On a peace mission
by Pradeep Sharma
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Oct 21 — Cutting across religious and linguistic barriers, a group of five dedicated persons from the South are out on a world tour to promote peace and universal brotherhood.

Under the banner of the Multi-Religious World Peace Mission, the team, headed by a sales executive, Mr B.V. Narayana, and comprising Mr A. Henry Edwin, S. Nazir Ahmed, B. K. Vedhamurthy and Aajaz Ahmed, is now in the city to mobilise support for its main aim:to promote peace and religious tolerance in the world. They are moving to different places in one "modified" motor cycle and one ordinary one.

During an informal chat with this correspondent at the UT Guest House here tonight, the leader of the team — Mr Narayana — said that the tour started on May 31 from Bangalore and would culminate in February next year after covering a major portion of the country and 60,000 km covering 30 countries, including major parts of the Gulf, Europe and Central America.

Mr Narayana, who had already completed a world tour covering 59 nations and 59,000 km in 1979, said God was one though we might call him by different names."We want to bridge the differences of community and religion so that different sections of society live in harmony and peace," he said adding that this was the only way by which the country could progress.

With that end in view the mission was working towards the construction of a "multi-religious prayer hall" in Bangalore where the people belonging to different faiths could worship and participate in festivals of the people belonging to other religions.

Another member of the team, Mr Ahmed, a businessman, said by doing something practical, the group, whose members belonged to three major religions of the country wanted to drive home the point that if they could work together, why not the people of the world live in tranquility.

Claiming good response from the public for their noble cause, team members said though they faced some financial difficulties at times but somehow they managed it with the help of sponsorship from Air India and financial assistance from other agencies, including state governments.

Mr Narayana added that though they wanted a Sikh to be part of the team yet they could not get one from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. He hoped that team could find some Good Samaritan from this part of the country. ...Top
