Invitation:
The Indian Cultural Society, Berlin, has invited Dr Kulbir Singh Kang, an eminent Punjabi critic and writer, to deliver a lecture on "Heritage of Art in Punjab" on August 20.

GURDASPUR
Willow wood seized:
The police has arrested Parvez Ahmad of Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir and recovered 4,800 willow wood bats, according to Mr Varinder Kumar, SSP. He said the accused used to smuggle wood into Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. A case under Sections 379 and 411, IPC, has been registered against him.

HOSHIARPUR
Protest:
Employees of the District Food and Supply Department held a rally in front of the office here on Friday in protest against the non-implementation of the promotion policy and sanction of 286 posts. They threatened to launch agitation in case their demands were not accepted.

JALANDHAR
One held:
The police arrested Prem Nath, alias Kuku, on a charge of cement adulteration here on Friday, according to Mr Gaurav Yadav, SSP. He was arrested from Basti Seikh. The police has recovered 72 bags of mixed cement.

KAPURTHALA
Martyrdom day:
The 12th martyrdom day of Jatinder Dutt Passi, a BJP leader who was gunned down by militants on August 16, 1987, will be observed at Sheikhupur village, near here, on August 16.

NAWANSHAHR
Poll arrangements:
The district administration has completed all arrangements in the three Assembly segments, Nawanshahr Banga and Balachaur, besides, a portion of the Phillaur Assembly segment, according to Dr Roshan Sunkaria, Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Electoral Officer, on Friday.

SANGRUR
Three held:
The police has arrested Joginder Singh, Harjit Singh and Avtar Singh, all residents of Malerkotla, on a charge of cheating people by operating illegal lottery draws, according to Mr Arpit Shukla, SSP.

KAITHAL
Ban:
The District Magistrate, Ms Jaiwanti Sheokand, has imposed a ban on carrying of arms and other weapons in the district under Section 144 of the CrPC. The ban will remain in force till October 6. The District Magistrate also directed the arms licence holders to deposit their weapons with the authorised arms dealer or the police.

Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Chemist Association: president — Mr Gopal Sikri; vice-president — Mr Biruram; secretary — Mr Pardeep Sharma; joint secretary — Mr Akshay Kumar and cashier — Mr Parshottam Goel.

REWARI
Appointed:
Mr Raojagmal Singh, Mr Shrichand Yadav and Mr Ramchander Yadav have been appointed presidents of the district unit of the BSP from Rewari, Mahendergarh and Gurgaon, respectively.

Financial observer: Mr V.K. Garg, Joint Director, Directorate of Revenue and Intelligence, Mumbai, has been appointed the Financial Observer for the Mahendergarh parliamentary constituency by the Election Commission. He will visit here on August 16.

SIRSA
Five injured:
Five members of family were injured when a wall of the house caved in at Mandi Dabwali on Friday. The injured are Savitri Devi, Santosh Rani, Parkash Chand, Barkharam and Manoj and have been admitted to the local Civil Hospital.

One held: The police arrested Sukhvinder, alias Pappu, a proclaimed offender and resident of Kilianwali village of Punjab, on Friday, according to Mr B.S Sandhu, SSP. He was arrested on a charge of stealing a tractor-trailer from Mandi Dabwali on February 6,1991. The another accomplice, Atama Singh, is still absconding.

SONEPAT
Liquor seized:
CIA staff along with officials of the Excise Department arrested Ashok and Jaghir of Gorar village in this district on Friday and seized 492 boxes of country-made liquor, according to Mr K. Selvraj, SSP. A case under the Excise Act has been registered against them.

Killed: Rajbir, a police constable, was killed on the spot when his scooter collided with a vehicle on the G.T road, near Hassanpur Kurar village, 10 km from here, on Friday. The police has registered a case.

Gang busted: The police claims to have busted a gang of auto lifters with the arrest of Surinder Kumar of Arya Nagar and Ajay Kumar of the West Ram Nagar area, according to Mr K.Selvraj, SSP, here on Saturday. He said the police recovered two motor cycles from their possession.

Competition: The District Children Welfare Council has decided to organise an on-the spot painting competition at Bal Bhavan here on August 17. According to an official press note, children and handicapped children between the age group of 5 and 8 will take part in the competition.top

PALAMPUR
One killed:
Pritam Chand, a contractor in the HP Public Works Department, was killed and two injured when a truck hit their scooter near Paror on Thursday. One of the injured has been referred to PGI, Chandigarh. The police has registered a case.
