One arrested in abduction case

CHANDIGARH, Aug 7 — The SAS Nagar police has arrested a Sector 44 resident reportedly involved in the abduction of two minor girls, here today.

According to police sources, Harjit Singh Virk was arrested for helping his friends abduct the girls, both 14-year-olds and residents of the same sector. Both are students of a Phase 1 public school and are missing since August 2. The father of one of the girls had lodged a complaint with the police about the incident.

During initial interrogation, the accused disclosed the place the girls were and who else was involved in the crime. The accused were identified as Ravi Babbar, a goldsmith of Phase II, Avtar Singh and Amritpal Singh alias Chottu, of Sector 44, besides Rinku and Sikku, of Sector 22.

The police is also on the lookout for Sunita, a Phase III resident who had helped the girls borrow money from Babbar. The girls reportedly left their school bags in his shop. Sources said the abductors were likely to be arrested by late tonight.

Manager nabbed: Rajiv Kumar, the manager of a motel in Sector 36, has been arrested by the police for serving liquor without necessary permission to two guests — Sukhdev Singh of Bathinda and Paramjeet Singh, of Jalandhar. A case under Section 61 -1 - 14 of the Excise Act, has been registered at the Sector 36 police station.

21 held: The police has arrested 21 persons for committing various offences the city. Ten persons were arrested for creating nuisance at a public place while under the influence of liquor, six of whom were arrested in the jurisdiction of Sector 36 police station.

Nine persons were arrested for roaming under suspicious circumstances. Cases under Section 41 (2)/109, Cr P C have been registered. Two persons were arrested under preventive action.

Motorcycle stolen: Rajesh Kumar of hostel number 2, room number 47, Panjab University, reported to the police that his motorcycle (CH-01-Z-5364) was stolen from the parking of the hostel. A case under Section 379, IPC, has been registered.

ZIRAKPUR

Woman killed: One woman was crushed to death and a man was seriously injuried when a truck ran over a scooter near here on the Patiala road on Friday night.

According to sources, Harnek Kaur, a constable in Chandigarh police, died on the spot while Paul Singh, a CTU bus conductor, was injured. The duo were riding a scooter (HR-01-A-1095) when a truck (PB-09-A-6364) mowed them down.

The injured has been admitted to Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, Chandigarh. The police has impounded the truck and a case under Sections 279, 304-A and 377 of IPC has been registered against the truck driver.Back


 


GMSSS-16, 18 crush opponents

CHANDIGARH, Aug 7 — Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 16, and Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Sector 18, thrashed their respective opponents, Sacred Heart School, Sector 26, and Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, in today's matches played in the Ishwar Singh Memorial Basketball Tournament for girls being played here at IS Dev Samaj Senior Secondary School, Sector 21.

Other school teams who won their pool matches in the morning include Government Girls Senior Secondary school, Sector 26, and Sacred Heart School, Sector 26. The latter however lost their second match played in the evening.

In the Pool-B match, Sacred Heart School defeated Dev Samaj Junior Model School, Sector 21, 16-4. Half-time score was 10-2. Manik and Mehak each scored six points for the winners. Niti and Anju scored two points each for the losers.

In the second match, GMS, Sector 26, outclassed Governmetn Girls Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, 25-4. At half-time, the score was 10-4.

The main scorers for GMS-26 were Pushpa with 13 points and Geeta with nine points. Rinku of GGSSS-8 was the lone scorer for her team with four points.

In afternoon matches played between GGSSS-18 and Shivalik Public School-41, the former blasted the latter, 41-3 with the half time score of 20-2.

Ranjeeta and Sarita wrecked the SPS team by scoring 14 points each, followed by Anchal with six points. Ramya of SPS was the only scorer for her team with three points.

In the last match of the day, GMSSS-16 beat Sacred Heart-26, 18-4 with the half-time score of 8-2. Upjit, Gayatri and Harshita each scored four points for the winners while Mehak scored two points for the losers.

Both semi-finals will be played in the afternoon at 3.30 pm tomorrow.

Squash tournament : On the penultimate day of the Ranking Squash Tournament being played at theYPS, SAS Nagar, the seeds moved up with ease in their respective rounds. Top seed Kabir Dixit of the YPS in the under-12 section, breezed past Sayyamjit also of YPS, 9-0, 9-0, 9-0.

In the under-14 section, Harmeet entered the semi-finals by defeating Nimish of St Stephen's in a prequarterfinals match and Amit Gupta in a quarterfinal. Harmeet beat Nimish, 9-1, 9-0, 9-1, and defeated Amit, 9-1, 9-0, 9-0.

Second seed Dushyant also reached the semi-finals by defeating Madhur of St John's School, Sector 26, in the prequarterfinals and Hartaj Rarewala in quarterfinals. The scores were 9-0, 9-0, 9-2, in the first match and 9-0, 9-0, 9-2, in the second match.

Cricket tourney : A sparkling knock of 70 runs by Sanjay Sabharwal, ably assisted by Vaneet Chawla who contributed valuable 58 runs, helped Godrej Cricket Club beat Pheonix XI by 39 runs in the XIth Bathany Cup League Cricket Tournament played here at the CRPF grounds today.

GCC scored a huge total of 184 runs in the stipulated 20 overs while Pheonix XI could make only 145 runs for the loss of nine wickets in the given overs.

Brief scores: GCC — 184 for 2 in 20 overs (Sanjay Sabharwal 70, Vaneet Chawla 58, Rajesh Patha 52 n.o., Kulbir 2 for 40). Pheonix XI — 145 for nine (Prabhjot 42, Ravinder 33, Ajay Sikka 2 for 12, Naresh Dhingra 2 for 17, Vijay Pal Singh 2 for 21).

Tomorrow the quarterfinal will be played betwen GCC and Bombay CC while Gymkhna XI will take on Star CC.

Teg Bahadur School win

CHANDIGARH, Aug 7 — Guru Teg Bahadur Public School, Sector 15, edged out a fighting St Stephen's School, Sector 45, by a solitary goal scored by Bhavneet while St Soldier High School, Sector 28, defeated Government High School, Sector 38, by two goals to nil (Ranbir 11th minute, Vishal 12th minute) in the sixth Shivalik Football Trophy at the Panjab University grounds here today.

In other matches, results were as follows: Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 38 West, overpowered Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35 (Blue), 3-0; Government Model High School, Sector 28, beat Government High School, Sector 37 (NB), 2-0; Bloom Model School, Sector 21, defeated Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 32, 1-0; Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 40, beat Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35 (Red), 1-0; and Government Model High School, Sector 38, beat Government Model High School, Sector 26, 2-1.
