Youth festival: Hans Raj Mahila Mahavidyalya has won the overall trophy at the Guru Nanak Dev University Zonal Youth Festival (Women) which concluded here on Saturday. Kanya Mahavidyalya, Jalandhar, lifted the runners-up trophy while the Apeejay College of Fine Arts, Jalandhar, finished third.

ANANDPUR SAHIB

Counter for coins: The local branch of the State Bank of Patiala put up an exchange counter for coins on the occasion of the foundation-laying ceremony of the Khalsa Heritage Memorial Complex on Sunday. The bank also arranged a free eye check-up camp on the occasion.

BATALA

Medical camp: A free medical eye camp will be held at Maharaja Tulsi Dass Charitable Hospital, Sidh Baba Balak Nath Mandir, Hansli bridge, here on November 24 and 25. This was stated by Mr Satish Kumar, a trustee of the temple. Medicines free of cost will be provided to the poor.

KHANNA

Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the local Punjab Police Pensioners Welfare Association: Chairman — Mr Sher Singh Cheema; Vice-Chairmen — Mr Siri Chand, Mr Ram Sarup and Mr Paramjit Singh; General Secretary — Mr Krishan Kumar and Treasurer — cum-Joint Secretary — Mr Malkiat Singh.

LUDHIANA

Eye camp: A free eye check-up and operation camp was organised at Ved Mandir Charitable Eye Hospital here on Saturday. About 450 patients were examined and 30 operations conducted.
Protest week: The Marxist Communist Party of India will observe the first week of December as a protest week against the rising prices and communalism. A meeting of the central committee of the party was held at Vishakhapatnam recently and a call was given to all its units to participate in the campaign.
Office-bearers: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Punjab Subordinate Services Federation: President — Mr Swaran Singh; and General Secretaries — Mr Rajinder Gautam and Mr Satinderjit Singh Walia.

MALERKOTLA

De-addiction camp: A 10-day de-addiction camp being organised by the local police was inaugurated at the local Civil Hospital on Saturday. Medicines and food will be provided free of cost.
Road repair: Resentment prevails among people here against the substandard patch-work done by the municipal contractor on the road from Government College to Sirhandi Gate. Mr Hans Raj Gupta, President, Malerkotla Public Peace and Welfare Committee, in a letter to the Punjab Chief Minister has complained against the contractor.
Polio vaccines: As many as 11,000 children will be administered polio vaccines here on December 6, according to Dr V.P. Goyal, Chief Medical officer of the local Civil Hospital. He said two mobile vans would also be pressed into service.

NANGAL

Campaign: An awareness campaign against drug addiction was organised by the local unit of Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle on Saturday. Students from local schools marched through the town in a procession.
Committee income: The income of the local Municipal Council has increased by 32 per cent in this financial year as compared to the collection in the last financial year. This was stated by an Executive Officer by the council.

NAWANSHAHR

Nominated: Mr Resham Singh Thiara, Senior Vice-President of the district unit of the SAD, has been nominated as member of the District Planning and Development Board.
Lions Club: The following have been elected office-bearers of the local Lions Club ( Nawanshahr Doaba): president — Dr Harwant Singh Gill; vice-presidents — Dr K.S. Sodhi, Dr Sujinder Singh and Mr Parvesh Sareen; secretary — Mrs Harvinder Kaur Aulakh and treasurer — Mr H.L. Soni.
Death anniversary: Tributes were paid to comrade Gian Singh Sangha, a senior leader of the CPI (ML), who was gunned down by militants six years ago, to mark his death anniversary at Shahabpur village here on Friday.

PATIALA

Vaccination drive: As many as 35 mobile vans will be in operation to vaccinate children working in the industrial sector and the floating population during the pulse-polio drive in December and January. This was stated by the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Vishwajeet Khanna, here on Saturday.
Bal Vikas rally: The Patiala contingent, including 60 children of age group 8 to 13, has left for Puttaparthy in Andhra Pradesh to participate in the international Bal Vikas rally in week-long celebrations of Sri Sathya Sai Baba’s birthday falling on Monday.

SAMRALA

Mishap: Mr Gurdip Singh of Rattipur village was killed in an accident on Thursday and his relative, Mr Himmat Singh, injured seriously when their scooter dashed against a pole near Jaspalon.
Dental camp: A 15-day dental camp concluded here on Friday at the Civil Hospital. More than 2,200 persons, including school children, were examined.
Association: The following have been elected office-bearers of the local Punjab Pensioners Kalyan Sangathan: President — Mr Prem Sagar Sharma; Vice-President — Mr Naginder Singh Kang; Secretary — Mr Joginder Singh Josh; and Treasurer — Mr Balbir Singh.

Dentures provided: As many as 60 complete dentures were provided free of cost, to the poor and needy patients here during a dental health camp, according to Dr P.C. Gupta, CMO (Dental). The camp concluded on Friday.top

AIDS rally: More than 200 volunteers of NSS from Government College of Education, Sector 20, participated in an AIDS awareness rally here on Sunday. The rally was flagged off by Mrs Surinder Kaur Tangri, Principal of the college, from Government High School, Kajheri village.
Contest: A Lions peace poster contest with the topic "planting the seeds of peace" was organised at Tagore Theatre here today. Conducted by Leo Club, Chandigarh Plaza, it had a participation of 140 members of Marga's Global Kids from different schools.
Invited: Mr AD Nagpal, National Secretary of the Hind Majdoor Sabha has been invited to participate in a meeting of the working group for consumer electronic equipment sector at Selangor (Malaysia) to be held on November 25 and 26. The meeting is being organised by the International Metal Workers Federation to discuss globalisation, diversification and the Asian economic crisis.

Train derails: Atleast two children received minor injuries after a toy train derailed from its track at an amusement park near Ramgarh here today. A visitor who was at the amusement park at the time of the incident disclosed that the toy train carrying some children and their families was crossing an artificial bridge when one of its bogie derailed. The two children who received minor injuries were near the bridge when the train derailed. Despite best efforts the incharge of the amusement park could not be contacted.top

BHIWANI

Suicide: A 22-year-old housewife of the local Hanuman Dhani area allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison on Thursday. The police has registered a case.
Power theft: The Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam in a drive against the theft of electricity has registered FIRs against 755 establishments and persons of the 1,550 cases detected in the district. This was stated by the Deputy Commissioner, Mr K.C. Yadav.

GURGAON

Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Parent-Teacher Association of Government Senior Secondary School, Garhi Harsaru: Patron-in-Chief — Ms Kavita Gupta; President — Mr S.B.L. Jain; Vice-President — Mr Matadin Yadav; General Secretary — Mr J.P. Bhardwaj; and Treasurer — Mr Umang Kapoor.

HISAR

Arrested: The police has arrested four persons in connection with a dispute between two unions over the loading of vegetables at the subzi mandi, Hansi town, here on Saturday. A case has been registered under Sections 147, 140, 341, 323, 427 and 506 IPC.
Congress grass: A campaign to eradicate congress grass from the campus of Guru Jambheshwar University was launched on Saturday by the Environmental Awareness Society of the university.
Killed: One person was killed and two others were injured when a jeep in which they were travelling overturned near Choudhariwas village on the Hisar-Sirsa road on Friday. The deceased was identified as Dwarka Dass, a trader of Siwani.
Encroachments: The Hansi administration will soon launch a drive to remove encroachments in the city. Mr Ramesh Verma, Subdivisional Magistrate, has asked the shopkeepers to remove the encroachments within a week, failing which the administration would take stern action against the defaulters.

SIRSA

Integration week: A national integration week is being celebrated here from November 19 to 25 to promote national unity and amity. This was stated by Dr Avtar Singh, Deputy Commissioner.
Drive launched: A cleanliness drive has been launched here, and for this purpose the town has been divided into four zones. Dr Avtar Singh, Deputy Commissioner, has said the zones will be looked after by District Revenue Officers, City Magistrates, SDMs and Executive Engineers (Public Health).
Bribery: The State Vigilance Department arrested SDO S.N. Aggarwal and cashier Parhlad Singh of Haryana Vidyut Nigam on Thursday for allegedly taking bribe. The raid was conducted on a complaint of Mr Amar Singh of Kasumbi village.
Camp: As many as 70 eye operations free of cost were performed by a team of eye surgeons at a camp organised by the Baba Bihai Charitable Trust and the local Lions Club here on Friday. The camp was inaugurated by Dr Avtar Singh, Deputy Commissioner.
Case registered: The police here has registered a case under Section 408 of the IPC, against Ashok Kumar of Begu village on a complaint of the Superintendent of the examination centre at Satluj Public School here on Friday. It has been alleged that the accused disappeared from the centre with the answer sheet.
Booked: Three persons were arrested under the Gambling Act from various places of the city on Friday. Rs 2,700 were recovered from them. Mr B.S. Sandhu, Senior Superintendent of Police, said that Davender Kumar of Karamgarh village was also arrested under the Excise Act and 48 liquor pouches were recovered from him.

YAMUNANAGAR

Blood donation: A blood donation mela at Seth Jai Parkash Polytechnic, Damla was inaugurated by the SSP, Mr Sheel Madhur here on Friday. As many as 150 students, including villagers of Damla, donated blood.
Convocation: The convocation function of Mukand Lal National College was held here on Friday. Mr Prem Prashant, Secretary and Commissioner, Technical Education, Haryana, presided over the function. He exhorted the graduates who had been awarded degrees on the occasion to continue their quest for knowledge.
