Fake licences: The police here has arrested imposters who were making huge amounts of money by issuing fake driving licences. The SSP, Mr Gurdev Singh Sahota, said the police had arrested Ashok Kumar and Rajinder Singh in this connection while other members of the gang had absconded. Some duplicate stamps of the District Transport Officer were also found from them. A case under Sections 420, 466, 468, 471 and 120-B of the IPC, has been registered.

Clothes distributed: The local Inner Wheel Club, a women’s wing of the International Lion Club on Monday distributed 50 bed sheets, 50 pillows with covers, winter clothes, 100 kg wheat, vegetables, fruits and dry fruits among the Vridh Ashram inmates of old age persons Home Anarkali, Batala. These were distributed by Mrs Surinder Taak president Inner Wheel Club, Mr Annu Kwatra, chairperson, Gurdaspur district Inner Wheel Club.

LUDHIANA

Protest: The Aurat Mukti Morcha organised a rally in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Monday to protest against the hike in bus fares and power tariff.

Coaching centre: Free coaching classes for the bank clerical examination, training for typewriting course at the UGC and a coaching centre for the minorities were inaugurated at the local Government College, on Saturday by Mr T.S. Sohi, Additional DPI (Colleges), Punjab.

PATIALA

Orthopaedic camp: The local Lions Club (Central) and the State Bank of Patiala (Rajindra Hospital branch) will organise an orthopaedic camp at the community centre, Tripuri here on October 2. Medicines free of cost will be given to poor patients.

PHAGWARA

Cattle stolen: A gang of more than 12 robbers took away 12 buffaloes from five farmhouses of nearby village Chaheru on the night of Friday and Saturday. They also robbed inmates of cash on Monday. However, the amount looted could not be confirmed. The robbers tied inmates with ropes and transported cattle in a truck parked on the outskirts of the village towards the GT road. Some of the gangsters spoke Hindi. Unconfirmed reports said they were armed.

Roof caves in: One person died and two were injured when tinned roof of a bank caved in on Sunday afternoon near the sugarmill chowk on the GT road. The deceased was identified as Satta of Salarpur village. The injured include Joginder Ram of Sundra village and Binder of Kahna Dehsian. One was hospitalised here with fractures. The workers were repairing roof of the extension counter of the Punjab and Sind Bank at the local Oswal Agrosugar Mill premises.

PPCC cell chief: The Chairman of the Backward Classes Cell, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, Mr Lakhwinder Singh, has appointed Mr Gurinder Pal Singh Rehal as state general secretary of the cell. Mr Rehal has also been appointed in charge for strengthening the backward classes cell in the Hoshiarpur, Ropar, Nawanshahr and Fatehgarh Sahib districts.

Ministerial union: The following have been elected office-bearers of the local unit of the Punjab State Ministerial Services Union: patron — Mr Pritam Singh; president — Mr Kuldeep Singh; senior vice-president — Mr Rachhpal Singh Randhawa; general secretary — Ms Somawanti; and treasurer — Ms Hardeep Kaur.

GURGAON

Power plant: Mr Narain Singh, Minister for Technical Education, Haryana said that Rs 1163 crore would be provided for a 432 mega watt power plant at Faridabad. The plant will be built by the National Thermal Power Corporation. The first unit of 146 mega watt would be available in January 1999, the second unit mega watt in March 1999. The plant will be completed at the end of next year and provide 90 lakh units of power per day to Haryana has the capacity. The plant to provide 24-hour power supply to Haryana.
PTA: A meeting of the leaders of the Parent Teachers Association was held under the presidentship of Ms Kavita Goel, principal Government Senior Secondary School, Gurhi (Junction). The following have been elected office-bearers of the PTA: president — Mr Shyam Bihari Jain; and cashier — Mr Umang Kapoor.

HISAR

Exhibition: A three-day exhibition of foreign and Indian books began at CCS Haryana Agricultural University here on Monday. Dr Randhir Singh, Co-ordinator (Research), inaugurated the exhibition.

KAITHAL

Injured: An employee of the local civic body was injured seriously when he was hit by a tractor near the district courts here on Monday. In another incident, two students of the local RK SD Post Graduate College were injured, one of them seriously, when they were allegedly attacked by a group of students, armed with lathis and sharp-edged weapons, near Pehowa chowk on Monday. Cases have been registered against persons involved in both the incidents.
Booked: The police arrested seven persons on Sunday from different parts of the town for allegedly playing satta. The accused have been booked under the Gambling Act.

SIRSA

Suicide: Sohan Lal Bajigar (45), father of seven children of Kharia village in Sirsa district reportedly consumed certain poisonous substance at his village on Saturday and died within few hours. The cause of suicide could not be known. The matter is being investigated.
Bad sewerage: Resentment prevails among residents of Aggarsain Colony, Kirti Nagar, Begu road and Patel Nagar here against the local Public Health authorities as sewerage in these localities has collapsed. Mr Raj Kumar Verma and Mr Radhey Shyam Sharma both municipal councillors Sirsa alleged that dirty water was overflowing from manholes and authorities concerned had not been taking interest to solve the problems. They warned that in case the problems were not solved soon they would be forced to stage a dharna in front of the Public Health Office.

SONEPAT

Body found: The body of a youth was found hanging from a tree outside Ganaur town, 16 km from here on Saturday. The body has been sent for a post-mortal examination.
Electrocuted: Rajbir (42) of Rajpur village was electrocuted at the village, 10 km from here on Saturday. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination.
Suicides: Renu (18) reportedly committed suicide by taking insecticide tablets in her house at Raipur village on Saturday. A family quarrel is stated to be the cause of the suicide. According to another report, Veena (15) also committed suicide by consuming poison in her house at Panchsheel Colony on Saturday.
Succumbed: Akbar(50) who had sustained multiple injuries in a group clash at Pipli Khera village last week, succumbed to his injuries at the Civil Hospital here on Saturday. A case has been registered against the alleged assailants.

UDHAMPUR

Pest management: The Department of Agriculture here organised an integrated pest management camp at Chak village. The Chief Agriculture Officer, Mr Mohan Lal Gupta, highlighted the quality and quantity of the production of crops at the camp.
Torched: A group of militants have torched the house of Suram Singh at Hinder village in the Arnas area of this district, after dragging out the inmates and thrashing them. The militants escaped before the police could reach there.
