GURDASPUR
Two held:
The Pathankot police has busted an inter-state gang of thieves. According to Mr Varinder Kumar, SSP, on Thursday, the arrested identified as Tarsem, a resident of Pathankot, and Surindere Soni, a resident of Talwara Jattan village. The police recovered electronic goods worth Rs 65,000, three motorcycles and four scooters from their possession. A case under Sections 379 and 411, IPC, has been registered against them.

KAPURTHALA
Theft:
Burglars entered the house of Mr Raghbir Paul Singh Bajwa, a resident of Ranjit Avenue, and took away cash and ornaments. The police has registered a case.

LUDHIANA
Sapling planted:
A sapling plantation campaign was organised by State Bank of India, Civil Lines branch, here on Thursday. A poster making competition was also organised on the occasion.

Seminar: a new concept of societal engineering was floated in a seminar on 'Impact of Energy on Quality and Environment' held at Industrial Training Institute, Sector 28, on Thursday. A technical session was also organised, in which topics like energy conservation were discussed.

Complaint: In a complaint made to Excise and Taxation Commissioner on Friday, Dr H.M. Swami, Head of the Department of Community Medicine, Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, alleged that a housefly was found in a liquor bottle purchased from a vendor in Sector 26.

Camp: A free tuberculosis detection camp will be organised by the Life Line Care and Diagnostics at 707, Industrial Area, Phase II, on Sunday. Free x-ray examination of chest, blood investigations, sputum test and manteaux test will be conducted for all patients.

Party: An MTV VJ and actress, Mini Mathur, will perform at a rain dance party in Fun city Amusement Park on Saturday. The party is being organised to celebrate independence day and the monsoon.

Contest: Government High School, Sector 40, held an embroidery contest for junior and senior students on the school premises on Friday. About 100 girls participated.

Celebrations: Children from different city schools sang patriotic numbers during Independence Day celebrations, which began at the Sector 11 YWCA on Friday.

KALKA
Two killed: Gopal and Shyam Lal, both employees of the Tourism Department, Panchkula, were killed on the spot in a road mishap on the Kalka-Chandigarh highway, near HMT Pinjore, on Wednesday.

Power shortage: Erratic power supply in the town has made the life miserable for residents. The spokesman of the Senior Citizen Association, Mr Joginder Pal, a resident of the Kurari mohalla, complained that the voltage is so low that electrical appliances hardly work.

Rally: Students of Paragon Senior Secondary School will take out an Independence Day-cum-Kargil victory rally on Saturday. a draft for Rs 15,000, collected by the staff and students of the branches of the school in phase I and Sector 71, will also be presented to the SDM for the welfare of the families of kargil martyrs.

Donated: The staff of Punjab State University Textbook Board has donated one-day's salary, amounting to Rs 8,691, to the Punjab War Heroes Fund.top

AMBALA
Drug tablets seized:
Jail authorities of Ambala Central Jail have seized 2,000 narcotic drug tablets from Ved Parkash, a prisoner. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered against him.

HISAR
Training programme:
A month long training programme organised by the Academy of Agricultural Research and Education Management of CCS Haryana Agricultural University concluded on Friday. As many as 25 farm scientists, including teachers, from various universities participated. Dr R.D Sharma, Dean, College of Veterinary Sciences, gave away certificates to the participants.

KURUKSHETRA
Elected:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the governing body of Indira Gandhi National College, Ladwa: president — Mr Pawan Garg; vice-president — Mr Harjoginder Singh; general secretary — Mr Ved Parkash; and treasurer — Mr Dinesh Goel.

PANIPAT
Five held:
The district police has arrested five miscreants on Wednesday and recovered three country-made pistols, five cartridges and a knife from their possession. The arrested identified as Sajad Kumar, Kuldeep, Vijay Kumar, Gurmukh and Ved Parkash.

Protest: Residents of the local Kishanpura blocked traffic on the Panipat-Guhana road for more than two hours on Thursday demanding arrest of two brothers, Narender, alias Babbal, and Billa, both residents of the colony. The residents alleged that they threatened them under the influence of liquor on Wednesday. The blockade was lifted on an assurance of the DSP, Mr P.R. Verma.

SIRSA
Sentenced:
Mr Ishwar Dutt, Judicial Magistrate, Class I, on Thursday convicted Gian Chand and awarded one year imprisonment and a fine of Rs 500 in a criminal case registered against him under Sections 457, 380 and 411, IPC, on December, 21,1996.

Case registered: A case under Section 309, IPC, was registered against Sita Singh of Pipli village in this district at the Kalanwali police station on Thursday. A spokesman of the Sirsa police said here on Friday that arrested accused had made an attempt to commit suicide in police custody and also tried to abscond from the police station.

SONEPAT
Ban:
The District Magistrate, Mr Anil Kumar, on Friday prohibited the carrying of firearms, licensed or unlicensed, including sharp-edge weapons, within the jurisdiction of Sonepat district. According to official sources, the ban will remain in force till October 20.

Resentment: Resentment prevails among residents of Dev Nagar against the failure of the police to register a case against the assailants who attacked and injured four members of family. The injured held a dharna in front of the SSP office on Thursday.top

BILASPUR
Condemn:
A meeting of the HP State PWD Assistant Engineers Association was held here on Wednesday. The association condemned the state government for the failure to implement the recommendations of the Fifth Punjab Pay Commission. The recommendations include revision of pay scales after four, nine and 14 years of service.

SHIMLA
Revenue committee:
A committee constituted for suggesting amendments in revenue laws in Himachal Pradesh will submit its report by December 31. This was disclosed by Minister of State for Revenue Rajan Sushant at a meeting held here on Wednesday.
