AMRITSAR

Workshop: A workshop on " Empowerment of city authority and urban infrastructure financing" was inaugurated here on Friday by Mr N.K. Arora, Principal Secretary, Punjab Government. The workshop was organised by the Centre for Research in Rural and Industrial Development, Chandigarh, in collaboration with the National Institute of Urban Affairs, New Delhi.

FATEHGARH SAHIB

Order: Mr Harbhajan Singh Bhullar, District Education Officer (S), in a press release issued here on Friday has asked lecturers, teachers and vocational teachers who were working on 89 days' basis and were relieved on the order of the Punjab and Haryana High Court to report to his office on November 17 along with the relevant documents, according to the orders of the Punjab Government.

FAZILKA

No salary: As many as 100 teachers of the 50 newly established primary schools of Punjab have not been paid salaries since June. Mr Raj Kishore Kalra, spokesman of the Government Teachers Union, Punjab, has urged the State Government to release the salary immediately.

JALANDHAR

Refresher course: The Punjab Police Academy, Phillaur, organised its third refresher course on the fingerprint identification system. In the course which concluded on Friday, 22 police officers of various ranks took part.
Exhibition: The Police Public School organised its annual exhibition here on Friday. Mr Ashok Jailkhani, Director, Doordarshan (Jalandhar Kendra), inaugurated the exhibition by lighting a ceremonial lamp.

LUDHIANA

Painting competition: The Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle, Dugri unit, organised a drawing and painting competition at Gurdwara Singh Sabha, Phase I, Dugri. As many as 1100 students from 18 schools participated.

PATIALA

Demonstration: Employees of the local unit of the LIC held a demonstration here on Friday in protest against privatisation of the insurance sector. The rally was addressed by Mr Narinder Walia, President of the Northern Zone Insurance Employees Association.
Elected: The following are the office-bearers of the Patiala Colonies Welfare Federation: president — Mr Avtar Singh; general secretary — Dr Tarlok Singh; and secretary — Mr Harpal Singh Khangura.
Free eye camp: The Lions Club, Patiala Central, will organise an eye operation camp on Sunday at DAV High School, Devigarh, near here, in collaboration with State Bank of Patiala, Devigarh and Mandi Devigarh branch.

SAMRALA

Camp: A three-day free eye camp organised by the local Durga Mandir Committee concluded here on Friday. As many as 361 patients were examined and 60 were operated upon.
Accident: Ashok Kumar, an employee of the PSEB, was killed in a road accident here on Thursday.
Press club: The following have been elected office-bearers of the local Press Club: president — Mr P .S Batra; vice-president — Mr Ram Gopal; general secretary - Mr Sanjay Garg; and cashier — Mr S.P. Kalra.
Employment camp: A self-employment camp was organised here on Friday at the local B D O's Office. As many as 155 educated unemployed attended the camp. Mrs Daljit Inder Kaur, District Employment Officer, Ludhiana, and Mr Jawahar Lal, Employment Officer, Samrala, were present on the occasion.

AMBALA

Three arrested: The police has arrested three persons in connection with the sale of illicit liquor which led to hospitalisation of four persons on Wednesday.
Killed: Inder Mohan, a student of S D College, was killed in an accident near the college on the Ambala-Jagadhri road in the Cantonment on Friday. Irate students blocked the road for more than an hour demanding arrest of the truck driver.

FARIDABAD

Murdered: Ashwani Kumar was murdered and two others were injured when six armed persons allegedly attacked them on Thursday in Itamad Pur village. The police has registered a case against them.
Opium seized: The police arrested six women at Ballabhgarh on Thursday and seized a large quantity of opium from them. A case has been registered against them.

HISAR

Honoured: Dr Jit Singh, Mr Subhash Chander, Mr Kuldip Singh, Dr A.P. Singh and Dr Krishnamurthy, veterinary scientists of Haryana Agricultural University, have been selected for the prestigious Dr A.K. Bhargava Memorial Award for their outstanding work in the field of Veterinary Radiology during 1997.

KAITHAL

Arrested: The local police has arrested Hoshiyar Singh, a resident of Hisar, and seized 400 gm opium from him. He was booked under the NDPS Act.
Raided: The local police raided Dera Bela Singh near here and seized 1520 kg of lahan and arrested 12 persons, according to Mr Sudhir Choudhry, SP Officials of the Excise Department also accompanied the raiding team.

KURUKSHETRA

Blood donation: A blood donation camp organised by Maanda National College, Shahabad, was inaugurated by Mr Lajveer Singh, SDM, Thanesar, on Saturday. As many as 45 units of blood were collected.

SONEPAT

Jat Sabha: The district unit of the Haryana Jat Sabha has constituted an executive committee with Mr Raghbir Singh Sehrawat as President and Mr Ram Chander Shastri as General Secretary.
Protest: The Sonepat Citizens Council on Friday protested against the poor streetlighting in the city and urged the civic authorities to take immediate steps for improving it.

YAMUNANAGAR

Couple injured: Amarjeet, a leader of the Haryana Roadways Workers Union, and his wife, Lazwanti were injured when they were allegedly attacked by a group of persons on Friday. The police has registered a case.top

CHAMBA

Study project: The first ever linguistic study project of five dialects of this district was launched by the Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore, last week. Dr J C Sharma, Deputy Director of the institute, said the project envisaged linguistic study of Indo-Aryan dialects of the Western Pahari group as spoken in Himachal Pradesh.

NURPUR

Six injured: As many as six persons were injured in a group clash at Nagrota Surian town of Jawali subdivision on Friday. They were admitted in Dr Rajindera Prasad Medical College, Dharamsala. The police has registered a case.

SOLAN

Facility: The Chief Medical Officer, Dr L.B. Purohit, has set up an eight member committee of medical experts for the examination and issuance of certificates to handicapped persons in the district. The committee will operate from the office of the Chief Medical Officer every Saturday and issue certificates on the spot.top
