Karnataka restrict Rest of India

BANGALORE, Oct 2 (PTI) — Rest of India were restricted to 100 for three in their first innings after they wrapped up Karnataka for 326 earlier on the second day of the five-day Irani Trophy match at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here today.

Left-arm spinner Sunil Joshi and Dodda Ganesh took early wickets to tie down Rest of India to a paltry 100 runs losing three wickets.

The opening pair of the Rest team, Laxman and Jyoti Yadav, took some time to settle down before Laxman opened the scoreboard with a boundary off Venkatesh Prasad.

The two openers could not resist for long and attempted rash shots. Ganesh got the first breakthrough for his team when he got captain Laxman caught by Girish Rao at mid-wicket. Laxman’s 19 came in 47 minutes off 31 balls.

Yadav fell to Joshi’s bowling on 11 when he was caught at mid-off by Ganesh.

Just when Amol Muzumdar and Sarath looked threatening, Joshi sent Muzumdar (17) back to the pavilion through a neat catch taken at the slips by Prasad.

Rest of India, which lacked good partnership earlier in the day, found a saviour in Rohan Gavaskar (21 batting) who displayed some extraordinary shots including three boundaries and one six.

Kumble spins web around Board XI

HARARE, Oct 2 (PTI) — Anil Kumble took five wickets for 34 runs to skittle out a young Zimbabwe Board President’s XI for 156 before India nearly overhauled the score on the first day of their three-day match here today.

India, who rested most of their top batsmen, including Mohammed Azharuddin and Saurav Ganguly, finished the day on 138 for two in the possible 36 overs.

Navjot Singh Sidhu fell leg before to seamer Bryan Strang’s first ball for 19. Rahul Dravid followed suit after making 25 with the help of four boundaries. He missed the line of a Mark Vermulen delivery and was castled.

Ajay Jadeja then played a captain’s knock of 57 and was unbeaten at stumps along with Robin Singh (34).

Jadeja was in a belligerent mood and singled out first medium-pacer Angus McKay, whom he hit for two fours either side of the wicket and then lofted left-arm spinner Raymond Price for a straight six.

Jadeja’s 50 came off 74 balls with eight fours and a six.

Robin Singh also played a hurricane knock, scoring 34 off only 40 balls with the help of five fours and a six.

Earlier, the Zimbabwe side, who were 84 for three at one stage, collapsed dramatically after lunch, succumbing to the guiles of spinners Kumble, Harbhajan Singh (2/38) and Rahul Sanghvi (2/16).

The departure of Vermulen (46) just before lunch break was a big blow for the hosts. Vermulen, who has captained the Zimbabwe under-19 side, batted for 139 minutes facing 111 balls and hit six fours but his exit triggered a slide.

With Javagal Srinath, coming in for Saurav Ganguly who was rested in a late decision, going wicketless after six overs of searing pace, it was left to his statemate Kumble to make the breakthrough.

The Indian leg-spinner trapped D. Marillier leg before for eight when the total read 30. Sixteen runs later, D. Vijleon (12) departed well caught by Harbhajan at mid-off off Debashish Mohanty.

Vermulen and T. Modondo then took the score to 84 before Harbhajan had Modondo caught by Mohanty for 14.

Then Kumble struck again as Neil Johnson (21) and T. Penny (8) returned to the pavilion. Johnson was trapped plumb in front of the wicket while Penny was smartly taken at silly point by Dravid.

Left-arm spinner Rahul Sanghvi raised visions of a hat-trick when he packed off McKay (1) and price (0) off successive balls in the 65th over. But number 10 Bryan Strang safely negotiated the next ball.

However, Kumble sent back Strang (15), before he could bolster the innings, and Everton Matambanadzo (4).

The wicket, devoid of any pace or bounce, played easy but the inexperienced host batsmen, overawed by the visitors’ reputation, fell like nine pins.

Slater, Steve prop up Aussies

RAWALPINDI, Oct 2 (Reuters) — Centuries by Michael Slater and Steve Waugh rescued Australia after they had lost three early wickets on the second day of the first Test against Pakistan today.

Australia, reeling early on at 28 for three, were 237 for four at the close in reply to Pakistan’s first innings 269.

Slater, who hit 108, and Waugh, who ended the day on 104 not out, shared a fourth-wicket partnership of 198 runs in 246 minutes.

They came together in the morning session after pace bowler Wasim Akram had claimed the wickets of captain Mark Taylor and Justin Langer in successive deliveries and leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed had dismissed Mark Waugh for nought.

Slater was out playing a tired shot, caught at cover by Mohammad Wasim off left-arm spinner Mohammad Hussain after tea.

He hit 11 fours and a six off Mushtaq in his eighth Test century. His hundred came in 238 minutes and 205 balls and his innings lasted 298 minutes.

Waugh’s hundred, his 15th in Tests, came half an hour later in 256 minutes and 220 balls, with nine fours and a six off Saqlain Mushtaq.

The Pakistan bowlers did beat the bat on occasion but had no luck as Slater and Waugh mixed caution with aggression to thwart them.

"It was highly satisfying to make a hundred in the first Test against Pakistan," said a delighted Slater, whose last century was 219 against Sri Lanka in 1995-96 in Australia.

"It was tough but enjoyable," Waugh said.

Saeed Anwar and Mushtaq resumed the Pakistan innings in the morning at 253 for eight, having rescued their side yesterday with a record ninth-wicket stand for Pakistan in Tests against Australia.

But the last two wickets fell for only 16 more runs just 50 minutes into the morning session.

Opener Anwar, 132 overnight, was caught by Langer at short leg off leg-spinner Stuart MacGill for 145, having hit 12 four and batted for 386 minutes. The ninth-wicket stand was finally worth 120.

MacGill finished with five for 66, his second Test haul of five wickets since he made his debut earlier this year.

Davenport goes down to Tauziat

MUNICH, Oct 2 (AP) — In her first match since clinching the US Open and closing in on the No. 1 ranking, Lindsay Davenport stumbled yesterday at the Grand Slam Cup, losing in three sets to Nathalie Tauziat.

"It’s a good wake-up call for me,’’ Davenport said. "The first tournament in Europe, I need to play a lot better the next two tournaments.’’

Tauziat, the Wimbledon runner-up, rallied to win 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 despite 12 double-faults and 37 unforced errors.

Venus Williams made sure there will be at least one American in the semifinals of the 6.7 million dollars tournament when she beat French Open champion Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario 6-3, 6-2. She will next play Tauziat.

In a men’s quarterfinal, Mark Philippoussis, one of the biggest servers in the game, overcame Jonas Bjorkman, one of the best returners, 4-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-1.

Philippoussis, the US Open runner-up, served 13 aces and battled back from a break down in the second set to turn the match around.

Since losing to Tauziat in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon, Davenport had won four tournaments, also beating the French woman on the way to her US Open title earlier this month.

"I definitely felt a little bit rusty and definitely a bit sluggish,’’ said Davenport, who took a week off after the US Open.

I started hitting last week. I got in Monday, maybe a couple of days here would have helped,’’ she said.

"I think losing here today might even help me because it’s definitely going to make me practice harder the next few days,’’ Davenport said.

Davenport trails top-ranked Martina Hingis by only 26 points and she could be the new No. 1 after next week’s tournament in Filderstadt, Germany. She will also play in Zurich, Switzerland.

"I know it’s going to be very tough because I know Martina is going to play very well. I just hope I can play well, too,’’ Davenport said.

But ranking has never been a huge priority of mine, it’s never been a huge, huge obsession of mine. Whatever happens with the ranking happens. If it happens, I’ll be very happy, though.

"The one I wanted to win was the US Open,’’ Davenport said. After splitting the first two sets, both Davenport and Tauziat had trouble holding serve in the third.

Serving for the match at 5-4, Tauziat saw Davenport rip a backhand passing shot that made it 5-5.

But Davenport again dropped her serve, allowing Tauziat to serve for the match for the second time. Davenport saved one match point with a lob but Tauziat fired her sixth ace to advance.

"I had a chance to close the match earlier. I didn’t do it. I was lucky to finish at the end,’’ Tauziat said.

Williams, ranked no. 5, has won the last three of her five matches against Sanchez-Vicario. The American reached the semifinals of the US Open earlier this month by beating Sanchez-Vicario and made the quarterfinals in the other three Grand Slams.

Sanchez-Vicario won her fourth Grand Slam career title in Paris this summer and is ranked No. 4 in the world.

The tournament, which awards no ranking points, nominally brings together players with best records in the four Grand Slam events of the year — the Australian, French and US Open and Wimbledon.

But while only one of the year’s Grand Slam champions among the men is here Australian Open champion Petr Korda — the eight women included all the champions and all the top-ranked players except Monica Seles.

Three Grand Slam champions already have been eliminated — Davenport, Sanchez-Vicario and Jana Novotna. The Wimbledon champion was ousted on Wednesday by Patty Schnyder.

Hingis, the Australian Open champion, plays Schnyder, her Swiss teammate, in the other women’s semifinal.

BPCL trounce Chandigarh XI
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Oct 2 — Justifying their seeding in the last eight, star-studded Air-India, Mumbai, and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited stormed into the semifinals of the 28th All-India Gurmit Memorial Hockey Tournament with convincing victories in the quarterfinals at the Sector 42 hockey stadium here today.

While Air-India overpowered All-India Customs 5-2 after leading by a solitary goal at half time, BPCL trounced Chandigarh XI 6-3 in another high scoring tie.

Last year's semifinalists Punjab Police also kept alive their hopes of making it to the last four with a resounding 6-1 victory over Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala. They will now take on Punjab and Sind Bank Academy, Jalandhar, for deciding the semifinalists from the group tomorrow. In the last quarterfinal to be played tomorrow, Northern Railway and Punjab and Sind Bank will lock horns and the winners will meet BPCL in the semis.

Air-India boasting of several internationals who did national duty either in the Olympics or the Asian Games were definitely a superior side as compared to Customs. They displayed the coordination in every department. While the forwards, including Gaganajit, Olympian Darryl D'Souza and Edward Aranna functioned like a well-oiled machine moving up and down in tandem, the half line and defence lent valuable support.

It was as early as in the fourth minute that Air-India shot into the lead when outside-right Edward Aranna sent the ball towards Darryl D'Souza parallel to the goal-line. Darryl struck like lightning, tapping the ball into the goalmouth to make it 1-0.

After being at the receiving end for a considerable period, Customs launched a counter-attack through outside-right Suresh who advanced towards the 'D' menacingly. However, skipper Surinder Kundu of Air-India made a timely interception and dispossessed him of the ball.

On changing ends, Customs made serious attempts to wipe out the deficit in the 43rd minute, centre-forward, Dalit Singh's scoop off a penalty corner caught the Air-India custodian on the wrong foot but skipper Kundu made a goal-line save.

In the 46th minute Air-India made it 2-0 when Darryl D'Souza raced in like lightning with Gaganajit moving alongside and despatched an angular hit which the latter neatly deflected into the cage.

Six minutes later it was the turn of Customs to attack and they managed to pull one back when Kulwant Rai capitalised on a pass by Suresh to make it 1-2.

Air-India struck again in the 58th minute through Gaganajit who shot home after receiving a cross from Manoj Lokhandas (3-1).

Two minutes later, Gaganajit again set up a move for Edward Aranna who made no mistake in hitting past the goalkeeper (4-1).

Customs forced a penalty corner thereafter and managed of reduce the margin through outside-left Sunil (2-4).

However, Air-India replied with a counter-attack once again and made it 5-2 when Manoj Lokhandas capitalised on a pass by centre-half Davinder Kumar.

TOULOUSE (France): Junior Wimbledon champion Roger Federer pulled off his second sensational result at the Toulouse Open Tennis Tournament yesterday when he beat No 7 seed Richard Fromberg in straight sets.

Federer, who turned 17 in August, has now beaten two top 50 players in what is his first professional tournament.

In the first round, the young Swiss defeated France’s Guillaume Raoux, 6-2, 6-2.

Federer, who entered the Toulouse tournament with a world ranking of 878, began in outstanding form against Australia’s Fromberg, demonstrating speed around the court, powerful serves and accurate returns to take the opening set 6-1.

Fromberg held his own in the second set, but lost the tiebreak 7-5.

In the quarterfinal, Federer will face the winner of the second round contest between No 2 seed Jan Siemerink and Jerome Golmard.

Jeff Tarango crashed out in the second round, losing to Switzerland’s Marc Rosset in straight sets.

Tarango, the USA’s only entrant here, lost 6-3, 6-4.

Martin Sinner, seeded No 8, was a surprise loser to unseeded Frenchman Arnaud Clement, collapsing 7-1 in a third-set tiebreaker.

Clement’s countryman Stephane Huet also caused a shock, beating Armenia’s Sargis Sargsian 7-5, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3.

No 3 seed Thomas Johansson qualified for the last eight, beating Czech Daniel Vacek, 6-4, 6-3.

Chandigarh eves move into q-finals

CHENNAI, Oct 2 (PTI) — Mumbai became the first team to make the quarterfinals of the Bank of Baroda 49th Senior Women’s National Hockey Championship with a 3-0 (HT 1-0) win over Karnataka in a pool ‘F’ league match.

Karnataka, who needed only a draw to make the grade found its citadel breached in the eighth minute itself when Mumbai’s energetic centre forward Pakpi gave a tailormade pass to Paulina who scored.

Heavy showers then held up play for 15 minutes and when play started again, Karnataka found their goalkeeper Bindya failing to stop a feeble push from Paulina, thereby conceding another goal. This upset Karnataka’s coordination, and it came as no surprise when Pakpi reverse flicked a brilliant cross from the right to put the issue beyond doubt. Mumbai now meets Bihar in the knockout stage.

Chandigarh made the last eight from pool ‘C’ defeating Maharashtra 9-0 (HT 5-0). Chandigarh, who secured nine points with an all win record in the pool, will meet holders Indian Railways in the quarterfinals on Sunday.

Inside right Mamta scored five goals, including one off a stroke while centre forward Nishi was credited with three and centre-half Harpal Kaur one.

In a pool ‘E’ match in the morning, Punjab defeated Jammu and Kashmir 3-0 (HT 1-0). With a clash against Delhi tomorrow, Punjab looks nearer to making the quarterfinal berth as even a draw can take them to the knockout stage on better goal difference.

In the Punjab-Jammu and Kashmir match, Sneh Bala drew first blood for Punjab scoring off a penalty corner while Rajwinder and Sarabjita added to the score. Punjab won 3-0.

In inconsequential matches, Himachal Pradesh beat Bundelkhand 5-1 (HT 3-1) in pool "F". Santosh Kashyap (4) and Neeta netted for HP with Vibha reducing the margin for the losers.

Similarly Gujarat tasted victory over Andhra Pradesh 5-0 (HT 2-0) with goals from Jagrati (2) Shivani (2) and Poonam in pool "G" and Kerala had the same experience beating West Bengal 5-1 (1-0).

Arunthathi (3), Rejani and Subha were the scorers for Kerala with Rita netting the solitary goal for West Bengal.

From Our Sports Reporter

PATIALA, Oct 2 — After days of agonisingly lop-sided matches, the decks were cleared for the semifinals of the 23rd All-India Gurdarshan Memorial Football Tournament being played at Nabha, near here, today.

PSEB will square off with BSF, Jalandhar, and RCF, Kapurthala, will cross swords with Switchgear, Phagwara, for a place in the final.

In the first match of the day PSEB downed HSB Club, Nawanshahar, by the odd goal to three to book a berth in the last four.
