India crash to 61-run defeat HARARE, Oct 10 (PTI) The much-vaunted Indian batting failed to click today as the visitors slumped to a humiliating 61-run defeat with over a day to spare in the one-off Test against Zimbabwe at the Harare Sports Ground here today. The Indians have only themselves to blame for the defeat after their bowlers did a good job of restricting Zimbabwe to 293 in their second knock, after they resumed on 219 today. But the visiting batsmen made heavy weather of the 235-run victory target and were skittled out for 173 on a wicket which held no terrors. India, who began the test on a high note after winning the one-day series 2-1 and the three-day tour game, had complacency getting the better of them as they gave their worst showing. The babes of cricket scripted a big win inside four days despite conceding a 59-run first innings lead and setting an easily achievable winning target. Zimbabwe seized the initiative with early blows and had the top order Nayan Mongia (0), Navjot Singh Sidhu (0), Sachin Tendulkar (7) and skipper Mohd Azharuddin (7) back in the pavillion with the score reading 37 for four. Rahul Dravid (44) and Saurav Ganguly (36) the saviours in the first innings, tried to stem the rot but didnt much succeed as the hosts did not let the initiative slip and struck after the duo had added 67 runs for the fifth wicket. Robin Singh (12) and Anil Kumble, with an identical score, could not do much and by then the writing was on the wall. Javagal Srinath (23) and
Harbhajan Singh (15) resisted for a while raising 40 runs
for the tenth wicket but could not stop the inevitable. |
Rathore puts PCC in final CHANDIGARH, Oct 10 Test discard Vikram Rathore hit a brilliant 124 to enable Punjab Cricket Club to rout Oil and Natural Gas Commission, New Delhi, by nine wickets and enter the final of the fifth JP Atray Memorial Cricket tournament at the PCA stadium, SAS Nagar, today. The Punjab Cricket Club skipper Vikram Rathore won the toss and opted to field first. Sandeep Sharma and Manoj Mudgal opened for the ONGC team. Manoj was the first to go, trying to pull a short delivery from Harvinder Singh. Radhey Shyam was caught in the gully by Dinesh Mongia off the bowling of Lalit Kapoor. The next batsman Deepak Bhatnagar was trapped LBW by Harvinder Singh. The batsman could not open his account. The ONGC team were reduced to 21 for three at this stage. Sandeep Sharma was, however, not deterred by the fall of wickets as he continued to score runs at will from the other end. He scored a fluent 69 runs off 88 balls which included 10 hits to the fence. Skipper Rizwan Shamshad played the sheet-anchor role initially but later on opened up to score an impressive 71 runs of 86 balls. It was largely due to his knock and his partnership of 87 runs with Sanjay Verma (37) which enabled ONGC to score 228 runs in the allotted 50 overs. Left arm spinner Tejinder Singh of Punjab Cricket Club bowled an impressive spell to capture four wickets for 41 runs. The target was a modest one as it was a beautiful batting strip. Vikram Rathore proved it by playing a hurricane knock of 124 runs of 130 balls which included three towering sixes and nine hits to the fence. His knock made mockery of the total put up by the ONGC team. He toyed with the depleted bowling attack of the opponents who sorely missed the services of Chetan Sharma and Pardeep Jain. The brightest part of the innings came when Rathore struck three huge sixes, one each off Ravi Sehgal, Deepak Sharma and Rizwan Shamshad. Ravneet Ricky played well to score a patient unbeaten 75 off 117 balls. On Sunday, Bishnoi Cricket Club will face PUNCOM-XI . The match will began at 9 a.m. sharp. Brief scores: ONGC- 228 all out (Rizwan Shamshad 71, Sanjay Verma 37, Harvinder Singh 3 for 48, Tejinder Singh 4 for 41) Punjab Cricket Club - 232
for 1 (Ravneet Ricky 75 n.o., Vikram Rathore 124). |
Police aiding hooligans? JALANDHAR, Oct 10 (PTI) Top Sports Department officials here today claimed their lives were in danger from land mafia which was trying to usurp prime real estate of the local Hans Raj Stadium with senior police officers remaining mute spectators despite official complaints lodged with them. District Sports Officer Sudesh Kumar Viash and Deputy Director (Sports) Bhupinder Singh Bodhi said in spite of repeated complaints to Senior Superintendent of Police P.S. Gill that certain persons were indulging in hooliganism and damaging the stadium property,no action was taken. "Instead, the goons, who were duly identified, indulged in similar hooliganism again this morning in the presence of an additional SHO at Division number four," Sports Department officials said in a statement issued here. While SSP P.S. Gill was not available for comment, Additional Deputy Commissioner Praveen Kumar told PTI that he had not received any complaint in writing. Mr Kumar said sports department officials had contacted him yesterday following which he had asked them to ensure that the grounds were duly made available to the players. Mr Bodhi said while the
civil administration was cooperating with the Sports
Department, which owned the stadium land along with the
Municipal Corporation, the police was not doing anything
to check the hooliganism. |

Paul Lissek to coach Indian
hockey team PATIALA, Oct 10 German hockey legend Paul Lissek has agreed to come to India in November this year, on the invitation of the Indian Hockey Federation, to coach the national hockey team for the Asian Games scheduled to be held at Bangkok from December 6 to 20. Paul Lissek, who coached the Malaysian national hockey squad which won a silver medal in the recently concluded Commonwealth Games held at Kuala Lumpur, has been invited by the IHF to "iron out the deficiencies in the team which surfaced during the Commonwealth Games, primarily in the areas of penalty corner conversion and other related fields". The exact date of Lissek's arrival and the amount to be paid to him has not yet been disclosed. However, this is a temporary arrangement, as the chief coach of the national squad slated to participate in the Asian Games will be Maharaj Kaushik. A final decision as to whether to retain Lissek or not will be made after the conclusion of the Asian Games, according to a top IHF source. Meanwhile, taking a cue from the senior women's nationals held in channai recently where a plethora of one-sided matches had threatened to reduce the nationals to a farce, the IHF has now decided to change the traditional format of the senior men's national hockey championships. In an effort to stress upon the quality rather than the quantity of the national championships the number of the competing teams will be reduced. This will be done by weeding out non-performing teams based on the performance in the previous nationals. The new format envisaged a gradation system which would facilitate promotion and relegation of teams depending upon their performance into 'A' and 'B' divisions. This will also lessen the financial burden on the association hosting the event and also encourage performing teams while at the same time separating teams which just make up for the numbers. The IHF has also decided
to host the 1999 Asia Cup in the run up to the 2000
Sydney Olympics. The venue and the dates will be decided
later. |

Golden double for Uzma; Nitin wins NEW DELHI, Oct 10 (PTI) Top seed Uzma Khan of Andhra Pradesh completed a grand double, winning the womens and girls (under-18) titles in the DSCL Open National Tennis Championship here today. Uzma came back from a set and 3-1 down in the second to beat second-seeded Sai Jai Lakshmi of Tamil Nadu 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the womens final, but had little difficulty winning the girls crown two hours later. She whitewashed Delhi girl Shruti Dhawan 6-0, 6-0. Uzma hardly showed the form that earned her the national grasscourt title last year at Duliajan (Assam) in the first set. After taking the first two games, she was broken four times by Lakshmi, whose pin-point baseline shots and winners from the net seemed to leave Uzma clueless. In all there were 15 service breaks in the entire match. Lakshmi took three games in a row, breaking Uzma in the third, closing out the next with an ace and breaking the top seed again when she hit wide while down 15-40 in the fifth. Lakshmi, who dropped her serve in the next game, broke Uzma again in the seventh before taking the set on her opponents serve in the ninth, Uzma serving wide on set point. The next set saw both players breaking each others serve easily. Both also committed a number of unforced errors. It was in the sixth game of the second set that Uzma came into her own. After Lakshmi had gone up 0-15 with a winner, Uzma hit one down the line and another across the court to reach 30-15. Although Lakshmi drew level at 30-30, Uzma held serve, taking the game with two more winners to make it 3-3 in the second. Former Davis cupper Nitin
Kirtane won the national hardcourt title beating up and
coming youngster Vijay Kannan in straight sets in the
section today. Vijayendra Laad completed a double for Maharashtra on the side court when he clinched the boys (under-18) singles crown beating fourth seed Akshay Vishal Rao 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. Laad and Rao, both
baseliners, played great tennis with long rallies and
smashing returns enthralling the sparse crowd at the DLTA
deco-truf courts. Second seeded Kirtane aims to get back into Indias Davis Cup squad, which has now relegated to the Asia-Oceania zonal competition for 1999. Kannan started the match comfortably, breaking Kirtane in the fourth game of the first set to take 3-1 lead. But Kirtane replied back immediately in the fifth as Kannans killer instinct was found missing. Kirtane soon took over the
charge and stretched the ninth game on Kannans
service to duece before sending a backhand cross court
winner to earn decisive break for a 5-4 lead. |
Shane Warne not to testify MELBOURNE, Oct 10 (Reuters) Australian spin bowler Shane Warne has ruled out any possibility that he might appear at the inquiry into alleged match-fixing by Pakistan cricketers. Warne, told reporters in Australia yesterday that he had nothing to add to the statement he made four years ago when he, Mark Waugh and Tim May accused Pakistans Salim Malik of offering them a bribe to play poorly. "We signed affidavits and wrote down exactly what happened and we got called liars from a Pakistan judge", said Warne, who withdrew from Australias current tour to recover from shoulder surgery. "We told the right authorities, we told our manager, we told all those sort of people and we left it up to the authorities. May, who has retired from the game but now serves as president of the Australian Cricketers Association, has also refused to travel to Pakistan to testify. The former spinner said he was dismayed at the way the whole affair had been handled, blaming the International Cricket Council (ICC) for not taking a more active role. "I think its been handled poorly from the start. It should have been dealt with four years ago", May said. "We gave sworn statements in 1995 and we stick by every word of them". The manager of the Australian team that toured Pakistan in 1994, Col Egar, has also criticised the ICCs approach to the scandal. Egar said he informed ICC chief executive David Richards, who was in Pakistan at the time, as soon as he was told of the alleged offers but said he did not know if the matter was passed on to the Pakistani authorities. "I think at the time the ICC should have taken a hold on the whole allegations", Egar told Australian Radio. The criticism by the three
Australians followed a call by Australias top
cricket official for the ICC to take a more significant
role in the investigation. The judge who investigated the original charges exonerated the Pakistan players and accused the Australians of concocting the charges. However, an interim report released by the PCB three weeks ago recommended that Malik, Wasim Akram and Ijaz Ahmad should not be selected until the investigations were completed. Waugh, the only member of the original trio currently in Pakistan, repeated his allegations of bribery to the government-appointed judge investigating the charges. But the Australian camp
were angry at the way the hearing was conducted, with
Australian manager Steve Bernard describing it as an
"ambush". |
Indian cueists may boycott world meets MUMBAI, Oct 10 (PTI) Indian cueists, including world amateur snooker runner-up Ashok Shandilya and former Asian champion Yasin Merchant, have threatened to pull out of World and Asian meets in future "if the government fails to reimburse the money spent by them" on earlier trips. The cueists are also demanding that 40 per cent of the expenses be granted in advance for future world meets by the government or the Billiards and Snooker federation of India. Devendra Joshi, Dharmendra Lilly, B. Bhaskar, Rafat Habib, Alok Kumar and Manan Chandra are supporting the demand. Three-time world amateur billiards champion Michael Ferreira, who was the coach-cum-manager of the Indian team for the Asian Amateur Snooker Championship at Karachi recently, said here yesterday that four Indian cueists and the manager of the Indian team, Arvind Savur of Karnataka, were yet to be reimbursed the money they had spent during the Malta World Championships last October. "Railways Shandilya, who finished runner-up at Malta, B. Bhaskar of Karnataka, Prem Prakash of Tamil Nadu and Anand Rao of Bihar and the team manager are running from pillar to post to get back the promised sum of around Rs 1 lakh each", Ferreira said. "I dont know the reason for the delay in releasing the payments to these players. At a national monitoring committee meeting at Delhi last month, attended by Sports Minister Uma Bharti, I raised this point but was told to provide the details", Ferreira said. "I do not know how many times the BSFI will have to submit details and reminders before the players actually get paid", Ferreira said. "The government apathy is leading to a bad situation. The tours are cleared at government cost, but since the government does not hand over the money in time, the BSFI asks the players to shell out money since their contention is that the tours have been cleared at the governments cost", he said. "The Malta championship was held a year back and I think one year is too long a time to settle the account. Savur, who went as the manager of the team to Zimbabwe last year, is yet to receive Rs 60,000 which he spent during the trip", he said. It is also reliably learnt from BSFI sources that 80 per cent of the expenses during the Asian championship at Karachi, where Joshi and Shandilya formed the Indian team along with the coach-cum-manager Ferreira, has been reimbursed by the government recently. Ferreira also felt that the Indian government should take steps to finance the teams for future trips as the federation is not in a position to do so due to lack of funds. "The government
should also seriously take up the threat by players to
boycott all international events, except the Asian Games
at Bangkok where the teams are cleared through the Indian
Olympic Association, otherwise the games (snooker and
billiards) will suffer a big blow", he added. |
Ali Sher wins championship NEW DELHI, Oct 10 Ali Sher made the most of the home course as he bagged the Rs 5 lakh Le Meridien-Gokarna Pro-AM Golf Championship at the Delhi Golf Club (DGC) course here today. Staying calm and calculative even after making a double bogey on the 10th and another on the 12th. Ali Sher returned a level par card of 72 to get an aggregate of 286. This saw him prevail upon Shiv Prakash who got Rs 55,550. This was Ali Sher's seventh title at the home course. Basad Ali finished third with an aggregate of 290, while veteran Vikramjit Singh was tied with Jyoti Randhawa and Vivek Bhandari for the fourth position. It was fine going for Vikramjit Singh in his first tournament as a pro Judging from his form and determination, he could cause many surprises as the season progressed. Ali Sher and Shiv Prakash began the fourth round with two-under. Ali Sher made a birdie on the first but dropped a stroke on the second. Shiv Prakash could not come on terms with himself. Ali Sher made three birdies before the turn on the 4th, 5th and 8th. He finished first nine three-under and was five-under in aggregate half-way through. Shiv Prakash, in the meantime, whithered away and was as many as four strokes behind Ali Sher at this stage. Ali Sher earned a birdie on the 13th, while Shiv Prakash had one on the 14th. The difference stayed just one stroke. Shiv Prakash faltered on the 16th. He had a bogey. This gave a two stroke lead to Ali Sher. Then Shiv Prakash got another bogey and that sealed his fate. Expressing satisfaction at his win. Ali Sher said that he was indeed happy that he was playing better than what he was doing in the 1991 and 1993 when he won the Indian open. Sidhu's exclusion draws flak CHANDIGARH, Oct 10 The Sahibzada Cricket Club, SAS Nagar, at a meeting here today under the chairmanship of Mr Preet Inder Singh strongly condemned the exclusion of Navjot Singh Sidhu from the teams selected for the Challenger Trophy. "The five-member selection committee consisting of Ajit Wadekar (Chairman), Madan Lal, Shiv Lal Yadav, Ashok Malhotra and Anil Deshpande is once again going to play with the career of the great opening batsman. It is not the first time that Navjot Sidhu has been treated in such a harsh manner. It seems the selection committee is giving clear signals that they no longer need the services of the stylish opener from Punjab which is regarded as an 'untouchable' zone by the BCCI", Mr Preet Inder Singh said in a statement here today.
