AMRITSAR
Awareness camp:
A girl child awareness camp was organised by the Punjab Istri Sabha with the cooperation of the Central Social Welfare Board. Nearly 700 girls and women participated in the camp held under the presidium comprising Bibi Bir Kalsi, vice-president of the sabha, Bibi Bachni, and Ms Kewal Sharma. Prof Harish Kumar Puri, Chairman, Dr Ambedkar Chair, Guru Nanak Dev University, inaugurated the camp. Mrs Vimla Dang condemned atrocities on women.

BATALA
Aid for widows:
The subdivision has received Rs 43 lakh and 27 thousand for the aid of widows hit by terrorism. Mr A.K. Sinha, Subdivisional Magistrate, said here on Tuesday that Rs 2500 a month each would be given to the widows whose husband expired or were injured during the terrorist violence and during the 1984 Delhi riots. A sum of Rs 1000 each would be given to an orphan child.

FEROZEPORE
Promotions sought:
Members of the district unit of the Food and Supplies Department Ministerial Staff Union, Punjab, led by the union state unit president, Mr Rajesh Sachdeva, held a gate rally here on Tuesday. They said ministerial staff were being denied promotions.

JALANDHAR
Patwari arrested:
The vigilance bureau here has arrested Patwari Satnam Singh of Shahkot tehsil for allegedly accepting bribe. Mr R.P. S.Bajwa, SP of the bureau, said here on Tuesday that he was arrested for taking a bribe of Rs 2000 from Resham Singh of Pandhir village in Nakodar.
Election office:
The Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) inaugurated its election office here on Wednesday. Mr Kirpal Singh Wadungar, secretary of party, said the office would monitor campaign programmes for the area.
Appointed:
Mr Sarbjit Singh Wariana, President of the Sarb Hind Shiromani Akali Dal (rural) here appointed the following as office-bearers of the rural body of the dal on Tuesday: senior vice-president — Mr Balwant Singh Virdi, vice-presidents — Mr Paramjit Singh and Mr Satpal Singh and organisation secretary — Mr Tarlochan Singh.
NSUI chief:
Mr Sandeep Sharma has been appointed Acting President of the NSUI state unit with immediate effect by Mr Simerjit Singh Saini, President of the state unit, who will be visiting Canada and the USA.

LUDHIANA
Schoolboy killed:
A 12-year-old boy, Vinay Nayyar, was killed when the autorickshaw in which he was travelling collided with a car near Gill Chowk on Tuesday. A class VI student of BCM Senior Secondary School, he was going to the school along with 12 other children. Other children received minor injuries.
Demonstration held:
Members of the All-India Punjab National Bank Officers Association staged a demonstration in front of the bank zonal office on Wednesday. The demonstration led by Mr P.K. Nayyar, vice-president, of the association was against the 'unilateral' decision taken by the management for amending the promotion policy without taking into confidence their representatives.

NAWANSHAHR
Solar mandi:
The two-day solar mandi organised by the Punjab Energy Development Agency concluded here on Tuesday. The mandi, which was inaugurated by Mr Dalip Kumar, ADC (Development), exhibited items like solar cooker , solar lantern and home light system.
Vanamahotsava:
The Deputy Commissioner, Dr Roshan Sunkaria, inaugurated vanamahotsava programme in the district by planting a sapling at Dhussi Bundh along the Satlej river near Dhangerpur village, about 25 km from here on Tuesday. District officials, school children neo-literates and villagers also planted saplings along the 61-km-long bundh.

PATHANKOT
Ecological survey:
The local Institute of Ecology and Environment has conducted a survey on conserving biodiversity in Dhar division. A spokesman for the institute said that there were a number of medicinal plants in Punjab from which farmers could get benefit a lot. The project was sponsored by Darwin Institute, Britain.

CTU service: With the CTU authorities discontinuing bus service (route No. 30-D) to Kishangarh village, commuters are being put to a lot of inconvenience. According to residents, the bus service had been discontinued by the authorities without assigning any reason. In the absence of the bus service, residents had to walk about 2 km to Mani Majra, said Mr Santa Singh, a panch
Drive launched: The Welfare Committee of Sector 27-D has launched a tree plantation drive and a campaign for the removal of congress grass, besides installation of swings in the sub-sector. The committee will also install tree guards. Two swings have already been installed in the park.
Bus service: Students of Shaheed Udham Singh College of Engineering and Technology, near SAS Nagar, have demanded a direct bus service to the college. The students also demanded that the CTU bus route number 95, plying on the Kharar-Rajpura route, should be diverted to SAS Nagar and Chandigarh. In the absence of a bus shelter students have to stand in the open, exposed to sun and rain.
Creative learning: St Kabir Public School has in collaboration with Margas' Global Kids added creative learning to the school curriculum. A creative learning club was introduced in the school today. The school Principal, Mr J.P Singh, says that the object is to instil in children a greater sense of confidence, leading to higher levels of achievement.

PANCHKULA
Kargil fund:
The Panchkula Residents Welfare Federation has contributed Rs 1,08,505 for the welfare of families of Kargil heroes. The sum has been collected from members of the federation and some well-wishers.
Housing society: The elected office-bearers of the Hisab Co-operative Group Housing Society, Sector 28, here are: Mr NK Malik — Patron, Mr Keshav Kapoor — President, Mr RK Shelly — General Secretary, Mr Avinash Kumar — Cashier, Mr Sushil Grover — Vice-President, and Mr Mahesh Pathania — Organising Secretary.
Function: A three-day Manav Ekta Samelan will be held from August 19 to August 22 at the Manav Kendra, Panchkula, to commemorate the 25 anniversary of Param Sant Kirpal Singh Ji Maharaj, according to Mr Gurdev Singh, Member of the Chandigarh Ruhani Satsang.
HUDA association: The following have been elected the office-bearers of the HUDA Labour Colony Welfare Association, Phase II, Industrial Area: Chairman — Mr M.S. SAS NAGAR
Akhand path:
The Mahila Mandal of Madanpur village organised an “akhand path” in the memory of Kargil martyrs at the village Gurdwara here on Wednesday. The Mahila Mandal later handed over Rs 2100 to the SDM, Mr O.P. Popli, for the families of martyrs.

Drugs seized:
The jail authorities of Ambala Central Jail have seized 600 narcotic drug tablets from two prisoners in the jail. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered against them.

JIND
Three killed:
Three persons were killed on the spot and five others were injured when their three-wheeler was hit by a truck on the Narwana-Kaithal road near Dhakal village, 50 km from here, on Monday. The deceased have been identified Shamsher, the driver of the three-wheeler, Amit and Suresh Mittal. The injured — Veena, Santosh, Ravi, Pushpa and Pawan Mittal — belong to Narwana and are members of the same family.
Electrocuted:
Partap Singh was electrocuted when he touched an electricity pole near the local market committee office here on Monday.

KAITHAL
Poll arrangement:
The election arrangements for the forthcoming Lok Sabha poll were reviewed at a meeting presided over by the Deputy Commissioner, Ms Jaiwanti Sheokand, here on Tuesday. She said Assistant Returning officers for all five assembly segments falling in the Kurukshetra Lok Sabha constituency have been appointed.
Installed:
The following were installed office-bearers of the local Lions Club (Central): president — Mr Ranvir Prashar; vice-presidents — Mr Ramesh Aggarwal, Mr Rajender Khurana, Mr Ved Parkash Munjhal and Mr Vijay Mehra; secretary — Mr Krishan Miglani; and treasurer — Mr Hemant Manchanda.

BILASPUR
Probe sought:
Led by retired Sub Bhagatram Sharma, village leaders of Kandraur and Dhar areas, near here, have urged the government to order an inquiry into the alleged irregularities in the construction of a link road from Kandraur to Dhar village. They urged the Chief Minister to ensure that the money given to the panchayat for construction was not misused.

CHAMBA
Bangladeshi held:
The police has arrested a resident of Bangladesh at Chaned village in the district. Mr R.M. Sharma, Superintendent of Police, here on Tuesday said that he was identified as Sadiq Rehman and sent to judicial custody. A case under Section 41(2) (109) of the Cr PC has been registered.

JAWALAMUKHI
Grievances redressed:
Fiftyseven out of 123 cases were solved on the spot at a grievances redressal camp held at Barnali village in Dehra subdivision of Kangra district on Tuesday. The SDM, Dehra, Mr S.S. Chambiyal, presided over the function.

SOLAN
Saplings planted:
Students and staff of the Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry at Nauni, near here, celebrated the vanamahotsava by planting 400 saplings at the institute main campus on Wednesday. The Vice-Chancellor, Dr R.P. Awasthi, who inaugurated the campaign regretted that only 22 per cent of area in the state was under forest cover at present.
