Urged
The Abohar Bar Association submitted a memorandum to the Punjab Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, here on Sunday and urged him to upgrade Abohar subdivision as a district headquarters.

Elected
Mr Ramji Dass Shastri of Barnala was unanimously elected president of the district unit of the Sangrur Brahmin Sabha on Sunday. He was elected for two years.

Condemned
The district president of the National Students Union of India, Mr Amarinder Singh Tikka, has condemned the administration of the local Shaheed Bhagat Singh College of Engineering and Technology for asking the striking students of the third semester to vacate the college and hostel on Friday.

JALANDHAR

Died
Kamlesh of Bulandpur village, who was admitted with burns in the Civil Hospital here on September 6 died on Sunday, police sources said. She had suffered the burns while working on a stove.
Passports issued

The local passport office has processed passport applications received till June 12. The processed passports have been sent to the persons concerned.

Quiz contest
The Bharat Vikas Parishad organised an inter-school quiz contest at Vidya Bharti School on Sunday. Ankur of Summer Field Public High School won the first prize while Mukesh and Deepak of Arya High School won the second and third prizes, respectively.

Gangs busted
The district police claimed to have busted three gangs of thieves and arrested 28 persons during the past one week. Ornaments, vehicles, narcotic drugs and a huge quantity of tea were seized from them, Mr Kuldip Singh, SSP, said on Sunday.top

Residents' complaint
Residents of Sector 46 on Monday alleged that proper procedure was not followed in the election to the Residents' Welfare Society recently. In a representation, they urged the authorities concerned to order a re-election under an independent officer elected and appointed by the residents.
Student union
The newly formed DAV College Students Union has announced Srupinder Singh Brar as presidential candidate for the student body elections on September 18, a press note said here on Monday. Kushaldeep Singh Jonny will contest for the post of vice-president.

The following have been elected office-bearers of the Non-Teaching Employees Union in DAV College, Sector 10: president — Mr Surinder Kumar Sharma; vice-president — Mr Ram Charan Yadav; general secretary — Mr Roop Narain Bariwa; and secretary — Mr Satish Kumar Gupta.
Scribe elected
Mr Harish Bhanot, journalist, has been elected as chairman of the Sarvhitkari Educational Society, a press note said here on Monday. Over 300 delegates participated at the meeting.

The Lions Club, Chandigarh city, has honoured three teachers of Sohana village for their meritorious services. The three, Jasbir Singh, Harjinder Singh and Yash Pal Garg, have been teaching in a school in Sohana.
Competition

Beant Kaur of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 20-D, stood first in the on-the-spot essay and poem-writing competitions in Punjabi organised by the Languages Department, Punjab. A fancy dress competition was held at Dev Samaj College of Education for Women, Sector 36, in which Gurjot Singh of the Govt Model Sr Sec School, Sec 20-D, stood first and Mandeep Kaur, also of the same school, stood third.top

AMBALA

Cycle safari
A cycle safari, Pine Topchi-98, was flagged off by Major-Gen A.K. Vasudev, GOC, Artillery division, from the cantonment here on Sunday for Gurdaspur. The safari, which was flagged off from Meerut on September 9, would terminate at Tibri on September 28. The team is led by Capt Naveen Sharma.
Memorial lecture
Prof S. Mohan, Director, Central Scientific Instruments Organisation, Chandigarh, will deliver the ninth Gian Chand Jain Memorial lecture on "The role of instrumentation in improving the quality of life" at 38, Industrial Estate, Ambala cantonment on Tuesday.

Truck seized
The police seized an unclaimed truck in Mangar village on Saturday. Two carcasses of cows were found in the truck. The police has registered a case.
Firing incident
Jagbir (26) was injured seriously in an exchange of fire between two groups in Solda Bagpur village on Saturday. In another incident Partap Singh was killed when a vehicle hit him on the national highway. The police has registered cases.
Meditation camp
A three day Osho meditation camp organised by Ma-Dev-Gyata concluded here on Saturday. More than 100 followers of Acharya Rajneesh from all over the country participated in the camp. Swami Krishan Dev Bharti of the Osho Anandnav Sanyas Commune delivered discourses during the camp.

The police has registered a case of forgery and cheating against Rajpal and Kartar for selling a forged question paper of the entrance exam of the JBT course.top

Senior citizens
The State Bank of Patiala has introduced a "no queue" scheme for senior citizens in Himachal Pradesh. Mr P C Sood, Assistant General Manager of the bank, said all branches had been asked to ensure that senior citizens did not have to wait in queues.
