Bar Association:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the District Bar Association: President — Mr Tejinder Singh Salana; Vice-President — Mr Amrik Singh Nasrali; General Secretary — Mr Mohan Lal Singh; and Treasurer - Ms Gurpreet Kaur Lamba.

GURDASPUR
Rally:
Over 500 BJP workers, under the leadership of Mr Satpal Saini, the president of the district unit of the party, participated in a rally in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner and observed Virodh Divas on Friday. They presented a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner to be forwarded to the President, demanding that only that party should be invited to form a government at the Centre which had the support of over 271 Lok Sabha members.

Wheat produce: Farmers in this district who have brought their wheat produce to the market are a worried lot. Only a small portion of the total arrival of wheat has been purchased by the government procurement agencies. The agencies which have purchased wheat have not lifted the stocks or made payments to the farmers so far.

JALANDHAR
Wheat destroyed:
Fire destroyed wheat crop spread over 15 acres in Beer Valoki village of Mehatpur on Friday. The cause of the fire could not be known immediately.

Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Jalandhar district Amateur Wu-Shu Association: President -- Mr Rajiv Kumar; Senior Vice-President -- Mr Chaman Lal Dada; General Secretary -- Mr Ashok Kumar; and Treasurer -- Mr Naveen Sehgal.

KAPURTHALA
Tribute:
Tributes were paid to Major Ashok Sahrawat, a former student of Sainik School here, on Friday. He died while fighting militants in Kupwara Sector of Jammu and Kashmir on August 24, 1997. He was awarded Kirti Chakra posthumously on August 15, 1998. Maj Gen R. Karthikeyan, Chairman, Board of Administration of the school, presided.

Busted: With the arrest of five persons in district, the police claims to have busted a gang of thieves. The police recovered a truck, a tractor, a car, scooters, TV sets, gas cylinders and other stolen goods worth Rs 10 lakh from them. Mr Iqbal Singh, SSP, on Friday identified the accused as Harjinder Singh, Sukhdev Singh, Sohan Singh and Sukhdev Singh, son of Kashmira Singh, all hailing from Kapurthala district.

Mishap: Hardev Singh (13) of Sandhu Chatha village died in a road accident on Thursday. The accident took place when the deceased, riding a motorcycle, hit a cart. The police has registered a case under Sections 304 and 34 of the IPC against Resham Singh, the cart owner.

MOGA
Gang:
A gang of youths has been stealing diesel and petrol from cars and scooters parked in front of various banks and offices in this town. According to a complaint lodged by the vehicle owners with the authorities, the gang is also involved in removing stepneys from vehicles. A number of such cases have occurred at Baghapurana, Nihal Singhwala and other towns in this district.

PATHANKOT
Recruitment:
One hundred and fifty candidates were recruited in the Army at a camp held at Taragarh village in Narot Mehra. The camp was the first of its kind to be held in the village, claimed Mr Ram Lal, a BJP MLA from this assembly constituency. The camp was held by the Army unit at Kapurthala Training Centre in which 500 youths participated.

Voters list: Mr K.K. Garg, SDM-cum-Election Registration Officer, here informed on Friday that as per the programme of the Election Commission of India, rectification of voters list had started. Anybody having objection for the names included in the list or wanting to include his name in the voters list could register a complaint in the office by May 20.top

Mourned: The Parent Teacher Association of the Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35, mourned the death of Dr Y.P. Chathley, a former President of the PTA, here on Saturday. At the meeting, tributes were paid to Mrs Khurshinder Sharma, Patron-cum-Principal of the school, Mr M.K. Virmani, President of the PTA, and Mr M.N. Shukla, its Secretary.

Clash: A group of final-year B.Com students met the PU authorities on Saturday to protest against the clash of the final-year B.Com examination with the CA intermediate examination. Both examinations begin on May 3 and the latter will end on May 8. In a statement given to the press, the students said that they did not get a satisfactory reply.top

AMBALA
Seized:
The police has seized a car which was found abandoned near Ghahpur village on Thursday night. The district police chief, Mr M.S. Malik, said the car was suspected to have been used in a crime. He said two colour television sets had been found in it.

BHIWANI
Raids:
The District Civil Supplies Department conducted raids on fair price shops in the district and found 11 depot-holders indulging in malpractices. They were fined Rs 3,100, Mr K.S. Yadav, Deputy Commissioner Bhiwani, said here on Friday.

SIRSA
Staff association:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the Non-Teaching Staff Association of Government National Post Graduate College: President — Mr Rakesh Jain; and General Secretary — Mr H.S Sodhi. Mr Bagat Ram, Ms Rachna Diwan, Mr M.P. Sharma, Mr Devi Lal and Mr Subhash Chand were elected members of its executive committee.

Dharna: The district unit of the BJP staged a dharna in front of the local Ambedkar Chowk here on Friday. Mr Krishan Lal Saini, district chief of the BJP, alleged that the Congress and Communists had ruined the democratic fabric of the country by bringing about the downfall of the Vajpayee government.

Imprisoned: Mr Harbir Singh Dahia, Judicial Magistrate, here on Friday awarded two years’ imprisonment and a fine of Rs 500 to Raj Kumar, a resident near the local Malgodam road, and Vijay Kumar of Dawarkapuri in a criminal case. Surajbhan of Subhash Basti was awarded two years' imprisonment and a fine of Rs 200 for the same.

Nominated: Mr Veerbhan Mehta, a senior Congress leader and a former Chairman of the local Municipal Council, was nominated secretary of the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee on Friday.

Arrested: The police has arrested Gurtej Singh of Hansu village for allegedly poisoning his wife. According to police sources, a case had been registered on complaint by Mr Baggar Singh of Desumalkana village, brother of the deceased, Golo Devi. A case has been registered under Sections 304B, 498A, and 34, IPC.

SUNDERNAGAR
Duped:
Two foreigners were duped by Tibetans and a South Indian woman on Thursday at Rewalser, 30 km from here. According the police, Mr Derian (New Zealand) and Mr Rabion (England) were offered, prasad' by the three accused at a guest house in Rewalser, on April 21. Both fell unconscious after consuming the offering. The accused then took away valuables and Indian currency worth Rs 40,000. The police has registered a case.
