AMRITSAR

Resentment: Resentment prevails among plus two (private) students as they have not so far received their detailed marks cards. They had appeared in the examination in April this year. The students said that they could not apply anywhere in the absence of the detailed marks cards.
Mittarta mela: The two-day third Raja Porus Indo-Pak Punjabi Mittarta mela would begin on November 14. The Mela is organised to promote mutual trust between the people of India and Pakistan. It is organised by the Folklore Research Academy. According to Dr Tara Singh Sandhu, President of the Academy, the mela is organised every year in memory of the 10 lakh persons killed during Partition.
Lok Adalat: Thirty-seven cases relating to industrial disputes and labour laws were disposed of at the lok adalat held here in the Labour Court. The adalat was presided over by Mr RC Sharma, Additional District and Sessions Judge-cum-presiding officer, Labour Court. In all 54 cases were enlisted in the lok adalat for hearing.

HOSHIARPUR

Urged: Mr Satnam Singh Kainth, MP and National President of the Bahujan Samaj Morcha has urged the BJP and its allies to take stern action against hoarders and black-marketeers and control the prices of essential commodities. He was addressing a rally of his party workers at Green Park here on Wednesday evening.

KAPURTHALA

Legal services camp: A special camp is being organised at the local district courts complex on November 9, in connection with the celebration of Legal Services Divas in the state by Punjab State Legal Services Authority, according to Mr V B Handa, District and Sessions Judge. Information on availing free legal services from lok adalats, permanent lok adalats, and legal aid council scheme will be provided at the camp.
Surprise check: Punjab Local Bodies Minister Balramji Dass Tandon, in a surprise check at the local Municipal Council office on Thursday found five employees absent from duty. He directed the Executive Officer to issue show-cause notices to those employees and take stern action against them.
Fake certificates: The detective staff of Kapurthala police on Thursday arrested Sarabjit Singh, alias Sabi, a resident of Tehli village under Kartarpur police station on the charge of making fake Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes certificates and driving licences. The police also recovered some fake driving licences and stamps from his possession.

KHARAR

Road accident: A scooterist, Mr Gurmeet Singh, was killed while two others were seriously injured when their scooter was hit by a truck near Desu Majra village near here on Wednesday night. According to the police, a case has been registered against Jaspal Singh, driver of the truck, and the injured persons have been admitted to the PGI at Chandigarh.

Lodhi Club: Capt Anil K. Verma has been elected General Secretary of the Lodhi Club. Other office-bearers of the club include: Treasurer — Mr Navneet Sehgal; Bar Secretary — Mr Trilok Dhingra; Cultural Secretary — Mr Manoj Gupta; Sports Secretary — Mr Ramesh Pashan; and Lady Executive — Mrs Sunanda Joshi.

Token strike: About 6000 non-teaching employees working in 160 private colleges of Punjab and Chandigarh will observe a one-day token strike on November 19 to press their demands of pay revision on the pattern of Punjab government employees, notification of pension and gratuity scheme and grant of enhanced medical allowance. This was disclosed here on Thursday by Mr R K Parmar, General Secretary of the Private Colleges Non-Teaching Employees Union. The employees of colleges affiliated to Guru Nanak Dev University would hold a joint protest rally at Doaba College in Jalandhar, added Mr Parmar.

ROPAR

Subsidy on tractors: As a part of a Central Government scheme to encourage technology in agriculture sector seven tractors will be given to farmers in the district on subsidised rates during the current year. According to the Deputy Commissioner here a subsidy of Rs 30,000 per tractor would be given. Twentytwo per cent tractors would be given to the farmers belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes. The applications for the same can be sent, on prescribed forms, by December 15 to the Chief Agriculture Officer here.
Telegrams by post: The telephone of the Telegraph Office at the Head Post Office here has been dead since November 2, and this has affected work at the telegraph office. Telegrams to the subpost offices in the nearby villages are being sent by post.

Scooterist killed: Pawan Kumar, a resident of Kakkar Majra died after the scooter which he was driving was hit by an unidentified vehicle near the village on Thursday night. The autopsy of the deceased was conducted at the local general hospital.top

AMBALA

Recruitment rally: The IAF is holding a rally at Kapurthala on November 17 and 18, for the recruitment of Airmen. According to Sqn Ldr Naveen Jain, Commanding Officer of the Airmen Selection Centre here, the selection tests for the Technical and Non-Technical trades would be held at Sainik School, Kapurthala.
Case registered: A case of attempt to murder has been registered by the Mullana Police against Malkiat Singh, Harnel Singh, Surinder Kaur, Baldev Singh, Charanjit Kaur and Lakhwinder Singh. The case has been registered on the complaint of Mrs Balwinder Singh, wife of Malkiat Singh, who alleged that the suspects had poured kerosene on her and set her on fire. She has been admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital, Sector 32, Chandigarh.
Seminar: A seminar on privatisation of the insurance industry would be held at the Rukhmini Devi Hall in the Cantonment here on November 20. According to Mr SK Aggarwal, General Secretary of the GIC Employees Union (Chandigarh Region). Mr Aggarwal said here on Thursday that the Union Finance Minister, Mr Yashwant Sinha, would be the chief guest and the Governor of UP, Mr Suraj Bhan, would preside over the function.

Youth festival: The Zonal Youth Festival of Kurukshetra University was inaugurated here at Government Post-Graduate College on Thursday by Mr Vishnu Bhagwan,Secretary Education, Haryana. Over 300 boys and girls from 22 colleges are taking part in this three-day festival.
Power theft: Eight cases of power theft have been registered in the district on Thursday. According to police sources here five cases were registered in Adampur, two in Hansi and one in Hisar city. The cases were registered on the basis of the complaints of the respective SDO's (Electricity) of the areas.
Gang busted: The police on Friday claimed to have busted a gang of vehicle thieves, operating in the district and the adjoining areas. A spokesman of the Police Department in a statement said here that the police arrested five members of the gang after it raided their hide-out on Thursday night. One .315 bore pistol and about two dozen live cartridges were also seized from them.
Congress protests: Congress activists in Hansi, 26 km from here, took out a procession in the city on Friday in protest against the poor law and order situation in the district, lawlessness, rise in the prices of essential commodities. Mr Amir Chand Makkar, a former MLA and Mr Prakash Chand Gupta, President of the local unit of Congress led the procession. The Congress workers also submitted a memorandum to the SDM's office.

Free legal aid: The District and Sessions Judge, Mrs Kiran Anand Lal, has said free legal services were available to the people of Scheduled Castes, backward classes, handicapped persons, women, industrial workers, children below 18 years and to the people of weaker sections whose income was below Rs 18, 000 per annum.
Chief Secretary's visit: Mr RS Verma, Chief Secretary, Haryana, visited nearly 12 flood affected villages of this district on Thursday to assess the loss due to rain and floods. He was accompanied by the Deputy Commissioner and other officers.

SONEPAT

Meeting: The Bharatiya Gramin Anchal Samiti has decided to take part in the election campaign for the forthcoming Assembly elections in the states of Delhi, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the samiti here on Wednesday. Mr Bhagat Singh Balhara, President of the samiti presided over it. The meeting appealed to all secular forces to unite and fight the elections against the BJP and other communal parties
Timing changed: The Haryana Government has changed the timings of its schools in the state. According to the new timings, the schools will open at 9 a.m. and close at 3.30 p.m.
Plastic surgery camp: The Sonepat unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) will organise a one-day "burn and plastic surgery" camp here on November 8.
Demand: A memorandum by wholesale traders of foodgrains market here and arhatias of local vegetable and fruit market, was sent on Thursday to the Chief Minister, Mr Bansi Lal, demanding immediate transfer of the Secretary-cum-Executive Officer of the local market committee and a high-level inquiry into complaints against him. The traders alleged that the said officer was thick with unscrupulous traders and arhatias who had been evading market fee.
Suburban trains: Resentment prevails among commuters against the late running of suburban trains on the Sonepat-Delhi section of the Northern Railway. Many commuters alleged that repeated complaints to higher railway authorities in this regard, had fallen on deaf ears. This has led to inconvenience to thousands of commuters.

Yajna for peace: To spread the message of world peace and welfare of the society, a Sahshtrachandi Mahayajna was organised by the residents of 11 panchayats at Laharanwali Mata Mandir at Harsi, near here. The yajna concluded on Wednesday with "Purna Ahuti". Langar was organised by the panchayats for the devotees taking part in the Mahayajna.

SHIMLA

Strike suspended: Teachers of Himachal Pradesh University Model School have suspended their four-day old indefinite strike till November 30 following talks with the Vice-Chancellor, Dr C L Kundu, here on Thursday. According to a spokesman of the agitating teachers, their demands for regularisation of services would be placed before the Finance Committee and the Executive Council within a month.top
