KAPURTHALA
Rotary Club:
The following have been installed office-bearers of the local Rotary Club: president — Dr Hari Singh; secretary — Mr Kanwaljit Singh Ahluwalia; vice-presidents — Mr Jagbir Singh, Mr Rattan Lal Jain, Mr Kiranjit Bawa and Mr Jai Paul Goyal; and treasurer — Mr J P Gupta.

Eye camp: The local Rotaract Club organised an eye camp at MDSD Senior Secondary School here on Friday. Dr J.N. Dutta, eye specialist, and his team examined 200 students at the camp. The club provided spectacles to 20 students. Medicines were given to students free of cost.

Traffic control: The District Administration had issued instructions to regulate the traffic rules in the district. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr V.K. Singh, said traffic rules would be implemented fully. The drivers of school buses have been directed to wear uniforms and with their name plates. School buses, three-wheelers and other vehicles will not be allowed to carry more passengers than the number sanctioned.

MALERKOTLA
Inaugurated:
A newly-built hall at Dera Baba Narsing Dass was inaugurated on Sunday. Dr Hari Chand Modi, president of the Consumers Forum, Chandigarh; Mrs Sudarshana Modi, Additional Sessions Judge, Chandigarh, Mr Jagdish Chand Aggarwal, President of the Consumers Forum, Moga; Mr Jaspal Singh Jassi, SDM were among those present on the occasion. The hall has been built by Mr Chaman Lal Jain in memory of his wife Nirmal Jain. A cultural programme was presented by the students of S.S. Jain Model High School.

PATIALA
Lok adalat:
The local Municipal Corporation settled 28 pending cases of house approval plan. Mr K.S. Kang, Commissioner, said a special lok adalat was held by the corporation on Saturday to settle these cases. As many as 35 cases were received at the adalat out of which 28 were settled on the spot. Mr Kang said the remaining cases had been referred to the official concerned.

PHAGWARA
Poll campaign:
The SGPC president, Bibi Jagir Kaur, addressed a press conference at the local Guru Nanak College on Saturday after inaugurating its new academic session. She also laid the foundation stone of the administrative block at the college. She said she would campaign for the SAD-BJP candidates in the forthcoming elections and asserted vehemently that she would not quit as a legislator.

TARN TARAN
Case registered:
The police here has registered a case under Sections 3761 and 511 of the IPC against Baldev Singh (38), a resident of Dalake village, for allegedly attempting to rape a 15-year-old girl of the same village. The girl belongs to a Dalit family. The girl was working as domestic helper in the suspect's house.

Four held: The Bhikhiwind police has arrested four members of a gang allegedly involved in theft of thread from the neighbouring states. The police, acting on information received from Sukhdev Singh, alias Sukha, a resident of Pangotta village, who was arrested on July 25 and thread rolls worth Rs 3 lakh were recovered from his possession. The other arrested gang members have been identified as Balbir Singh, alias Kala, Jasbir Singh, Kuldeep Singh, Rachhpal Singh. About 241 thread rolls worth Rs 18 lakh have been recovered from the arrested persons.

Cycle rally: At least 100 BSP (A) workers led by Ms Sawarn Kaur organised a cycle rally here on Saturday in support of its demand. The party is demanding that the name of Ram Tirath should be changed to Rishi Balmik Tirath. The party will observe August 15 as Black Day.top

Tree plantation: A tree plantation camp was organised jointly by Lions Club International, the State Bank of India, the District Blind Control Society and the PTA in Shishu Niketan School, Sector 22, here on Saturday. As many as 200 students took part in a poster painting competition on environment, pollution and eye donation. Harkaran of class V and Pushkar of class III were adjudged first and second, respectively, in the eye donation competition, Gourav Joshi and Arshdeep of class VIII were the winners in pollution and Parteek and Jitender of class IX were declared winners in the environment poster competition. Later, an eye check-up camp was organised by Dr K.S. Rana and his team from the Blind Control Society.

Annual function: The annual function of the NSS unit of the College of Nursing, PGI, was organised. Dr C.L.Narang, NSS Programme Coordinator, Panjab University, inaugurated the function and gave away prizes.

Elected: The following have been elected the office-bearers of the Kamboj Mahansabha, Banur and Rajpura: Chairman — Mr Ranjit Singh (Singhpura); President — Mr Sadhu Ram; Senior Vice-President — Mr Balbir Singh (Gharwan); and General Secretary — Capt Amrik Singh (Budanpur). Besides, the sabha has also elected 11 members to form a committee.top

JIND
Robbed:
Two armed robbers looted Rs 1.5 lakh from a bus passenger on Jind-Rohtak Road near Jai-Jai Wanti village in the district on Saturday evening. According to a report Mr Sat Narain, a trader, was on board a Haryana Roadways bus and was on way to Jind from Julana when the armed robbers entered the bus and snatched the money from the trader on gun point.

Murdered: A farmer, Ramphal, was murdered at Nagura village in the district. According to a report received here on Sunday a dispute over the sharing of canal water was said to be the cause behind the crime. The police has registered a case under Sections 302, 323 and 324 of the IPC against five persons, including two women.

Abducted: A 15-year-old girl is allegedly missing from Ratta Khera village. The father of the girl in a complaint to the police has alleged that his daughter had been abducted by four youths — Nanha, Suresh, Ajmer and Sanjay. The police has registered a case under Sections 363 and 366 of the IPC against the four persons.

Raped: A minor was allegedly raped by a health centre official at Dhamtan village in the district on Friday. The victim had reportedly gone to the centre for treatment where she was allegedly raped. The police has registered a case under Section 376 of the IPC and arrested the accused.

Elected:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the Readymade Vastra Vikrata Association: president — Mr Vijaibabu; vice-president — Mr Nemi Chand; general secretary — Mr Sanjay Sanghi; and treasurer — Mr Veer Chand.

Meeting: The office-bearers of BJP (Kanina mandal unit) will hold a meeting in anaj mandi on August 8 at Gobindibai Dharamsala. The state secretary Rao Shiv Ratan, state BJP Kisan Morcha President Ishwar Singh and former state president of the BJYM Gobind Bhardwaj will also take part in the meeting.

SIRSA
Suicide bid:
Jagjit Singh (25) of Sahuwala village in the district consumed some poisonous substance at his house on Saturday and was shifted to the Civil Hospital, Sirsa, in a serious condition for treatment. He was reportedly under depression.

Books released: The Deputy Commissioner, Dr Avtar Singh, released two religious books — “Divya Parkash Punj” and “Rammulakh Dayala” — at Divya Yog Sadhana Mandir on Sunday. The books have been written by Satish Abbi and were released at a function presided over by Mr Raghubir Chawla.

Theft case: Mohinder Singh of Sandlana village in Hisar district was arrested by the police here on Saturday. The police has recovered a stolen moped from his possession. While giving this information a police spokesman said on Sunday that the arrested person had stolen a moped belonging to a local resident, Mr Ashok Kumar on July 28. The police has registered a criminal case under Section 379 of the IPC.

Celebrated: A function was organised by ex-servicemen on Saturday to mark the birthday of Shaheed Udham Singh. Dr Avtar Singh, Deputy Commissioner, presided. While speaking on the occasion comrade Baldev Bakshi, a social worker and senior CPI leader of the district, paid tributes to Shaheed Udham Singh.

Misappropriation alleged: A criminal case under Section 409 of the IPC on charge of misappropriation of panchayat funds was registered against Bagrawat, former sarpanch of Balasar village, at Rania police station in the district on Saturday. In a complaint to the police Mr M.S. Dhir, Block and Panchayat Development Officer, Rania, after collecting complaints from villagers, alleged that the former sarpanch had misappropriated Rs 3.61 lakh of the panchayat.

Attacked: A dairy owner, Prem Kumar, was arrested by Odhan police in this district on Saturday, in a criminal case registered against him under Sections 323/326, IPC, on a complaint of Darshan Singh on Thursday. The complainant had alleged that the accused had thrown acid on him when he visited his dairy to settle some account.

Office-bearers: The following have been elected office-bearers of the all-India Telecom Employees Union ( Sirsa branch) here on Friday: president — Mr Pratap Singh; vice-president — Mr Gurmail Singh; general secretary — Mr Paras Singh, and treasurer — Mr Devi Lal.

SONEPAT
Procession:
Residents of Sector 15 residential colony of the Haryana Housing Board took out a procession here on Saturday evening in protest against the demolition of houses, shops and other structures by the-HUDA authorities. They raised anti-government, anti-HUDA and anti-district administration slogans and marched through the streets of the colony and reached the main market of Sector 14 where a rally was also held. The speakers criticised the HUDA authorities for demolishing the buildings without any prior notice and warned that if the demolition drive was not stopped, the residents would have no other alternative but to intensify their agitation and gherao the officials.

BILASPUR
Kala Baba:
The condition of Baba Kalyandass (90), popularly known as "Kala Baba" is improving at the PGI Chandigarh. He was rushed there after a car accident here three days ago. The Baba had received serious injuries in the accident and had developed breathing trouble later. This was stated by HP Health and Family Welfare Minister Jagatprakash Nadda.

Mahila mandal: The Mahila Mandal, Jabli, near here, organised a function in collaboration with the "HelpAge India" and distributed Rs 32,000 to 40 poverty-stricken elderly persons selected from the Bilaspur Sadar Development Block here on Saturday. Presiding over the function Chairman of the Bilaspur Sadar Panchayat Samiti Tilakraj Sharma praised the mandal for its welfare activities.

NAHAN
Sentenced:
Mr M.D. Sharma, Additional Sessions Judge, has sentenced Kamaljeet Singh of Shivpur village in the Paonta Sahib tehsil to life imprisonment and also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on him under Section 302 of the IPC. The accused had shot dead his own son, Surinder Singh, on October 13, 1998, with his licenced gun at his house after a domestic quarrel.

Lecturers' association: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Himachal Pradesh Lecturers Association, district Sirmour: president — Mr Vishwa Nath Sharma; senior vice-president — Dr Mohiram; and general secretary — Mr Ranvir Sharma.

Residents' protest: Residents of Rajnagar Colony here held a protest rally and organised a dharna in front of the PSEB office here on Saturday. The residents were protesting against the non-availability of electricity in their colony. The colony has been without power supply for the past six days due to some defect in transformers.

UNA
Van impounded:
The police here impounded a van (No HP 20-0874) on Saturday near Boduhi village, 18 km from here and seized 50 logs of khair wood worth Rs 20,000. This information was given by the SP, Dr D.P. Sharma, here on Sunday. He said a police party chased the van after it sped away ignoring the signal to stop. The driver and other occupants of the vehicle abandoned it and escaped under the cover of darkness. The police has registered a case under Sections 41 and 42 of the Forest Act and Section 379 of the IPC.

Two arrested: The police here has arrested two persons, in connection with the murder of a farmer in Palwal. The culprits had also taken away the tractor of the deceased. The arrested persons, Shishu and Parthem along with two other accomplices had allegedly killed Kartar Singh and threw his body in fields on February 8. The tractor has also been recovered by the police from a village in Bharatpur district in Rajasthan.top
