ABOHAR

Truck intercepted: The Sadar police has intercepted a truck (PIM-2595) near Kulaar village on the Defence Road which had entered Punjab from the Rajasthan border and seized one quintal of poppy husk. Three persons, Mohan Chand, P.S. Sahnewal (Ludhiana), Jasbir Kumar, his wife Krishna Devi, both residents of Kingra Chowala and P.S. Bhogpur (Jalandhar) were booked under Sections 15, 61 and 85, NDPS Act.
24-hour bandh: Traders have decided to observe a 24-hour bandh here on Wednesday in protest against the scheduled auction of octroi posts. The auction, fixed for the third time, is to be held at Ferozepore. The traders, at a meeting held at Geeta Temple here on Monday, resolved to socially boycott the contractors. The shopkeepers said they would wear black badges and go to Ferozepore to disturb the auction process.
Shops catch fire: The temporary projections on the shops located at the bus stand market here caught fire on Monday due to sparks coming from loose electricity supply wires. The loss was yet to be assessed. The shopkeepers claimed that they had extinguished the fire before the arrival of fire tenders.
Market committee: The newly appointed office-bearers of the local market committee took charge on Monday amid protests from both block units of the SAD here. The joint meeting of the two SAD units was presided over by Mr Sukhminder Singh, President, urban unit. According to a press note, the meeting was attended by the other office-bearers, sarpanches and members of the Panchayat Samiti and Municipal Council.

AMRITSAR

Prohibited: The District Magistrate, Mr Narinderjit Singh, has prohibited the use of the word "Press" on the vehicles of non-accredited journalists or others in the district.

FATEHGARH SAHIB

Focal points: The Punjab Government has sanctioned 10 rural industrial focal points for the district. In the current session, five focal points at Paheri, Ferozpur, Ranwan Badali, Ala Singh and Khare will be developed, according to Mr T.R. Sarangal, Deputy Commissioner. He was presiding over a meeting where he said all units that would fall within 0.5 km of these focal points would be provided with all facilities.

HOSHIARPUR

Charge taken: Mr Amarjit SIngh Chohan, who was recently nominated Chairman of the local market committee took charge along with his new team on Monday.
Balmiki Jayanti: A kirtan darbar was organised by the Punjab Dalit Sangharsh Samiti to celebrate Maharshi Balmiki Jayanti at Roshan grounds here on Sunday. Free langar was served on the occasion.

KHARAR

Hepatitis-B camp: As many as 628 persons, including children, were immunised against hepatitis-B at a vaccination camp organised by the local Rotary Club and the Civil Hospital here at Khalsa Senior Secondary School on Sunday. The camp was inaugurated by Mr Avtar Chand Sharma, SDM.
Science fair: Two science models made by students of Government High School, Brahimna di Bassian (Kharar) got the first prize at a science fair held at Ropar from October 21 to 23.

NAWANSHAHR

Immunisation centres: A meeting of officials of different departments and NGOs was held here on Monday under the chairmanship of Dr Roshan Sunkaria, Deputy Commissioner, to review arrangements for the ensuing pulse-polio drive. Dr S.M. Singh Sidhu, District Family Welfare Officer, said 520 immunisation centres, including 21 mobile ones, would be set up.

PATIALA

Yoga camp: A seven-day free yoga training and character building camp was organised by DAV Public School here. Dr Kundan Lal and Mr Vir Vant Shastri gave advise to the trainees at the camp.
Elected: The Punjab Pensioners, Welfare Association at a meeting has elected Mr Harbans Singh Sodhi as its convener. Other ad hoc members of the executive body were also elected.
Eye camp: A free eye check-up camp was organised by the Bhagwan Shri Vishwakarma Mandi Committee, Sanaur, and the State Bank of Patiala (Sanaur branch). Nearly 910 patients were examined and 78 eye operations were performed.
Brahmin Sabha: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Brahmin Sabha here: President — Mr Shiv Kumar Sharma; and Secretary — Mr Brahm Parkash Sharma.
Assistance: The State Bank of Patiala here has decided to provide assistance to farmers whose crops have been damaged by rain. It has offered to convert crop loans of the farmers into term loans. It has also decided to rephase and reschedule tractor loan instalments.
Punjabi week: The Language Department, Punjab, will observe a Punjabi week here at the Bhasha Bhavan from November 1 to 7. During the week a book exhibition will be held from November 3 to 7, according to Mr Madan Lal Hasija, Director, Language Department, Punjab.
Urged: The Punjab Mazdoor Dal, the Punjab State Services Federation and the Punjab State Electricity Board Employees Federation have decided to meet the Punjab Chief Minister and the Finance Minister regarding the release of bonus and the DA slab.
Association: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Punjab Geographers Association here; Founder President — Prof G.B. Singh; President — Prof H.S. Mangat; Vice-Presidents — Dr D.S. Mankoo and Prof B.S. Mann; General Secretary — Mr Dharam Singh; and Finance Secretary — Prof Jasbir Singh.

HISAR

Arya Samaj: Mr Hari Singh Saini, a former minister, has been elected President and Mr Zile Singh Arya as Secretary of the local unit of the Arya Samaj. The elections were held on Sunday.

REWARI

Competition: Mr Anand Saini will lead the men's team while Ms Dipti will lead the women's team of this district at the Haryana State Yoga Competitions to be held at Faridabad from Wednesday.
Camp:
As many as 151 mentally retarded children were examined by a five-member team of specialists from Sir Gangaram Hospital, Delhi, at a two-day camp which concluded here on Sunday. The camp was organised by Lala Thakar Das Charitable Trust.
Yoga competition:
Mr Ajay Yadav and Ms Radha Verma stood first among men and women, respectively, at the district Yoga competitions held at DAV Public School here on Friday.

ROHTAK

Abducted: A 17-year-old girl has allegedly been abducted by a youth of Chunnipura locality here. According to a complaint lodged by the father of the girl, his daughter was abducted by a neighbour on October 16. A case has been registered under Section 363 and 366 of the IPC.

SIRSA

Liquor pouches: The police here has arrested Jagdish of Darba village and Harbans of Shahpur Begu village under the Excise Act and recovered 950 liquor pouches from them. This was stated by Mr B.S. Sandhu, Senior Superintendent of Police, on Tuesday.
Poppy husk seized: Kala Singh Nikka and Jagdev Singh, alias Joga, of Takhatmal village in the district were arrested under the NDPS Act by the police here on Monday. Nearly 12.5 kg of poppy husk was seized from them which was being taken on a scooter.
Arrested: Two notorious persons Satpal, alias Pannu, and Mahavir Singh of Rampura Bishnoian village in the district were arrested by the Sadar police, Dabwali, on Monday. Some ornaments, cash and other domestic articles were recovered from their possession.
Dowry case: The police has registered a case against Swaran Singh of Suhanwala village, his brother, Major Singh, his father, Swaran Singh, and sisters, Mandheer Kaur and Desho Kaur, for allegedly harassing Charanjit Kaur, wife of Swaran Singh, for dowry.

SONEPAT

Two arrested: The Sadar police here on Tuesday arrested Ashok of Mundlana village and Arun Tyagi of Rishi Nagar in connection with the murder of Dharminder of Dewru village, whose body was found floating in the Western Yamuna Canal near Barwasni village on October 9. The third suspect has been identified as Siri Om of Baroli village.
Smuggling bid: The police here foiled an attempt to smuggle 28 cows from Haryana to Uttar Pradesh on Monday. According to official sources, the police seized two trucks carrying these cows near Garh Mirakhpur village but the drivers and cleaners managed to escape. A case has been registered.

YAMUNANAGAR

Run over: Baldev Raj (50), an employee of the Haryana Roadways depot here was crushed to death by a bus on Monday. A case has been registered.top

BILASPUR

Cases disposed of: The Subdivisional Magistrate, Mr B.L. Raghav, presided over a subdivisional-level Shikayat Nivaran Divas held at Buhad village on Sunday. As many as 201 cases were disposed of.

CHAMBA

Bridge: A bailey bridge will be constructed at Gehra on the Chamba Bharmour highway in place of an old concrete bridge, which was damaged by a flash flood in Gehra Nala during last week's rain. This was stated by Mr Sanjay Murti, Deputy Commissioner, on Monday. He said efforts were being made to construct the bridge within 10 days.

JWALAMUKHI

Body found: A newly wedded woman was found dead on Tuesday under mysterious circumstances at Kuhna village near here. According to police sources, she belonged to Bara village in Hamirpur and had come to this village to meet Vinod Kumar. He has been arrested on the dying statement of the woman under Section 302, IPC.top
