Cultural Scene
Pretty looking boys stage play
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Aug 27 — It was the oft-heard tale of a 'strict' school, a greedy and brutal headmaster and a poor little orphan boy that was staged this morning by St John's High School, Sector 26, at Tagore Theatre. The musical, titled 'Smike', based on Charles Dickens' popular novel 'Nicholas Nickleby', written by Roger Holman and Simon May, has been directed by Brother C. D'Abreu, Principal of the school.

With pretty looking and melodious sounding young boys on the stage telling the story of an orphaned boy named Smike being treated shabbily by the headmaster of Dotheboy's Hall and finally being rescued by Nicholas Nickleby, the schoolteacher, and the other school boys, the play somehow dragged a bit too much. Long gaps and unsynchronised choreography jarred the otherwise interesting play. The extravagant sets executed by Vinay Wadhera, Jack Imlay and Arun Nanda also failed to do little much for this three-hour long production.

But the choir, executed by Mrs Mercia Sharma, proved to be a melodious diversion.

The second half of the play was highly engrossing, with the tragi-comic scenes between the schoolteacher and the headmaster's daughter providing the humour to this otherwise sad tale.Back
