GURDASPUR
One killed:
One person was killed and 14 were injured when a bus carrying marriage party from Pathankot to Qadian turned turtle near UBDC crossing on Saturday. The injured have been admitted to the local Civil Hospital. The dead was identified as Vinod Sharma of Pathankot.

Punsup employee held: The police arrested Gurnam Singh, Inspector, Punsup, on Saturday and recovered 140 quintals of stolen wheat from his possession, according to Mr Varinder Kumar, SSP. A case under Sections 379, 411, 409 and 420 , IPC, has been registered against him.

HOSHIARPUR
No arms licence:
Mr Iqbal Singh Sidhu, District Magistrate, has stopped issuing arms licences in the district keeping in view the coming Lok Sabha elections. According to a press release issued here on Saturday, the ban will remain imposed till October 22.

JALANDHAR
ISO certification:
Mehr Chand Polytechnic here has been selected for "ISO 9000 certification" by the Department of Electronics, Government of India, at a function held at Hyderabad. The DOE introduced the project IMPACT in association with the World Bank and the Swiss Development Cooperation, Switzerland, in 1991. The DOE selected 14 engineering colleges and 12 polytechnics, including Mehr Chand Polytechnic, from all over the country under the project, according to Mr R.K.Dhawan, Principal of the college.

Child care week: The Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India, Jalandhar chapter, organised a week-long "breast feeding promotion campaign", which concluded on Saturday. Dr Kamal Gupta, President, FOGSI, said during the drive patients were educated about the benefits of breast feeding.

Appointed: Jathedar Balwinder Singh Teer has been appointed organising secretary of the Sarab Hind Shiromani Akali Dal led by Mr Gurcharan Singh Tohra, President of the dal.

Demonstration: Officers of Punjab National Bank, Jalandhar zone, held a demonstration here on Saturday. Mr K.R.Jain, Zonal Secretary of the All-India PNB Officers Association, said they were protesting against the new promotion policy. He said the executive members of the association will hold demonstration in Ludhiana on August 9.

MOGA
One killed:
A head constable was killed on the spot in a head-on collision between a bus and a scooter near Nanaksar village on Saturday. The police has registered a case and impounded the bus.

Advisory committee: Mr Karam Jit Singh Malhotra and Mr Tirlokinath Grover, both local residents, were nominated members of the Telephone Advisory Committee by the Telecommunication Department on Saturday.

SAMRALA
Two held:
The local police arrested Muhomad Inamul and Dinesh Kumar from a tubewell on the Khanna road on Saturday and recovered stolen goods from their possession, according to Mr Ashish Kapoor, SHO, Samrala.

Student woes: Sarbjit Kaur, a student of XII and resident of Khattran village , said she received a marksheet from the Punjab School Education Board under roll no. 223726 in which she got 220 marks ( pass candidate ) and now she had received a letter from the board in which she was declared failed in English.

Medical camp: The units I and XII of the Sri Sathya Seva Organisation conducted a medical camp for villagers of Kishangarh at Government Primary School on Sunday. Medicines were given to the patients free of cost, according to Mr R.S. Prasad, state coordinator of the organisation. A dental camp will be held at the same venue on August 29.

PANCHKULA
Workshop:
Sarpanches and farmers from 20 villages in Pinjore participated in a workshop on "awareness about benefits of clean water" organised by the Environment Society of Haryana at the office of the Block Development Officer (BDO) at Pinjore on Saturday.

Committee member: The Nationalist Congress Party has appointed Mr Prithvi Singh Ravish member of the Coordination Committee for Haryana, said Mr Zafar Akthar, observer of the party for the state.

Sanitation: The Panchkula Seva Samiti has sought better sanitation in the town. Mr Kapil Chadha, convener of the samiti, said handing over sanitation of some sectors to a private contractor did not improve the situation.

Demanded: The Residents Welfare Association has urged the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) to speed up the construction of waterworks in Sector 16 here.

Blood donation:
A blood donation camp was organised at the Civil Hospital on Sunday by the Phase VI Welfare Action Committee and the Rotary Club. Fortythree units of blood were collected.

Rain Storm-99:
X-Factor organised ''Rain Storm-99'', an event that had rain dances and songs, on Saturday evening at Go Karting, near here. The highlight of the evening was singer Shibani Kashyap of the ''Ho gayi hai mohabbat'' fame, who regaled the audience with some popular Hindi film songs.

Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Residents Welfare Society of New Defence Colony: Chief Patron — Mr Jaspal Singh; Patron — Major H.S. AMBALA
Case registered:
Officers of the HVPN raided a factory at Ambala cantonment on Friday and imposed a fine of Rs 6.21 lakh on a charge of power theft. A case has been registered against the owner of the factory.

Pistol recovered: The local police has recovered a .315 bore country-made pistol from Karnail Singh, a resident of Mulana, and registered a case against him under the Arms Act.

SIRSA
Two convicted:
Mr K.K.Goel, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, awarded two months imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1,000 to two accused under the Excise Act on Saturday. According to prosecution, the police recovered 50 bottles of country-made liquor from Krishan Kumar Khatri of Rania village and Rashem Singh of Budhimeri village on February 4,1996, near Khari Sureran village in this district.

Four injured: Four persons were injured in a firing incident between two groups at Kuttravadh village in this district on Friday. According to sources, the injured were identified as Mohinder Singh, Harnam Singh and Kala Singh. The matter has been reported to the police.

Robbery: In broad daylight robbery at Mandi Dabwali on Saturday, three miscreants snatched Rs 74,000 from Mr Vijay Shankar at gunpoint. He was coming after withdrawing the amount from Punjab National Bank. Vijay who received injuries was admitted to the Civil Hospital.

SONEPAT
Flood control measures:
Mr G.Prasanna Kumar, Commissioner, Ambala division, inspected the flood control measures being taken by the Irrigation Department along the Yamuna embankments in the Khadar tract of this district on Saturday. He directed the officials concerned to take effective steps for the completion of the on going works.

Electrocuted: Vikki (20) was electrocuted at a service station under construction near Barona village, 20 km from here, on Saturday. In another incident, a 40-year-old man, Tanga Ram, fell down in a well and killed at Garhi Jhinjhara village, 20 km from here, on Saturday.top

NURPUR
Nagni fair:
The district-level Nagni Mata fair will be celebrated on August 21. This was decided at a meeting of the Nagni Fair Committee held under the presidentship of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate.

SHIMLA
Dance troupe:
A dance troupe, comprising 14 dancers and musician, is leaving on Monday for Hungary and Egypt to exhibit " Himachal Pradesh heritage" by performing folk dance in both the countries. This was stated by the Arts and Language Department, Director , Mr K.R. Bharti, here. The troupe will give 20 performances in the visiting countries.

SOLAN
Liquor seized:
The Kandaghat police seized 2,200 pouches of country liquor and 180 bottles of IMFL from a Gypsy near Deogharat, 12 km from here, on Friday. The seizure has been third of its kind during the past few days in the district following intensification of patrolling on the highways by the SSP, Mr Rakesh Aggarwal.
