Aim is to reach final: Azhar DHAKA, Oct 27 (PTI) Captain Mohammad Azharuddin is poised to make history in one-day cricket and his team-mates are all set to gift him a "memorable win" when India take on Australia in the third quarterfinal match of the Wills International Cup Cricket Tournament here tomorrow. Azharuddin is one match shy from being the first player to have played 300 one-day internationals and 95 runs short of becoming the most successful limited overs batsman ever. The 35-year-old Indian skipper, the worlds most capped one-day player, has 8554 runs under his belt and he would like to have crack at the West Indian legend Desmond Haynes (8648) record in his 300th international tomorrow. "It will be a great feeling if I could do the two records at the same time, but I will treasure this match only if India win," Azharuddin said. And, nothing more than a clash with Australia, against whom India have had great successes early this year, should provide a stage to achieve that feat. India would like to shrug off the memories of their humiliating Test defeat against Zimbabwe and Australia, fresh from its historic triumph against formidable Pakistan, should provide an explosive contest at the Bangabandhu Stadium here. "We will play a positive game and continue the winning streak in Dhaka. Our aim is to reach the final of this mini World Cup," said Azharuddin who returns to Dhaka where he equalled former Aussie skipper Allan Borders record of 273 one-dayer appearances during the Independence Cup in January. The wristy batsman, who retained his captaincy despite India losing the one-off Test to Zimbabwe early this month, dedicated his appearance tomorrow to his grandfather Mohammed Vajeuddin, who died a week before Azhars sensational Test debut in 1984. He, however, is not bothered about records. "It is a continuing process. People only remember those who set the record first," he said. India achieved back-to-back victories in Dhaka winning the Asia Cup in 1988 and the Independence Cup in January and are looking forward to continue the winning streak. "You become lucky by performing well. We are lucky to be here for the third time. We will try our luck," a beaming Azhar said. "Australia are always a tough side to beat and they will be on a high after their Test series win in Pakistan," he said. India defeated Australia to lift the Coca Cola Cup in Sharjah in April when the two countries last met. On the knockout system of the tournament, Azhar said he believed in making least mistakes as a first step towards winning a one-dayer. "There are no second chances here and none of us can afford to have bad day." India will bank heavily on Sachin Tendulkar, who was on song against the Aussies in India and Sharjah earlier this year. India had nets in the evening while the Australians practised in the morning on a clear sunny day. The Aussies arrived here
minus Test captain Mark Taylor, who was replaced by Steve
Waugh, the one-day skipper. |
England's hopes depend on Gough: Warne MELBOURNE, Oct 27 (AP) Injured Australian star Shane Warne believes Englands Ashes hopes depend more on gritty paceman Darren Gough than his own presence in the five-Test series. Warne aims to take a major step towards proving his fitness for the November 20 first Test when he attempts to bowl in the nets and in a match for his district team within the next week. He has two Sheffield Shield matches before the Test and if he plays in both he expects to get his spot back to meet England in the Brisbane series-opener. Warne did some light bowling in the nets last week and then scored a century for his district team on Saturday. He had further treatment on his shoulder injury but yesterday was looking forward to stepping up his practice. "I want to get up there and then start to rip a few out and knock a few people over in the nets and then hopefully play on Saturday," Warne said. "If I can play the next two Shield games then Im a big chance for the Test, but if I can only play one or none then Im no chance." England captain Alec Stewart has said he wants Warne in the Tests so that Australia wont have any excuses if it loses. England has prepared for the record-breaking leg-spinner, bringing in a former Australian Test player Peter Philpott to help its batsmen get ready for a meeting with Warne. But Warne believes Englands hopes are in their own hands particularly those of Gough, who has yet to stay fit through a five-Test series but has played several inspired games against Australia. If England has any chance, Darren Goughs the guy theyre going to have to keep on the park, hes going to have to perform," Warne said. "If Gough doesnt bowl as well as he can, Australia will probably win comfortably. But by saying that, I dont think England will be a pushover." In Perth, England was already preparing for Warne, with several local leg-spin bowlers invited to test the batsmen at practice. Afterwards, Philpott said England must attack Warne. "With a bowler of the quality of Warne if you just sit and wait its a matter of time before you get out," Philpott said. "You have got to have some positive play in trying to attack him. You cant just rely on survival, it doesnt work." Philpott, a professional leg-spin coach who played eight Tests for Australia, said England may give wrist spin more respect than it deserved. "Im sure that right around the world and particularly in New Zealand, England and South Africa there has been a slight misunderstanding of wrist spin through lack of exposure," Philpott said. "Consequently, they have developed mystiques that arent quite there but theres only a certain amount any leg-spinner can do and its all logical, theres nothing mysterious." Meanwhile paceman Dean Headley was unable to train for a second day running because of his knee injury. "When he was finishing his spell yesterday he slipped on the crease and felt a little bit of pain in the inside of his knee," said physiotherapist Wayne Morton. "He has a bit of soreness, tenderness and a bit of swelling but it is only the third day so as a precautionary measure we have rested him." |
Taylor warns England KARACHI, Oct 27 (Reuters) Australia captain Mark Taylor warned England yesterday to be aware of the prowess of his team after they won their first series in Pakistan for 39 years. England arrived in Australia last Friday and face Australia in the first Test of the Ashes series in Brisbane next month. "Last time we played England at home four years ago, we won the series 3-1 after having lost the series 1-0 to Pakistan. Now we have beaten Pakistan 1-0 so I am sure the result of the Ashes would be more convincing for us," Taylor told reporters after his team drew the third and final cricket Test. "Of the top order, five batsmen scored centuries, Lehmann scored 98 at Rawalpindi while Ricky Ponting scored 76 and 43 at Peshawar. "Glenn McGrath bowled splendidly in the series while Stuart MacGill was brilliant in the first Test at Rawalpindi. Shane Warne should be fit for the Ashes, which makes our team a combination of match-winners." Taylor was not happy with the fielding. "We dropped catches in every Test. This is the only department in which we will have to improve," he said. But this detracted little from the satisfaction of winning the test series. |
England 'keeper Russel retires LONDON, Oct 27 (Reuters) English wicketkeeper Jack Russell has retired from international cricket after 11 years, the BBC reported today. Russell, 35, made the announcement in Dhaka where he played his final match in the one-day Wills International Cup against South Africa on Sunday. Russell, who made his Test debut against Sri Lanka in 1988, played 54 Tests for England. He said he made his decision after he was left out of the party for the current Ashes tour of Australia. |

National
Games to end on Baisakhi day CHANDIGARH, Oct 27 The 2000 National Games, allotted to Punjab by the Indian Olympic Association at its annual general meeting in New Delhi yesterday, will be held from March 31 to April 13, 2000, to coincide with the culmination of the tercentenary celebrations of the birth of the Khalsa and the diamond jubilee of the Punjab Olympic Association, according to Mr Arvind Khanna, secretary-general of the Punjab Olympic Association. Mr Arvind Khanna said it was proposed to host competitions in 25 disciplines at three centres Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Patiala. The water sport events would be held at Chandigarh. Mr Khanna said a few events might be held at Anandpur Sahib as well. It had been recommended, he said, that all the games of states sports associations at present affiliated with the Punjab Olympic Association would form an integral part of the games. The proposals to the number and names of sports disciplines to be conducted and the exact venues of the competitions would be formally ratified at the forthcoming annual meeting of the general body of the Punjab Olympic Association to be held on November 14 next at Chandigarh. Mr Khanna was sure that since the state had created the necessary infrastructure when the National Games were allotted to Punjab in 1989 it would not be difficult for the state to host the games. Mr Khanna recounted the efforts made by the Punjab Olympic Association with the backing of the state government to get the games allotted to the state. "The POA had full backing of the Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, and this made it possible for the state to win the honour to host the first National Games of the new millennium." In this context, Mr Khanna recollected that Punjab had earlier been allotted the third National Games to be organised in 1989 but were cancelled at the last moment due to the unfavourable law and order situation in the state at that time. These games were shifted to Maharashtra and organised finally in 1994 at Pune and Mumbai. Mr Khanna added that the Punjab Olympic Association delegation headed by the president, Mr Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, had met the Chief Minister on October 24 and were assured of full support by the state government. Mr Badal at that time had also talked to Mr Suresh Kalmadi, president of the Indian Olympic Association, and had told him that the state government would extend all support to the POA to conduct the National Games in the state. Besides Mr Dhindsa and Mr Khanna the high-powered delegation of the state to the meeting of the Indian Olympic Association at New Delhi yesterday included Mr Nusrat Ali Khan, Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, the Principal Secretary (Finance), Mr Rajan Kashyap, the Principal Secretary (Sports), Mr B.R. Bajaj, and the Director of Sports, Col Raminder Singh. Punjab has had the unique
distinction of organising the inaugural National Games of
the current century in 1924 when the Punjab Olympic
Association was founded at Lahore. Prior to Independence,
the National Games were held six times in Punjab. In the
post-Independence era Punjab has held the National Games
only once in 1956 at Patiala. |
Foreign flavour for Rovers Cup MUMBAI, Oct 27 (PTI) Three foreign teams, including the Iranian Football Club of Dubai, would be the main attraction in the Rovers Cup Football Tournament to begin at the Cooperage from November 16 to December 3. The convener of the tournament and former secretary of the Western India Football Association (WIFA), Mr Parveez, told newsmen here today that the Bangladesh Football Association had promised to send the best club side for the Rovers cup. However, the name of the club will be known within a couple of days, he added. The third team would be either the Pas Club or the Foulad (name of a steel plant) football team (both from Iran). The Pas Club, considered to be one of the strongest teams in Asia, consists mostly of national players, he said. As the Iranian national football team would be playing at the Bangkok Asian Games it may not be possible for the Pas Club to take part in the Rovers Cup without their top players in which case Foulad FC would fill the gap, he added. The Indian challenge would be spearheaded by reigning champions and Calcutta giants Mohun Bagan followed by JCT, Phagwara, Indian Telephone Industries (ITI), Bangalore, Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB), State Bank of Travancore (SBT), Kerala and FC Kochin. The Mini Rovers Cup, consisting of 28 teams, would start from October 29, Mr Parveez said. Some of the teams from Goa for the main Rovers Cup would be Vasco Football Club, Salgaocar Club and Churchill Brothers while Mahindra and Mahindra, Air-India and Bengal- Mumbai Football Club (BMFC) are the three teams from Mumbai. The exact number of teams for the main Rovers Cup would be known during the Mini Rovers Cup, Mr Parveez said. The teams for the Mini Rovers Cup include Peerless from Calcutta, Nalco Sports Club of Orissa, Oil India from Assam, Hyderabad XI, Chennai Customs and several other district teams from Maharashtra. The finals of the Mini Rovers Cup would be held on November 13 while the main Rovers Cup final would be held either on December 3 or on December 5. The date for the final would be fixed after consultation with the All-India Football Federation, Mr Parveez added. Some of the matches in the
main Rovers Cup would be held under floodlights. |
East Bengal, Bagan to clash in semis NEW DELHI, Oct 27 (PTI) East Bengal sailed past Mahindra and Mahindra in the last quarterfinal league match, to set up a semifinal clash with Mohun Bagan in the Kelvinator-Durand Cup Football Tournament at Ambedkar Stadium here today. In the first semifinal tomorrow, Mahindras will take on group A winners Air-India in an All-Mumbai affair. Mahindras finished second in group B with six points from two wins and one loss. East Bengal topped the table with seven points. In the East Bengal-Mahindra match, Ghanaian striker Sulley Musah scored the all-important goal in the 25th minute for the Calcutta league champions to grab full points for his side to make the second semifinals on Thursday an all-Bengal engagement. Musah scored off a Renedy Singh flag kick as he sprinted from the edge of the box to beat the rival custodian with a diving header to bulge the net. Earlier, in the other group B quarterfinal encounter, a spirited Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB), hoping for a semifinal berth, edged out a rather depleted Army XI 2-1 to finish third with four points. Sukhbir Singh opened the account for the Punjab men in the 38th minute off a Kuldip cross while the latter consolidated the lead, three minutes into the second half. Irudayaraj scored a consolation goal for the Army men in the 65th minute. |
Harbhajan to be sent to England MUMBAI, Oct 27 (PTI) Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, whose bowling action was found to be suspect by the International Cricket Council, would be soon sent to England to rectify the anomaly. Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Jayawant Lele, told PTI here today that the details on who would accompany him and when were still awaited. "We should get a clear picture by the first week of November ", he said. Off-spinner Rajesh Chauhan too had visited England along with former Test off-spinner EAS Prasanna to rectify his bowling action last year. Eighteen-year-old Harbhajan was left out of the Dhaka-bound Indian team on an International Cricket Council (ICC) directive after the ICC match referees Peter Van Der Merwe of South Africa and Ranjan Madugalle of Sri Lanka had given adverse reports on the off-spinners bowling action. Either Prasanna or another former off-spinner and Test umpire S. Venkatraghavan are likely to accompany Harbhajan to England, it is learnt. |
Five countries quit Asiad events BANGKOK, Oct 27 (Reuters) Several countries have withdrawn from events in Decembers Asian Games, officials of host country Thailand said today. General Jaruek Areerajakaran, vice-president of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and vice-chairman of the committee organising this years Asian Games in Bangkok, said he wanted stricter penalties for member states withdrawing abruptly from events. "I plan to propose to the OCA at its general assembly in Bangkok in December to set rules, regulations and penalties to deter member countries from withdrawing suddenly from events as it damages the host country," he said. "At this stage all we can do is to appeal to the OCA and other members not to make further withdrawals and hope no more will before the November 6 deadline," Jaruek said. Jaruek, said Cambodia and North Korea had pulled out of mens basketball, Uzbekistan from womens basketball and mens hockey, Oman from mens handball and Bangladesh from mens football, handball and volleyball. Jaruek said that before the withdrawals, 11,048 athletes and officials from 41 of 43 member countries had applied to take part in the December 6-20 Games. November 6 is the deadline for entries. Afghanistan and Palestine have still not applied to participate. Jaruek said he sympathised with member countries which had to withdraw due to political and economic hardship and said that despite the withdrawals the Games would still be the largest ever staged. Only 34 countries took part in the last Asian Games in Hiroshima, he said. Responding to reports that Afghan religious officials had urged Asian Games organisers to change laws banning beards in boxing, he said this was something for the International Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) to decide, not the Games' organisers. "Member countries
should make their requests to the IABF, he said. |
Gascoigne promises to stop drinking MIDDLESBROUGH (England), Oct 27 (AP) Troubled midfielder Paul Gascoigne has rejoined Middlesbrough on Monday, just 16 days after checking into a clinic for treatment of stress, depression and alcohol problems. Appearing at a news conference alongside manager Bryan Robson, the former England star said he would stop drinking and try to cope better with the off-the-field pressures that have burdened him throughout his career. The 31-year-old "Gazza," one of the most scrutinised personalities in Britain, was admitted to the rehabilitation clinic after a series of drunken incidents that were widely-reported in British newspapers. "It wasnt just the drinking," he said yesterday. "It was everything. Depressed. Stress. ... I thought it would be in the best interest that I get away. I went to the hospital where I could sort everything out. I feel better for it." Asked whether the treatment included admitting he was an alcoholic, Gascoigne said, "Im not going to go into that." However, he did say, "I have decided to stop drinking. It is important to keep off the drink." Asked whether he was a changed man, he said: "Ill let you decide that." When Gascoigne was admitted to the clinic, there was speculation he could be in treatment for up to six months. Many were surprised that he was returning to the club after just two weeks. However, Robson said the doctors who treated Gascoigne felt he was ready to rejoin the club while continuing his treatment. Robson said Gascoigne
would return to the hospital "a couple of days a
week" for ongoing treatment for the next month. |
Anand held to draw again TILBURG (HOLLAND), Oct 27 (PTI) Indias Viswanathan Anand was held to an exciting draw in 46 moves by Bulgarian Veselin Topalov in the fourth round of the third Fontys International Grandmasters Chess Tournament here yesterday. Anand leads the 12-man field with three points with seven more rounds to go, while Topalov, Loek Van Wely (Holland) and Matthew Sadler (England) are joint second on 2.5 points. Today is a rest day. Playing white, Anand took on Topalovs Sicilian defence with an aggressive English attack, aiming for a win. Topalov countered with great gusto and had the edge at times. After Anand made a risky exchange of his rook for two minor pieces, Topalov reacted sharply to force a draw. In the only result of the day, Sadler scored his first win over compatriot Michael Adams in five years, shocking him in 41 moves. All the other games were drawn. |
Flying start by Parnita CHANDIGARH, Oct 27 It was 18-year-old Parnita Garewal all the way. This 18-plus Chandigarh girl got off to a flying start returning a sub par round of 71 on the opening day of the sixth Punjab Open Amateur Ladies Golf Championship here today. The top-seeded lady golfer was far ahead of the challengers from outside. And her nearest rival was another teenaged Chandigarh girl, Irina Brar. Irina who turns 15 tomorrow, had a plus-two card of 74. Parnita fired birdies on the seventh, eighth, 13th and 14th holes. But then she dropped a stroke each on the fourth, fifth and 15th holes for the 71 card. Irina could not have asked for a better gift on the eve of her birthday. Pitted against seasoned lady golfers like Nonita Lall Qureshi, Urvashi Sethi Sodhi, Shruti Khanna, she kept her cool to return a card of 74. She had birdies on the 11th and 14th holes. This four-under handicap player thus gets a net score of 68. This puts her clearly in the lead for the Silver Salver net. Guneet Raikhy also had a commendable round of 78. She thus shared the third position with Nonita Lall Qureshi. Urvashi Sethi Sodhi and Shruti Khanna followed one stroke behind. Mrs Serla Grewal, Trustee of The Tribune Trust, teed off the tournament in the morning. |

Swimmers selection on what grounds? NEW DELHI, Oct 27 Indias swimming colours for the December Asian Games in Bangkok may be bestowed upon some who do not remotely deserve them, if other reasons besides merits and achievements are the criteria for selection to the national team. More than 12 aspirants are said to have been recommended by the Swimming Federation of India (SFI) after a short camp and make-belief trials at the Talkatora pool. The electronic (touch-pad) system was in operation but it was so deftly synchronised that most of the participants got an advantage of about two seconds. Despite this alleged manipulation, which has been common in the country for years, some did not attain the qualifying yardstick which was third place of the last Asian Games. Yet, two men swimmers, two men divers and nine women swimmers have been recommended for clearance by the SFI to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry, a government-unit of virtual no importance at present. The prospective candidates are: men: Sebastian Xavier and Sandeep Kackar. Men divers: Umesh Prasad and G Prem Kumar. Women swimmers: Nisha Millet, Reshma Millet, Richa Misra, Abhinaya Shakti, Meghana Narayan, Mayura Kumar, Sidoor Thakkar, Shikha Tandon, Shruti Jhawar. If performance is the guiding principle, Xavier and Nisha select themselves. They deserve to be on starting blocs in Bangkok. There are a couple of young and promising swimmers who should be sent to gain experience. But there are at least four who are being strongly recommended not because of their ability but because of other considerations. In the Atlanta Olympic Games, Sangeeta Rani Puri was cleared by the IOA through SFI. A virtual flying bird, she wore Indias blazer and disappeared into the American skies. There was no justification whatsoever for her participation on behalf of India. There were "reasons" for her clearance. In her place, any youngster, like, Nisha or Meghana or Abhijit could have been sent to gain the much-needed experience. The general standard of swimming at sub-junior and junior level is much higher than that of athletics in the country. But sadly SFIs actions are suspect because its activities are remotely and shrewdly controlled and monitored by someone other than the bona fide office-bearer of the national body. In the recent Asia Pacific
Age-Group competition, more than two dozens were cleared
by the government. Most of them performed utterly poorly.
Judging from their performance there, the IOA in
particular and the government in general should examine
facts and figures judiciously so that Indian participants
do not make a laughing stock of themselves in Bangkok. In the end, there is an urgent need to probe into the affair of Sangeeta Rani Puris participation in the last Olympics. Merely bearing an Indian
name does not entitle a person to represent India.
Nationalistic fervour is also needed. |
