AMRITSAR
World Health Day: The Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences and Research here celebrated the World Health Day, 1999, by holding a symposium on the theme "Active Ageing Makes a Difference" and by holding a free medical check-up camp at the local Lalit Memorial Hospital. Dr Surinder Singh Cheema, Director-Principal, of the institute presided over the function and Dr Rajinder Singh, Civil Surgeon, was the chief guest.

ABOHAR
Theft:
Verka milk stock worth Rs 20,000 and other eatables were stolen from a milk bar at Nehru Park, in the heart of the town here. The bar is located near the residence of the Deputy Superintendent of Police. The total loss was estimated at Rs 50,000, sources said on Friday.

BATALA
Eye camp concludes:
A four-day eye camp concluded at Maharaja Jassa Singh Ramgarhia Public Hall here on Friday. As many as 83 eye operations were conducted by a team of doctors comprising Dr Gurcharan Singh and Dr Surjit Singh, both eye surgeons at the Civil Hospital, Gurdaspur. The camp was conducted by the local Sukhmani Sahib Seva Society to celebrate the tercentenary of the birth of the Khalsa. Free medicines, board and lodging were provided by the society.

JALANDHAR
Recruitment rally:
The Army will hold a rally for recruiting Sikh soldiers from April 15 to 25 at the Sikh Regimental Centre, Ramgarh Cantonment, Bihar. The candidates should be matriculates and aged between 16 and 21.
Medical camp:
To celebrate Dr Samuel Hahnemann's birthday, a medical camp will be organised at Ram Mandir, Baba Banda Bahadur Nagar here on April 11. Eminent doctors will examine the patients and provide free medicines to them.

LUDHIANA
Annual credit plan: The computerised annual credit plan of the district was launched by the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Arun Goel, here on Thursday. The plan amounting to Rs 1,313 crore has been prepared by Punjab and Sind Bank. There is a net increase of Rs 167 crore over the previous year's plan. The share under the priority sector is Rs 908 crore, which includes Rs 432 crore for agriculture, Rs 362 crore for the small scale industries and Rs 114 crore for the other priority sectors.
Talk on skull injuries: An update on skull injuries and brain-neurotrauma is being organised at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital here on Saturday. This programme is part of a series of educational programmes taken up for the benefit of practising surgeons of Punjab and neighbouring states.
Trade in flowers:
Mr Ary Chardon, floriculture consultant, Netherlands Management Cooperation Programme, visited Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) and held a meeting with the vice-chancellor and other scientists of the university. Mr Chardon said there was scope for international trade in flowers. With the help of a video film, he showed how the Netherlands had commercialised flower production and marketing. He observed that the PAU had the necessary expertise to help the farmers in taking up commercial flower production.

Nominated:
Mr Balwinder Singh Chaproda, Malerkotla, Mr Yash Aggarwal, Sangrur, Mr Harinder Singh, Moga, Mrs Pushpinder Kaur, Dina Nagar, Mr Sona Ram Lalka, Nabha, Mr Naseer Hargopal, Barnala, Mr Himmat Singh, Mansa, and Mr Roor Singh, Verka (Amritsar), have been nominated to the North Zone Regional Consultative Committee of the Food Corporation of India (FCI) by Mr Surjit Singh Barnala, Union Minister for Food and Supplies, according to a circular of the Deputy Manager, Coordination of the
FCI.

MOGA
Lemon prices:
Lemon prices have touched an all-time high in the district. A number of consumers said the existing retail price of Rs 90 per kg was the highest ever. Growers said the lemon crop was destroyed due to inclement weather and outbreak of certain diseases which affected the crops.

NANGAL
Arrested: Sanjay Kumar, a resident of Kathura village in Hamirpur, was arrested here and a stolen white Gypsy was recovered from him. The Gypsy, which was stolen from Hamirpur, had a fake number plate. Sanjay Kumar was wanted at the Nangal, Hamirpur, Ludhiana and Nadaun police stations for car thefts. A case under Section 411 of the IPC has been registered against him and he has been sent to the Ropar jail under judicial remand.

PATIALA
Jatha:
Ms Kamlesh Kaur, member, SGPC, will lead a women's jatha on April 11 from here to Anandpur Sahib to participate in "Mata Sahib Kaur Istri Samaroh". Mr Manmohan Singh Bajaj, member, Working Committee, SAD, disclosed this here on Thursday.
Inaugurated: Mr Rahul Bhandari, Assistant Commissioner, inaugurated a canteen at Government Senior Secondary School, Tripuri, here on Thursday. It was constructed by the Parent Teacher Association, according to a press note.
Complaints solved: As many as 15 out of 30 complaints were solved on the spot by Deputy Commissioner Jasbir Singh Bir at a 'open darbar' held in his office here on Thursday. Speaking on the occasion, the Deputy Commissioner urged the complainants to submit their complaints to the officials concerned at the lower level and approach him only if they did not get justice. He also said the old age pension scheme would be implemented on the recommendation of the village Sarpanch and Municipal Commissioner.
Honoured: The Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee President, Capt Amarinder Singh, and former Maharaja of Nabha Hanumant Singh were honoured at a function held here on Wednesday at Sidsar Gurdwara in Alohran village in Nabha subdivision. Sant Sukhdev Singh Alohran presented siropas to Capt Amarinder Singh and Maharaja Hanumant Singh at a reception hosted on the occasion.
Eye camp: The local Citizens' Welfare Society, Tripuri, will organise a free eye check-up and operation camp on Sunday at a dharamshala at Santoshi Mata mandir. Mr Mohan Gera, President of the society, said, free medicines would be provided to the patients. Dr M.S. Bhatia, Professor and Head of Eye Department of Rajindra Hospital, and his team, will perform the operations.

PHAGWARA
Workers get electric shock:
Three migrant workers got an electric shock when a iron girder they were holding aloft at a construction site accidentally touched an overhead electricity wire. One of the labourers was taken to a private hospital but was later discharged.

Memorandum: A delegation of the Federation of UT Employees and Workers on Friday submitted a memorandum of its demands to the Adviser to the Administrator. A statement given by the federation said the demands discussed regarded release of bonus, CCA, HRA and DA, besides regularisation of staff.
Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Water and Rent Office Employees Union: President — Mr Lal Chand Bagga; Vice-President — Mr Ramesh Verma; Secretary — Mr B.S. Nagi; and Cashier — Mrs Tara Rani.
Association formed: The ex-students of St Kabir Public School have decided to visit the school during its silver jubilee this year. They have formed an association called Kabir’s Roll of Old Students (KROS). According to Mr Pankaj Chandgothia, President of the association, the first meeting will be held on Sunday in the school to enrol the students of the present Class X and plan the silver jubilee celebrations.

Foundation stone:
Mr Surinder Singh, a member of Parliament form Bhiwani will inaugurate the building of the Government Primary Teachers Training Institute at Morni on Saturday. The Minister of State for Education, Mr Jagdish Yadav, will also be present on the occasion. The MP will also lay the foundation stone of a ‘bal bhavan’, a veterinary hospital, a boys’ and a girls’ hostel
Appeal: The Resident Welfare Association of Sector 2 has appealed to the Chief Administrator of HUDA to find a solution of the problem of growing of hedges and fences by the residents. A representative of the association, which called on the CA, was assured that the residents would be involved in working out the modalities regarding the implementation of a proposal about the use of open spaces outside the houses.

PANIPAT
Production bonus:
The All- Haryana Power Corporation Workers' Union has criticised the management of Panipat Thermal Power Plant for adopting an anti-employee attitude and said that although instructions had been issued by the Power Generation Corporation for the payment of production bonus, yet employees had not been paid so far. The bonus had already been paid to the employees of Faridabad Thermal Power Plant, it said.
"False" case:
Mr Satbir Kadyan, former MLA of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), urged the district police chief, Mr Manoj Yadav, to withdraw the "false" case against Mahabir of Kuran village. The police had registered a case against Mahabir for possessing five pistols, he alleged. He said if the case against him was not withdrawn, the INLD would launch an agitation against the police action.

SHAHABAD
Mass marriage:
A mass marriage function will be organised by the Rishi Markandeshwar Temple Committee and the local Lions Club in the temple complex here on April 14. As many as 51 poor girls will be married on the occasion, according to Mr Kesar Dass Gambhir, President of the committee.

SONEPAT
Murder accused held:
The Ganaur police has arrested five persons, including two women, in connection with the alleged murder of Dalit Ram Kishan of Lalehri Kalan village on April 1 last. The SSP, Mr K.Selvraj, told mediapersons here on Friday that the arrested persons were Binder alias Bindra, Surinder alias Kalan, Joginder, alias Thathi, all brothers, Roshni, their mother, and Sunita, wife of Jagbir.
Wages revised:
On the intervention of Mr D.N.Kaushik, District Labour and Conciliation Officer, a long-standing dispute between brick-kiln owners and workers over the revision of wages, was resolved at specially convened meeting held here on Thursday. It was unanimously decided to revise the wages under the Industrial Disputes Act.
Murder case solved:
With the arrest of two persons, the anti-crime branch of the district police, on Friday solved the alleged murder of a youth, Naresh, alias Kala, of Jagsi village on March 11 last. Those arrested are Satish, alias Brahma of Jagsi village (Sonepat) and Dalbir of Bhaopur village (Panipat).
Protest:
Several arhtiyas and retailers on Friday protested against the transfer of a Mandi Supervisor, Mr Jai Singh, from the vegetable and fruit markets in this city and demanded the cancellation of his transfer. Many arhtiyas said they were planning a one-day token-strike against the action of the Secretary-cum-Executive Officer of the local Market Committee.

SIRSA
Beaten:
Bhola Singh a jeep driver of Odhan in Sirsa district, was reportedly beaten up by five persons near. Rattankhera village, about 35 km from here on Thursday evening. According to sources, the accused had hired a jeep from Odhan taxi stand for Ramgarh village and were under the influence of liquor.
Trucks catch fire:
Two trucks loaded with empty jute bags of CONFED, caught fire due to sparking at Ellenabad subdivision of the district on Wednesday evening. According to information received on Thursday , these trucks were parked under a electricity wire .
Rozgar yojna:
Various nationalised banks in the district have sanctioned 209 cases amounting to Rs 117.45 lakh, sponsored by the District Industries Centre, for financial help under the Prime Minister Rozgar Yojna. Dr Avtar Singh, the Deputy Commissioner, said financial help amounting to Rs 22.10 lakh had been provided to beneficiaries belonging to different walks of life to set up their own ventures under the PMRY scheme.
Murder: A case against Karamjeet Kaur of Dhani Maujuwali in the district was registered on Thursday for allegedly murdering her father-in-law and throwing his body in a canal with the help of her father and brothers. According to the police, a case under Sections 302, 201, 452, 506 and 34 of the IPC was registered on the complaint of Ms Naseeb Kaur, wife of the deceased. Karamjeet Kaur was widowed about a year and a half ago. She wanted the land which her father-in-law had kept for his livelihood after the division of property.

Inauguration: Dr Sushil Indora, MP inaugurated a dharamshala on Thursday at Ellenabad constructed by the local Dhanik Sabha. Dr Indora donated a sum of Rs 1.5 lakh for the construction of the Dharamshala. Earlier, he also laid the foundation stone of Sain dharamshala at Ellenabad and announced a grant of Rs 2.5 lakh for its construction.
