Inquiry ordered
The Deputy Commissioner during his surprise visit
to the Government High School, Padri Kalan near
Sur Singh, on Tuesday found the entire staff of
the school including its Principal absent in the
morning. The newly constructed rooms were also in
bad shape. He ordered an enquiry into the
construction of the building.
Two killed
Two children, aged 11 and 12, were killed in a
road accident on the Amritsar-Chheharta road here
on Monday. Both died on the spot when a truck hit
them.
BATHINDA
Escaped
Gurdeep Singh, an accused in a theft case,
escaped from the lock-up of the Civil Lines
police station here on Monday. Mr Harnek Singh,
SSP, said Jagraj Singh, Assistant Sub-Inspector,
Ajit Singh, constable and Raj Kumar, a Home Guard
jawan; had been charged with negligence under
Sections 223 and 224 of the IPC.

Elected

Sentenced
Mr R.M. Gupta, Sessions Judge on Tuesday
sentenced Balwinder Singh of Manak Dheri village
to life imprisonment and asked him to pay a fine
of Rs 2000 for murdering Balwinder Singh of the
same village.

Honesty
ln a rare act of honesty, Afzal, a taxi driver,
returned a purse containing cash and jewellery to
Mr Chakti and his wife, who had left it in the
taxi while alighting at the Dehradun railway
station a few days ago.
LUDHIANA
Campaign
The Forest Department here has launched a special
month-long "greenery campaign" and 5.30
lakh trees will be planted on government forest
land, along the roads, canals and the Dhussi
bundh, according to Mr Arun Goel, Deputy
Commissioner.
MOGA
House burgled
Thieves entered the house of Mr Gurmel Singh, a
resident of Takhanwadh village under Badhnikalan
police station, and committed a burglary on
Tuesday.
Arrested
The Nathuwala police on Wednesday arrested a
proclaimed offender Ruldu Singh of Rode village.
A case was registered against him in 1980.
Encroachments
The Deputy Commissioner on Monday directed all
shopkeepers, khokha owners and footpath vendors
to remove all encroachments, as ordered by the
Punjab and Haryana High Court.
NAWANSHAHR
Development works
Dr Upinderjit Kaur, Technical Education Minister,
while presiding over a meeting of the District
Planning and Development Board here on Monday,
directed district officials to complete all
development projects by August 31. She also
exhorted them to implement all welfare schemes.
PHAGWARA
Released
Twentyfour RMP doctors, who were arrested on
Monday, were released on a bail here on Tuesday.
These RMPs were booked under Sections 148, 149,
186, 188, 332 and 353, IPC.
Chain snatched
Two scooterists snatched a gold chain from Mrs
Sunita Saini in the local Satnam Pura locality on
Tuesday.
SIRHIND
Power shortage
The supply of power to ward number 13 here has
been erratic for the past 10 days. The PSEB,
Sub-Divisional Officer, Mr Bahadur Singh, said a
defect in the transmission line coming from
Rajpura was the reason behind it.
