IT was an evening with a difference for serious music lovers: the young and old on Sunday assembled at Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, Panchkula, to pay homage to saint singer Pandit Vishnu Digamber Paluskar. Pt Paluskar founded the first gandharva Mahavidyalaya at Lahore in 1901 to popularise Indian classical music and help regain its lost glory and respect. Mrs Suraksha Dutta, wife of the founder of the local branch of mahavidyalaya, recounted the concerted efforts of Pt Paluskar and his contemporaries in popularising the classical arts among educated classes who had started associating it with courtesans and darbar. She said it is time that we paid homage to the services of the saint singer by preserving our great cultural heritage. The evening began with the presentation of the traditional aarti sung by the Gandharva chair group as composed by Pt Paluskar in raga Bihari. This was followed by solo renderings by Sumedha, Meenu Kapoor, Gopal Tanwer and Manav Jaini. The Children's Gandharva Chair comprising about 30 children presented Racha prabhu tune yeh brahmand sara in perfect harmony. Though disrupted by the rain, the programme was resumed indoors after a short power cut. The highest point of the evening was rendering of vedic shlokas and dhamar by the Gandharva chair. The evening came to a melodious close when Arvind Sharma, Head of the Department of Music, Panjab University, presented a composition of Pt Onkar Nath Thakur Paar laga de mori naiya in raga des followed by community singing of Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram. |
