned the sale and consumption
of liquor from September 3 to 5 and from October
4 to 6 in view of the ensuing Lok Sabha
elections. The orders said any person or agency
found violating the order would be punished under
relevant laws.
PHAGWARA
Theft: A video camera was stolen from a
showroom of Mr Bimal Anand on the local Railway
road on Thursday. Five persons who came in a Tata
Sumo and pretending as customers, took advantage
of the rush and decamped with the camera.
