12 die in Burundi fighting
KANYOSHA, Burundi, Aug 11 (Reuters) — Heavy fighting between Burundi's army and rebels raged for a second day in the hills outside the capital today with at least 11 rebels and one soldier reported dead the previous day. Clashes began after a rebal attack last morning on the market at Kanyosha, a slum area around 7 km south of central Bujumbura. The attack sent thousands of civilians fleeing towards the capital.

3 Army men killed
GUWAHATI, Aug 11 (PTI) — Three Army personnel were killed and nine others, including two civilians, were seriously injured when militants of the banned National Democratic Front of Bodoland exploded a powerful improvised explosive device in Assam’s Sonitpur district this evening.

Gawli arrested
PUNE, Aug 11 (PTI) — The police today arrested underworld don Arun Gawli along with 170 persons at Wadgaonpeer in Ambegaon taluka of the district on charges of rioting and committing other offences against a police party. The rural police Sub-Inspector Deepak Arwe said here a 15-member police team, which had gone to conduct a search last night at the place where Gawli was staying, was attacked by his henchmen in which three cops were injured.

Award for Sonia
NEW DELHI, Aug 11 (UNI) — Mrs Sonia Gandhi was today presented with the prestigious Thorr award in recognition of her contribution to the advancement of human civilisation, liberty, democracy, peace and human rights. The award was presented to her by Mr Carlos Crocca on behalf of the MDM Geneve, which has instituted it.

Bihar flood toll 212
PATNA, Aug 11 (UNI) — With the Ganga showing a rising trend along its course in Bihar, fresh areas were threatened with floods even as the toll rose to 212. Central Water Commission sources said that the Ganga overtopped the danger mark at Farakka by 20 cm. It was likely to increase by 8 cm by tomorrow morning.

N Korea missile
SEOUL, , Aug 11 (AFP) — Communist North Korea has completed preparations for the launch of a long-range Taepodong ii missile and is expected to test-fire it within a month, South Korea’s intelligence chief said today. He said the missile had a range of between 4,500 and 6,700 kms. The upper range would allow it to hit parts of the USA.

SP-NCP alliance
SURAT, Aug 11 (UNI) — State unit President of Samajwadi Party (SP) Balubhai Nakum said here today that the party had made electoral alliance with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in the state for the Lok Sabha election. Mr Nakum said as per the agreement the Samajwadi Party would not field its candidate against the NCP in seven constituencies — Vadodara, Chhota Udepur, Mandivi, Valsad, Dahod, Bharuch and Kutch.

Wadhwa report
CALCUTTA, Aug 11 (PTI) — The Bangiya Christiya Pariseba (BCP), a united forum of Catholics and Protestants, today rejected the Wadhwa commission report on the killing of Australian missionary Graham Staines and his two sons, and demanded a CBI enquiry into the incident. "The report is biased," BCP general secretary said.

Narmada in spate
GANDHINAGAR, Aug 11 (PTI) — Over 500 persons were evacuated from low lying areas of Broach town and villages on the banks of Narmada in Gujarat today as the river was in spate due to heavy rains in its catchment areas in the past few days. The river was flowing at 9 metres, 1.68 metres above the danger level, at the Golden Bridge near the town at 8 p.m., Central Water Commission officials said in Surat. The district administrations of Broach and Baroda were put on full alert to meet any eventuality arising out of floods.
