Campus beat
B.Sc.(Hons) students get special chance
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Aug 25 — Students of the B.Sc (Honours) stream at Panjab University who fared badly in the annual examination of first year have been given an additional chance for the current session. The admission, however, shall be provisional.

Earlier, students could carry on in the second year even if they fared badly in the first year. But during last session, the university made a rule that students must necessarily secure 24 credits in the first year. Even the amended rule asks students who have been allowed provisional chance to secure at least 24 credits, Dr V.K.Bansal, Dean Students Welfare, said here today.

Candidates who manage 24 credits in the examination scheduled later this year will be allowed to carry on with the second year course. Otherwise, they will cease to be on rolls of the second year session.

The decision affects about 25 students directly for the current session, Dr Bansal said.

The chance has come following a protest by students who said that since that this was the first year of the introduction of the new rule, they deserved a special chance. The matter will also figure in the Syndicate and Senate meetings for a final decision later.

Each student will have to secure at least 56 credits in the second year on the basis of the first and second year examinations. Students who fail to secure the necessary credits will not be promoted.

Dr Bansal said students shall not be entitled to any benefit of condonation of shortage of lectures in the second year on the plea that they are preparing for the first year. However, the days on which the students appear for examination of the first year will be counted in favour of students' presence in the class, Dr Bansal added.

Satire on politics: Senior pass-outs of the Department of Indian Theatre and local artistes presented a street play Keemti Vote at the Students Centre here today.

Daljeet Singh, a pass-out of the department who also collaborates for projects in Mumbai, in his direction exploited the medium of language in a manner which sustained interest.

A sizeable gathering surrounded the street stage to watch a colourful and musical satire on the corrupt political system.

Contrasting simple joys with the manipulative mannerisms of common-day life, the play expressed simple truths of life in a musical way. Back

Corporation Beat
Congress is main Opposition
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Aug 25 — With the reinduction of the eight rebel councillors into the BJP, the Congress will now be the main Opposition group in the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh.

Till now the BJP-SAD alliance, having seven councillors, was the main Opposition group in the civic body and a BJP councillor, Mr Des Raj Tandon, was the Leader of the Opposition. While the BJP had the support of five councillors, the Akalis had two councillors in the 29-member corporation.

With the change in the number game, the post of the Leader of the Opposition will now go to the Congress since it was the only Opposition group in the civic body. It may be recalled that the strength of the Congress had gone up to five with the addition of the Mrs Satinder Dhawan (SJP), who along with her husband and a former Union Minister, Mr Harmohan Dhawan, joined the Congress recently.

The Congress councillors are likely to meet in a day or two and present their claim for the post of the Leader of the Opposition before the meeting of the House on August 30.

The seating plan of the councillors is also likely to be changed. The seating plan was last changed earlier this year when the BJP-SAD alliance had demanded a separate seating arrangement as the main Opposition group following the defeat of its candidates for the posts of Mayor, the Senior Deputy Mayor and the Deputy Mayor on December 23 last year.

Subsequently, the ruling group had elected Mr Raghubir Lal Arora as the Leader of the House.Back
