Nikhil Chopra replaces Harbhajan

AHMEDABAD, Oct 18 (PTI) — National cricket selectors today dropped a bombshell by omitting off-spinner Harbhajan Singh from the 14-member squad for the nine-nation Wills International Cup to be played in Dhaka from October 24 to November 1, following a directive from the International Cricket Council (ICC) over the youngster's "suspect" bowling action.

Cricket board secretary Jaywant Lele told reporters after the meeting that the board had received a letter on October 16 from the ICC asking that the 19-year-old Punjab bowler be left out of the national teams till he undergoes "corrective action".

The ICC's letter was written on the basis of the findings of the world cricket-governing body's "throwing committee" chaired by West Indian Clyde Walcott, after it reviewed video footages of the bowler's action following adverse reports about it by ICC match referees Peter Van Der Merwe of South Africa and Ranjan Madugalle of Sri Lanka.

Harbhajan's place in the squad was taken up by Delhi off-spinner Nikhil Chopra which was the lone surprise selection.

Team: Mohd Azharuddin (capt), Ajay Jadeja (vice-capt), Sachin Tendulkar, Saurav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Robin Singh, Nayan Mongia, Javagal Srinath, Anil Kumble, Ajit Agarkar, Sunil Joshi, Venkatesh Prasad, VVS Laxman and Nikhil Chopra.

India take on Australia in their opening match on October 28 in the nine-nation knock-out tournament.

If India lose to Australia then the selection committee meeting would again be convened to pick the team for the Sharjah tri-nation Coca Cola Cup tournament. Otherwise the same team would proceed to Sharjah", Lele announced.

The Sharjah tournament is to be held from November 6 to 13, he added.

On the issue of Harbhajan Singh's "suspect action", the second Indian off-spinner to come under the ICC's throwing committee's scrutiny after Rajesh Chauhan in the last two years, Lele said the board had asked ICC how to go about taking remedial measures for correcting the Punjab bowler's delivery style.

"We have asked ICC whether to follow the method adopted for Chauhan, of sending the bowler to an ICC-nominated coach in London, or ask Harbhajan's action be corrected by our own Erapalli Prasanna or Srinivas Venkatraghavan", Lele added.

Chauhan, too, had been omitted from the Indian squad following ICC's query over his action. He was later sent to England accompanied by Prasanna to have his action corrected under the supervision of former England off-spinner Fred Titmus only to go out of national reckoning since then.

Van Der Merwe was match referee for India's home series against Australia and the subsequent triangular series also featuring Zimbabwe at home while Madugalle was the match referee for the May home triangular featuring India, Kenya and Bangladesh.

Selection committee chairman Ajit Wadekar explained the rationale behind naming the team only for the Wills Cup by saying that the tracks in Dhaka and Sharjah may be totally different and the selectors needed the chance to make changes, if necessary, for the latter tournament.

"The requirements may be different in Sharjah. Last time we found that the wickets in Dhaka offered turn in the afternoons. We may not come across similar tracks in Sharjah", Wadekar said.

Wadekar said Harbhajan can still be our best bowler if he took corrective action. About the preference of Karnataka left-arm spinner Sunil Joshi over the claims of Delhi's Rahul Sanghvi, the chairman pointed out that Joshi was bowing very well and was also scoring runs.

"Sanghvi's form has dipped a bit and Joshi has been getting wickets and runs. We need all-rounders in view of the World Cup", he added.

Obviously Chopra's inclusion has been prompted by his show in the Irani Cup at Bangalore for the Rest of India, where he got a few wickets and also scored some runs down the order to become the replacement for Harbhajan.

About Venkatesh Prasad's choice over Debashish Mohanty Wadekar felt the former's slow leg-cutters can prove to be handy on the slow tracks expected at Dhaka. He also said Rahul Dravid's scroring rate has improved. "He keeps the scoreboard moving and that is most important", he added.

Amay Khurasia, Hrishikesh Kanitkar, Saba Karim, Amol Muzumdar and Mohanty were the other players who were considered for selection, he said.

Pak-Aussie Test heads for draw

PESHAWAR, Oct 18 (Reuters) — Ijaz Ahmed completed his Test best of 155 for Pakistan today as the high-scoring second Test against Australia headed for a draw.

Pakistan declared their first innings at 580 for nine in response to Australia's 599 for four declared and the touring team were 21 for nought — leading overall by 40 — at the close on the fourth day.

Out-of-form Ijaz resumed at 125 and went on to make 155, his highest score in his 47th Test which beat his previous best of 151, made against the West Indies last year.

Ijaz was finally out, cutting leg-spinner Stuart MacGill to be caught at the wicket by Ian Healy, having struck 24 fours in an innings of 386 minutes and 279 balls.

He shared a 115-run third wicket stand in 133 minutes with Inzamam-ul-Haq, who missed a century by three runs.

Once Pakistan had avoided the follow on at 400, runs came easily as the Australian bowlers struggled on a flat pitch.

From an overnight 329 for two, Pakistan carried their total to 410 at lunch while losing only the wicket of Ijaz.

It was during the second session that Australia had some success, picking up three wickets as 91 were added.

From 501 for six at tea, Pakistan went past their highest total against Australia in Pakistan — 537 made at Rawalpindi in 1994-95 — as Mushtaq Ahmed and Azhar Mahmood added 50 for the eighth wicket in only 75 balls.

The batting of Mushtaq won all the applause late in the day. He hit a tiring Mark Waugh for a massive straight six and played some handsome shots to remain unbeaten with 48, containing one six and six fours.

Azhar Mahmood made 26 before falling to McGrath, mistiming a pull shot to Justin Langer at cover, and with Mohammad Zahid leg before to Damien Fleming, the declaration came.

Australia, 1-0 up in the three-Test encounter, are seeking their first series win in Pakistan in 39 years.

Woodies beat Paes-Bhupathi pair

SINGAPORE, Oct 18 (AP) — Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi lost to world No. 1 Australian pair of Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde 2-6, 3-6, in the final of the Singapore Open tennis tournament here today.

The world No. 3 Indian duo, who had defeated the Australians for the first time in their previous four meetings in the Shanghai Open final last Monday, could not repeat their performance today.

Paes and Bhupathi had entered the doubles final defeating Andrei Pavel (Romania) and Sargis Sargsian (Armenia) 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 in the semifinal yesterday.

DPA adds: Marcelo Rios displaced Pat Rafter as No 2 in the world tennis rankings after taking the title at the $ 7,00,000 Heineken Singapore Open 6-4, 6-2 over Australian Mark Woodforde, earlier today.

Rios, who has already reached the No. 1 position twice this year, will move in behind Pete Sampras on tomorrow's computer list with five weeks to go until the end of the season.

Rios rolled to victory in 70 minutes over the 33-year-old veteran Woodforde, bidding to become the oldest man to ever win a title in the eight-year history of the ATP tour.

Kucera in final

VIENNA (Reuters): Weary world number one Pete Sampras edged out fellow American Todd Martin 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) to set up a final with Karol Kucera at the CA-Trophy on Saturday.

Kucera, the fifth seed and world number seven surprised Britain's big-serving Greg Rusdeski in a tight 7-6 (8-6) 6-4 battle in Vienna's stadthalle.

The 27-year-old American will not have an easy task against Kucera in the final.

The Slovak, who is coached by compatriot and former top player Miloslav Mecir, knocked Sampras out of the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.

After a slow start Kucera showed his usual composure and fought back from 4-1 down to take the first set to a tie-break which he won 8-6.

Kucera clinched his place in the final when he broke Rusdeski's service in the tenth game of the second set converting his first match point after an hour and 44 minutes.

Maradona banned "because of lab error"

MILAN, Oct 18 (AFP) — Diego Maradona has demanded justice following a report that his 15-month drugs ban in 1991 was due to a botched dope test.

The ban, following a positive test for cocaine after a league match for Napoli against Bari, marked the beginning of the end of his sensational career.

But a report by ANSA news agency claims that blunders with the equipment were made in March 1991 at the now discredited Acquo Acetosa Test Laboratory, currently at the centre of a drugs scandal in Italian soccer.

Not only Maradona’s sample, but also the supposedly "clean" control sample, which is only used for comparison purposes to make sure the equipment is set-up correctly, also showed traces of cocaine.

They were apparently the residues left from previous experiments on drugs which were carried out to help local police with a civil enquiry, completely outside the remit of sport and doping.

The revelation sparked immediate reactions from the Maradona camp.

"Perhaps now, after seven years, I’ll have justice, because my football has always been clean," Maradona told Naples Daily "Il Mattino."

"I will be following this story very carefully from now on, I want to understand, I want to know," he said.

Speaking of his cocaine addiction, he said: "It’s my problem and I have never denied it. But I was always clean when I went on a football field.

"I was certain that I would never give a positive test because I took private ones before every match. If those meant I could play without any worries, then I played. If they didn’t, I stayed at home."

Asked about these private tests, Maradona said: "I did them so as not to compromise my career and to not damage the club concerned: whether it was Barcelona, Napoli, Boca or even my national team."

Maradona, who was sent home after failing a dope test at the 1994 World Cup finals, said the private test before the match in March 1991 had been negative.

"That’s why I played that game and that’s why I have always had my suspicions about the tests carried out in Rome," he said. "I was clean. I was sure of it. So how did they find traces of cocaine?"

Napoli president Corrado Ferlaino said: "If this story is true, then it will be extremely disturbing for both me and Napoli football club... We strongly urge the authorities to shed the full light on this affair."

Maradona’s manager Guillermo Coppola went even further.

If Maradona was banned because of a mistake at the laboratory, "we will ask for damages," he said on television in Buenos Aires.

"We’ve known about these details for some time," Coppola said. "The machine which was used for the tests wasn’t working properly because it had been used for tests using cocaine."

"Diego said so during that year and now there’s the proof. All that remains now is to find out why Diego was banned for 15 months. It’s over to the lawyers because Diego suffered great pain and a great loss.

"Obviously we will ask for damages because the ban came right in the middle of his career, just after he had been runner-up in the World Cup and for him, it was like destroying his career."

However, the report drew a mixed answer from the head of the laboratory at the time, Alberto Giarrusso, who had been appointed that same month.

"One of the first things I did when I took over was to stop all these tests being carried out which had nothing to do with doping. As for the presence of cocaine (in the control sample), it certainly was there.

"But it didn’t have any effect on the positive outcome. All we did was clean the machine and then re-try with the control sample, which this time proved negative.

"Then we began with the analysis and that showed traces of cocaine." MILAN, Oct 18 (AFP) — Diego Maradona has demanded justice following a report that his 15-month drugs ban in 1991 was due to a botched dope test.

Warne ruled out of Shield opener

MELBOURNE, Oct 18 (AFP) — Shane Warne's hopes of bowling against England in the first cricket Ashes Test late next month dimmed today when he was omitted from Victoria's Sheffield Shield opener against Tasmania starting here on Wednesday.

The champion leg spinner has requested being considered only as a batsman while he continues his recovery from major shoulder surgery last May.

Warne bowled gently in a practice match last week but state cricket operations manager Shaun Graf said selectors had decided against risking him.

"Warne is not playing," Graf said today. "He was keen to play, but from a bowling point of view he has not done much."

The first Test against England, over whom Warne has had a psychological hold since 1993 Ashes tour of England, gets underway in Brisbane on November 20.

Victoria have only one more Shield game before the first Ashes Test.

Warne initially thought he may not play again for 12 months but Graf said he was close to returning to Shield cricket.

"He needs to get in the nets and do a bit of bowling and we'll see how he is from there," said Graf.

"We'll need to get a medical report to give him the all-clear."

Graf said Warne had recovered well from his short session in Brisbane but it had been decided that he was not yet up to playing Shield cricket.

Challenger Trophy shared

AHMEDABAD, Oct 18 (PTI) — The India ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams shared the NKP Salve Challenger Trophy when the final was abandoned without a ball being bowled toady because of unfit ground conditions following unseasonal rains.

It was bright and sunny this morning, in contrast to the last two days when it rained cats and dogs, but the ground conditions did not improve sufficiently to allow play.

The outfield was soggy and all the efforts of the ground staff to bring the conditions to normal failed.

The soft underfoot conditions over most parts of the outfield forced umpires K Hariharan and K Parthasarathy to finally call off the match at 6.30 p.m.

Two two captains, Venkatesh Prasad (deputising for the absent Ajay Jadeja who had checked out of the team hotel last night) of India ‘A’ and Anil Kumble of India ‘B’ understandably refused to play under the circumstances.

There was no play in the tournament after the opening day's truncated 40-over-a-side match on October 15 between India and India ‘A’.

The winners' purse of Rs 2.50 lakh and the runners-up award of Rs 1.20 lakh were also shared by the two finalists.

Vijay Kumar wins Aravalli crown
From Our Sports Reporter

NEW DELHI, Oct 18 — Stocky Vijay Kumar (Lucknow) defended Royal Challenge Aravalli Open title and pocketed Rs 99,960 of the Rs 6-lakh prize money at the 6,023-yard par-72 course here today.

Vijay, the Mahindra Player of the Year last season, showed that Aravalli’s challenging course was his happy hunting venue as he fired two-under 70 on the final day to aggregate five-under 283.

Unlike Vijay Kumar, who did not falter at all, Jaipur’s pro Vishal Singh could return a card of four-over 76 to secure the aggregate of 288. He got a cheque for Rs 66,660.

Shiv Prakash, five-over 293, was third while Ali Sher rallied brilliantly on the last three days to become joint fourth with Binod Pandey (Calcutta) with an aggregate of seven-over 295.

Vijay Kumar was in his usual belligerent mood. He had two birdies and a bogey on the first nine and another three birdies and two bogeys on the back nine for an aggregate of two-under 70.

"I played steadily as I had faith in myself," said Vijay Kumar, adding, "I am happy that I have opened my account on this difficult course". "Now the tide will turn and I will endeavour to achieve better results than seven wins last season".

It was a see-saw battle in the morning between Vijay Kumar and Vishal Singh. The former began with a bogey on the first but made up with a birdie on the third. Yet he was two strokes behind Vishal Singh after six holes.

Luck ran out for Vishal. He had two bogeys on the 7th and 8th. This saw him become edgy and continued to make more mistakes even when the going was simple. He blamed himself for missing a one-foot par on the 7th. "It was here that I passed on the initiative to Vijay Kumar," bemoaned Vishal.

Mohd Aslam (Patna) played a good round of two-under 70. But he had played indifferently on the first two days. He could return an aggregate of nine-over 297. He moved to the 9th place while Ali Sher was placed on the 5th.

Faridabad’s Mohd Yamin, 32, did surrender a part of prize money for disqualification for his failure to replace the marker on the 16th before making his putt. He himself pointed out his lapse yesterday.

Yamin’s sporting gesture saw him get a special cash prize of Rs 25,000 from the chief patron of the club S.K. Misra who went on record saying that the course would be tougher in the years to come. "Only when our pros play on rough, touch and difficult courses at home, there is a hope of their performing well abroad," Misra, himself a golfer, added.

Yamin is a nephew of renowned pro Ali Sher, twice Indian Open champion, 1991 and 1993, at the Delhi Golf Club. Since then the Indian Open has not been held at Delhi.

Final scores of leading player: Vijay Kumar 70,75,68,70 — 283, Vishal Singh 72,73,67,76 — 288, Shiv Prakash 76,71,72,74 — 293, Binod Pandey 73,76,73,73 — 295, Ali Sher 80,71,71,73 — 295, Sanjay Kumar 75,75,73,73 — 296, Devender Patel 74,74,73,76 — 297, Basad Ali 74,77,72,74 — 297, Mohd Aslam 80,72,75,70 — 297.

With leading amateurs playing elsewhere, the young amateurs had a chance to display their prowess. Jaiveer Singh (Delhi) won the title with a par-72 round on the final day. He tallied nine over 297. But he was as many as 39 strokes better-placed than Vijit Channa. Both are young and have a lot of promise.
