‘Women should play active role in politics’
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, April 11 — Mrs Suman Krishan Kant, president of the Mahila Dakshata Samiti (MDS), today advocated more active role for women in politics so that the quality of politics could improve and upright women are elected to Parliament and state assemblies.

Delivering a lecture on “Agenda for women in the 21st century” at the Lajpat Rai Bhavan here, the wife of the Vice-President, Mr Krishan Kant, said women were not demanding quota for themselves just to imitate men but to change the corrupt political system perpetuated for long by men.

Urging women to change the old social system detrimental to their upliftment, Mrs Kant called upon MDS volunteers to launch a sustained campaign against the dowry system. Instead of giving dowry to the girls, they should be educated in order to make them self-confident.

Stressing economic empowerment for women, she said setting up small and cottage industries would go a long way in providing jobs to women and making them self-reliant.

She urged the MDS volunteers to adopt colonies and villages for their overall development. Professionals from various fields should be associated in all these projects so that the needy and the poor get maximum benefits.

Earlier, Prof Pam Rajput, president of local branch of the MDS, in her introductory remarks, informed that in the year of the aged, the samiti was planning a senior women recreation centre at the bhavan.

An MDS volunteer from Himachal Pradesh, Ms Sehgal, called upon social organisations to work in the villages where a majority of the backward and oppressed people live.

Another volunteer from the state, Ms Mohindra, rued that there was no special district or state-level fora for redressing the grievances of women. She wanted the opening of MDS branches in all 12 districts of Himachal Pradesh.
