leader shot KARACHI, Sept 29 (AFP) A provincial leader of the Pakistan Muslim League party was shot dead today as a general strike paralysed Karachi, the police said. Najeeb Shah (50), the PML's joint-secretary in the southern province of Sindh, was attacked in the Karachi's eastern Soldier Bazar area. The unidentified gunmen entered Shah's office and sprayed him with bullets, killing him instantly, the police said. The assailants fled in a car, shooting into the air. Ratan Shastri dead JAIPUR, Sept 29 (PTI) Doyen of women's education and co-founder of internationally acclaimed Vanasthali Vidyapeeth Ratan Shastri died after a prolonged illness today. Ratan Shastri (86) is survived by three sons and three daughters. She found the vidyapeeth with her husband and former Chief Minister Hiralal Shastri's cooperation in 1929 in memory of her late daughter, family sources said. Ratan Shastri was honoured with Padma Shri (1955) and Padma Bhushan (1975). Financial emergency PATNA, Sept 29 (PTI) A Samata Party leader of Bihar today demanded the declaration of financial emergency in the state and asked the Union Cabinet to return its recommendation to President K.R. Narayanan seeking an imposition of President's rule. The people of the state were "disappointed" after the President rejected the recommendations, general secretary of the party's Bihar unit, Prem Chandra Mishra said in a press statement. Naxal violence HYDERABAD, Sept 29 (UNI) Naxalites belonging to the People's War Group (PWG) blasted the excise and prohibition office at Kondagal village, in Mahbubnagar district of Andhra Pradesh, early today. The police said here that the extremists blasted the office with explosives. Further details are awaited. Administrative laws NEW DELHI, Sept 29 (PTI) The commission on review of administrative laws would submit its report to Cabinet Secretary Prabhat Kumar tomorrow. The four-member commission, headed by P.C. Jain was constituted in May to undertake a review of steps taken by various ministries and departments for the review of administrative laws, regulations and procedures administered by them and follow-up action for repeal and amendment. |
