Bowlers put Karnataka in command BANGALORE, Oct 3 (PTI) With its main batsmen back in the pavilion on a truncated day, Rest of India were struggling at 202 for seven in reply to Karnatakas first innings score of 326 on the third day of the Irani Trophy cricket match at Chinnaswamy Stadium here today. The visitors managed to add 102 runs today, losing four wickets in the process failing to negotiate spinner Vijay Bhardwaj who claimed two wickets for just 10 runs. Play was called off for the day at 3.55 p.m. due to rain and bad light. At 1.50 p.m. play was disrupted due to bad light and an early tea was taken. The sixth wicket partnership between M.S.K. Prasad and Nikhil Chopra was the lone good patch in the Rest batting and the duo went on to add 65 runs in 124 minutes. Earlier, Rohan Gavaskar (overnight 21) lost his concentration and was out following a thick outside edge carrying to the safe hands of first slip Sujith Somasunder off Joshi. Gavaskar had chipped in with 40 runs. Karnataka struck the first blow early in the game today. S. Sharath (26) was caught behind by Siraguppi off medium pacer Dodda Ganesh. Earlier, Sharath had a reprieve while on 20 but the dropped catch by Siraguppi off spinner Sunil Joshi was not costly as the batsman got out in the very next over. After the exit of Rohan Gavaskar with addition of just six runs for the fifth wicket, M.S.K. Prasad was joined by Nikhil Chopra. Chopra, an all rounder from Delhi, was the lone batsman to keep the Karnataka bowlers at bay. With neat footwork, Chopra played with equal felicity facing upto both the medium pacers and spinners, Sunil Joshi in particular, who claimed three wickets conceding 49 runs. Though he was cautious in his approach, Chopra was not hesitant to punish loose deliveries. Rest were 174 for 5 at lunch. Resuming after lunch, the Rest pair of Prasad and Chopra stuck to their wickets for sometime. Prasad, who could not contain his urgency though playing well, also fell cheaply. Spinner Vijay Bharadwaj, who came on to bowl in place of A. Katti, maintained a good line and length and was economical too, and succeeded in separating Prasad from Chopra. Playing defensively to Bharadwaj, Prasad offered a straight forward catch to Girish Rao at forward short leg. Prasad made 17. Bharadwaj struck once more dismissing Sivaramakrishnan, for zero, caught by Siraguppi. Captain Venkatesh Prasads decision to bring on Bharadwaj paid off as the spinner in his seven overs, of which five were maidens, took two wickets, at five runs a piece. For Karnataka, Dodda Ganesh (2/47) and Sunil Joshi (3/49) were the other wicket takers. When stumps were drawn earlier than the scheduled close due to rain and bad light, Chopra was at the crease with a well made 44 and giving him company was Mumbais Paras Mhambrey, yet to open his account. Kumble's ton puts India on top HARARE, Oct 3 (PTI) India took a commanding lead against Zimbabwe Board Presidents XI on the second day of the three-day match here today and it was particularly pleasing for Anil Kumble who hit a cracking unbeaten century. The small weekend crowd were treated to some entertaining batting launched by the peerless Sachin Tendulkar as a lead of 244 was built before the declaration was applied, 97 minutes after lunch. India declared its innings on 400 for five. The hosts had made 156 in their first innings. Kumble and wicketkeeper-batsman Nayan Mongia were associated in an unbroken 160-run partnership for the sixth wicket. And as soon as Kumble completed his ton, captain Ajay Jadeja called for declaration. Kumbles (100) came in 142 minutes off 126 balls including nine fours and one six. Mongia remained unbeaten on 70 with 10 boundaries. Earlier, Tendulkar came out to bat only in the second over of the day when hard-working Bryan Strang managed to find the edge of overnight batsman Jadejas bat and the chance was gleefully accepted by lone slip Trevor Penny. Tendulkar was merciless in his strokeplay. He was dominant as only he could be hitting fours and sixes by minutes. He started with smashing cover drives to Angus McKay and even as the bowlers were shuffled, left-arm spinner Raymond Price and Strang were hammered to embarrassment. The batting maestro raced to his 50 off only 27 balls and when he was dismissed for 70, made of 47 balls, he had hit 10 fours and four sixes. Before Tendulkar got going, India had lost the other overnight batsman Robin Singh (49), who failed to make any significant addition to his yesterdays total of 34. Tendulkar departed to a boundary-line catch off price but there was no end of agony for the Presidents boys. Nayan Mongia and Anil Kumble went remorselessly about their task, especially the latter who grew in confidence with each passing stroke, posting his 50 off 74 balls with seven fours and one six. Within an hour into afternoon, the declaration was coming, only Kumbles impending hundred kept it pending. It came to a stage when Mongia refused singles so that Kumble could rush to his hundred. Aussies in control of first Test RAWALPINDI, Oct 3 (Reuters) Australia took command of the first Test today, amassing 513 all out in reply to Pakistans 269 for a first innings lead of 244. The towering target was significantly built by Steve Waughs best-ever score against Pakistan of 157 as he shared a fifth-wicket partnership of 126 with Darren Lehmann. Waugh, who had resumed at 104, was out shortly after lunch. Lehmann displayed fine temperament to make 98 and missed his maiden Test hundred in only his second Test innings. His first Test was against India in 1997-98 when he made 52 at Bangalore Lehmann batted most of the day before being bowled by left-arm spinner Mohammad Hussain when he resumed after tea on 97. Five wickets fell after tea including that of Damien Fleming who was yorked by Wasim Akram for eight. Colin Miller was caught and bowled by spinner Mushtaq Ahmed for three. Stuart MacGill and Healy later on put on 41 useful runs for the ninth wicket as the lead mounted. MacGill was bowled by Saqlain Mushtaq for 21 but keeper Healy, who was dropped by Wasim Akram when on 78 off Mohammad Hussain, was the last man out when Mohammad Wasim took a simple catch at mid-wicket off Mohammad Hussain. Venus in final, Hingis pulls out MUNICH, Oct 3 (Reuters) American Venus Williams outpowered Wimbledon finalist Nathalie Tauziat of France to set up a final with Swiss Patty Schnyder at the Grand Slam Cup yesterday. Williams, who had lost to Tauziat in both their previous encounters, was in a class of her own this time, cracking down five aces and committing few unforced errors on her way to a comfortable 6-4 6-0 victory. She will now face Schnyder, who saw world number one Martina Hingis pull out with cramp at 5-5 in the deciding set of their all-Swiss semifinal. "There was not much point in going on and risking an injury," said Hingis, in danger of losing her number one spot to American Lindsay Davenport next week in Germany. Schnyder dropped the opening set 7-5 but took the second by the same margin before fighting back from 5-1 down in the third, saving a match point along the way. For the first time since the Grand Slam Cup started in 1990, women are also competing in the lucrative tournament for the best performers in the years four Grand Slams. Andre Agassi extended his impressive run in the mens tournament by beating Australian Open champion Petr Korda in yesterdays quarterfinals. Agassi, who had whitewashed Frenchman Cedric Pioline in his opening match, relied on blistering returns and powerful groundstrokes to tame Czech Korda 4-6 6-0 6-1. The former world number one, who received a wild card for the Munich indoor event, will now meet Karol Kucera for a place in tomorrows final. Slovakias Kucera, who beat Agassi in five sets in the fourth round of this years US Open, won a gripping battle with Croatian Goran Ivanisevic 5-7 6-4 8-6. Wimbledon finalist Ivanisevic, who won in Munich in 1995, mixed brilliant winners with clumsy unforced errors until he hit a forehand into the net on match point. "I didnt feel all that comfortable out there," said Kucera, who has lost only once to Ivanisevic and has now won their last four meetings. The other mens semifinal will be an intriguing clash of styles between Chilean baseliner Marcelo Rios, the world number three, and hard-hitting Australian Mark Philippoussis, the US Open runner-up. Hingis had won the first set 7-5, while Schnyder took the second, also 7-5, in the first showdown between the two Swiss teenagers. In the third, Hingis raced to a 5-1 lead and held a match point at 5-3, but she netted a backhand to waste it. She also questioned two calls that went against her as she dropped her serve. Schnyder held serve to come within a game of equalling the score. During the changeover, Hingis had her thighs massaged by a trainer. Back on court, she had trouble running as Schnyder hit the corners. Hingis quickly lost the game and with the score at 5-5, she retired, after two hours and 11 minutes. Hingis turned 18 on Wednesday, while Schnyder, ranked No. 9 in the world, is 19. The two helped Switzerland win the Fed Cup two weeks ago over Spain. Hingis said she also cramped in the Fed Cup against Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario. "I havent had enough time to recover since the US Open, but I also have to work on my fitness, she said. MALLORCA: Top seeded Carlos Moya of Spain defeated Thomas Schiessling on Friday to advance to the semifinals of the $ 475,000 Mallorca Open. Moya, who was a clear favourite and a local hero from this Mediterranean Spanish island, easily beat Schiessling of Austria 7-5, 6-4, in yesterdays quarterfinal. Moya will meet Fernando Vicente of Spain, who defeated fellow countryman Tomas Carbonell 5-7, 7-6 (8-6) and 6-4 in the second round. Vicente is ranked 78th in the world. Eighth-seeded Brazilian Gustavo Kuerten took 1 hour, 19 minutes to defeat Sergi Bruguera of Spain, 6-4, 6-4. Bruguera pulled off the biggest shock of the tournament when he beat fellow countryman Alex Corretja, ranked No. 7 in the world, on Thursday. But Bruguera could not repeat victory against Kuerten, to whom he already lost in the final of the French Open in 1997. Tomas Muster of Austria
beat Germanys Tommy Haas 3-6, 6-3 and 6-4, and will
play Kuerten in the semifinals today. |

In the first quarterfinal, Punjab Police, with several internationals in their ranks, trounced Punjab and Sind Bank Academy 5-1 while in the second match last year's runners-up Punjab and Sind Bank derailed Northern Railway 4-3 in what turned out to be a nail-biting contest. In the semifinals to be played tomorrow, Air-India will clash with Punjab Police while BPCL will lock horns with Punjab and Sind Bank. The final is slated for October 5. The Punjab Police-PSB Academy tie saw the Punjab cops enjoying a clear edge over the rivals. It was as early as in the fifth minute that Punjab Police gained the upper hand through a fine goal by Gursewak Singh off a penalty corner. Thereafter, the two sides had equal exchanges but in the 21st minute Punjab Police were awarded a penalty stroke when Gursewak's hit off a penalty corner struck Prabhdeep Singh's foot in the striking circle. Centre-forward Baljit Singh Dhillon calmly scooped the ball into the roof of the net making it 2-0. After the lemon break, the young PSB Academy lads fought back gallantly. In the 37th minute, Prabhdeep fed a measured pass to Baldeep who despatched the ball goalwards parallel to the goal-line. Ajitpal standing in an enviable position only had to tap the ball but unluckily he failed to do the needful. The third goal for Punjab Police came off a counter-attack when skipper Baljit Singh Dhillon set up a move for Daljit Singh. Daljit gave a quick pass to Gursewak who coolly placed the ball in the cage making it 3-0. Undeterred by the setback, PSB Academy continued to make forays and in the 43rd minute, Sandeep Singh raced down the middle before putting Jugandeep Singh in possession. Jugandeep gave an intelligent backpass to Mandip Singh whose reverse flick caught the Punjab Police custodian off guard. (1-3). Thereafter it was Punjab Police all the way. After missing an open goal in the 64th minute, Gursewak made amends made amends three minutes later when he found the target with a solo effort. (4-1). With hardly a minute to go for the final hooter, Punjab Police captain Baljit Singh Dhillon shot home from hand shaking distance after hoodwinking two defenders following a penalty corner to complete the rout (5-1). The last quarterfinal between Punjab and Sind Band and Northern Railway was a see-saw battle for supremacy which continued till the end. The bank men dominated the proceedings in the first half but could not achieve success. On the other hand, Northern Railway despite being under constant pressure, took the lead in the 23rd minute when Navsher Singh sounded the boards from the top of the 'D' (1-0). However, Punjab and Sind Bank were quick to restore parity six minutes later when Olympian Sanjeev Kumar found the target following a penalty corner (1-1). After the lemon break, Northern Railway once again forget ahead when Manmeet Singh capitalised on a penalty corner making it 2-1. In the 48th minute, the bank men again drew level when outside-left Ram Saran beat the NR custodian in a goalmouth scramble. It was in fact a move initiated by Bhupinder (jr) who had put Baljit Singh Chandi in possession (2-2). Six minutes later, Punjab and Sind Bank were again ahead when a powerful hit taken by centre-forward Parminder Singh from the 'D' top landed in the goalmouth (3-0). Shortly thereafter, Northern Railway equalised when centreforward Daud Suleman and A.P. Singh initiated a move and the latter sounded the boards with a hard hit from the 'D' (3-3). With hardly two minutes to go for the final hooter, Punjab and Sind Bank clinched the issue through centre-forward Parminder who found the target in a melee after skipper Baljit Singh Saini's hit was blocked by the NR goalkeeper (4-3). In the afternoon, a much improved Haryana will lock horns with Uttar Pradesh and then last years runner-up Bihar will play Mumbai in the quest for the semifinal berths. In the morning, UP inflicted a 6-1 (ht 4-1) defeat on hosts Tamil Nadu in a pool B match, much against the chagrin of local players, who twice threatened to walk out protesting against the award of a "stroke" and later claiming that one of the goals was scored from outside the circle.
