4 shot in Pak
KARACHI, Sept. 19 (AFP) — Four persons, including a political activist and an year-old baby, were shot dead today in Pakistan’s violence-plagued port city of Karachi, the police said. Irfan Beg, 30, an activist of former Premier Benazir Bhutto’s Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP), was killed in central Liaquatbad area after being kidnapped.

60 dead in Malda
MALDA, Sept 19 (PTI) — New wards have been opened in the sadar hospital here to cope with increasing cases of gastro-enteritis which has so far claimed 60 lives and affected 6,000 in flood-ravaged Malda district of West Bengal. The District Health Officer, Dr Shyamal Jha, said 60 to 70 patients, most of them from rural areas, were being admitted to the sadar hospital daily.

Laden aide held
WASHINGTON, Sept 19 (AFP) — The German police has arrested a top aide of Saudi billionaire Osama bin Laden, The Washington Post reported today quoting government sources. The FBI and the CIA helped the police in southern German state of Bavaria in arresting Mamduh Mahmud Salim on Wednesday, according to the paper.

MP escapes attack
CHENNAI, Sept 19 (PTI) — Former TMC MP L. Adaikalraj, who recently joined the Congress, had a miraculous escape when a group of people attempted to attack him near Peravarani town in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu yesterday, reports received here said today. Mr Adaikalraj was visiting the town to address a public meeting where a number of TMC volunteers were scheduled to join the Congress.

216 missing
MANILA, Sept 19 (AFP) — Five persons are confirmed dead, 216 missing and 232 were saved after a Philippine ferry sank overnight near the mouth of the Manila bay before midnight yesterday. The navy and the ferry owners today said they hoped more people might survive in addition to those saved so far. Earlier, only 147 were known to have been rescued.

ESMA invoked
BHOPAL, Sept 19 (UNI) — The indefinite strike by more than six lakh government employees and officers in Madhya Pradesh continued for the second day today even as the strike has been declared illegal. However, offices remained closed today as it was the third Saturday. Services like drinking water supply, electricity and hospital services were normal yesterday. The state government last night invoked the ESMA, 1979.

BKKP merger soon
NEW DELHI, Sept 19 (PTI) — The Bharatiya Kisan Kamgar Party (BKKP) will give a formal approval to its merger with the Lok Dal when its national council meets here on September 29. The meeting would discuss the political and economic situation in the country and formalise strategy for the forthcoming assembly elections in four states, a party release said here today.

Narrow escape
GUWAHATI, Sept 19 (UNI) — Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Western Range) B.B. Misra and Additional Superintendent of Police Deepak Kumar escaped an attempt on their lives even as ethnic clashes between Bodos and Santhals continued during the past 24 hours. Official sources said the DIG was leading a police party to the trouble-torn areas, when Bodo militants opened fire near Jemagaon village.

Blast kills 29
ALGIERS, Sept 19 (AP) — A bomb exploded inside a market near the city of Tiaret yesterday, killing at least 29 persons and injuring 110 others, hospital sources said. The attack was announced in a brief statement issued by the Algerian security forces. The statement said seven of the injured were in serious condition. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the explosion.

5 Iranians freed
KABUL, Sept 19 (Reuters) — The Taliban militia today freed five Iranians in a goodwill gesture to ease tense relations between the two neighbours and asked Teheran to free Taliban prisoners from Iranian jails. Taliban spokesmen Abdul Hai Mutmean said the five were among "military" drivers captured when the militia seized the northern town of Mazar-i-Sharif from Opposition factions last month. "They were freed this afternoon as a sign of our willingness to improve relations with Teheran, "Mutmean told Reuters.
