England beat SA, level series NOTTINGHAM, July 27 (Reuters) Michael Atherton and Alec Stewart, past and present captains, were at the crease together to carry England to an emphatic series-levelling victory over South Africa in the fourth Test at Trent Bridge today. England, 108 for one overnight in pursuit of a target of 247, eased to success by eight wickets midway through the fifth and final day to square the five-Test rubber 1-1. Atherton just failed to complete his 13th test century, finishing 98 not out with an on drive off Shaun Pollock which went for three to clinch the win at 247 for two. Stewart briefly clasped Athertons hand as the batsmen crossed for the winning third run as the crowd of more than 10,000 offered a standing ovation. A second wicket stand of 152 between opener Atherton and Nasser Hussain had all but won the match, although Stewart made absolutely certain of completing the job in style with a rousing innings of 45 not out from 34 balls, including nine handsome fours. Atherton and Hussain had guided England to within just 55 runs of victory with the minimum of difficulty when South Africa broke through in the first over after lunch. Hussain fell to a breathtaking catch by Jacques Kallis at second slip off Donald for an invaluable 58 spanning 170 balls and containing five boundaries. Atherton reached his 37th Test half-century with two successive boundaries off Pollock before moving inexorably towards his century which he seemed certain to reach until Stewart launched his scathing attack. Courage, concentration and a wonderful technique were once again the key attributes of Athertons innings which spanned five hours and 55 minutes, 277 balls, and 14 fours. Stewart was in imperious mood from the moment he arrived. He pulled a tired Allan Donald for a brace of fours, swept left-arm wrist spinner Paul Adams for another boundary and straight drove both Donald and Pollock for another four apiece. His first six scoring shots were boundaries. The only time England previously successfully chased more than 247 to win a test on home soil was against Australia at The Oval in 1902. Having struggled for much of the series, England can now look forward to the final Test at Headingley starting on August 6 with renewed confidence. Sang improves but may never walk UNIONDALE, July 27 (Reuters) Injured Chinese gymnast Sang Lan was able to sit up and had greater use of her shoulders and elbows yesterday after spinal fusion surgery on Saturday, doctors said. Sangs parents have visited her at Nassau County Medical Centre. The doctors said at a news conference that the 17-year-old Sang would begin rehabilitation therapy today but was still considered unlikely to walk again. "She pulled through the operation very well," Dr Vincent Leone, who performed the operation, said. "This surgery will enhance her motion, but we have to remember that theres a long way to go." Sang was hurt last Tuesday during vault warm-ups before the start of the Goodwill Games gymnastics finals. The Chinese national vault champion landed on the back of her head on the mat after making a mistake on a simple warm-up vault. The accident caused a fracture dislocation of the C-6 and C-7 vertebrae at the base of Sangs neck damage that was partly corrected by the surgery. Doctors operated on the front and back of Sangs neck, using three titanium plates and several screws to stabilise her spinal column. They also removed bone fragments from the destroyed C-6/C-7 disc and used a bone graft from Sangs left hip to repair other damaged areas. Sang was awake and talking two hours after surgery, when she was listed in critical but stable condition. By yesterday morning she had been taken out of the "halo" that had been preventing further damage and was wearing a smaller brace that still limited her movement. She also began eating solid food for the first time since the accident. Sangs parents, who live in Ningbo, China, arrived on Saturday and spent the night at the hospital with their daughter. Leone said the course and location of Sangs rehabilitation would be determined in conjunction with them but for now would involve simple movement to strengthen her muscles. She will also continue on the experimental nerve regeneration drug Sygen for approximately another 55 days. Leone said he expected Sang to regain enough use of her hands and wrists to be able to push a wheelchair but that he still doubted she would walk again. Sang has no use of her legs and no feeling from the middle of her chest down. Sangs accident received worldwide attention, and the hospital has been flooded with postcards, letters and stuffed animals sent by well wishers. At the news conference, Nassau county executive Thomas Gulotta read from a postcard that urge her to "keep your chin up and pray for guidance." Sang has been a member of the Chinese national team since the age of 11. Her father, Sang Shisheng, is a government housing management officer. Her mother, Chen Xiufeng, is a factory worker. |

USA PARIS, July 27 (AFP) Spain will face Switzerland in the final of the Fed Cup in September after clinching a 3-2 victory over the USA by winning a marathon doubles which lasted nearly three hours. Monica Seles had put the USA into a 2-1 lead when she avenged her French Open final defeat by beating Arantxa Sanchez Vacario. Seles scored a 6-4, 6-0 win in just 65 minutes in the first of the second day's singles although the Spanish no. 1 was clearly handicapped by an injury to her left leg. Conchita Martinez kept Spanish hopes alive by beating Lisa Raymond 7-6 (7/1). 6-4. Reigning world champ clinches gold NEWYORK, July 27 (AFP) Two Russian world champions displayed overpowering form, but only one came away with a gold medal here at the Goodwill Games. Reigning world champion Dmitri Sautin won the three-metre springboard title with 696.99 points, 48.84 ahead of American runner-up Troy Dumais. "Every year it gets more difficult," Sautin said. "When I was young I had no injuries. This programme is difficult. Its longer and more tiring than most competitions. I feel good I was able to be consistent." Sautin had the two top-scoring plunges of the day, topped by 81.18 points for a concluding reverse 1 1/2 somersault with 3 1/2 spins. But Russian two-time world champion and reigning Olympic wrestling champion Buvaissar Saytiev will go home without gold. He won 10-0 at 76 kg but Russia lost 16-14 to the USA in the team dual meet final. "We didnt bring our strongest team," Saytiev said. "They beat us here but there is no reason why we cant win next time". That chance will come in Septembers World Championship at Tehran. US wrestlers showed they have the talent to win and said they do not fear for team safety even after protesters disrupted Saturdays US-Iran match. US 85 kg world champion Les Gutches said: "The Iran government has a lot to gain by us going there and coming back safely. They want to host the World Championships again. They want things to go right." Gutches made the winning takedown with 43 seconds remaining to beat 1996 Olympic champion Khadijmorad Magomedov 4-3 but was matter-of-fact about the achievement. "Its nice," he said. "But the big thing is the World Championship." Russian individual titles went to Saghid Murtasailyev in 97 kg, Andre Shumlin in 130 kg and Saytiev while solo crowns were won by Americans Cary Kolat in 58 kg, Gutches and Lincoln McIlravy in 69 kg. "We can win the worlds as a team. We just have to go out and perform," he said. "This will help our confidence." Americans won the first four matches sparked by Tony Purler pinning Murat Ramazanov in 27 seconds in 58 kg and world runner-up Kolat beating 1994 world champion Magomed Azizov 8-3. European 139 kg champion Aydin Polatgi of Turkey beat Irans Ali Reza Rezaei 3-0 to give Turkey a 16-13 victory for bronze over Iran, which had individual champions Behanam Taiebi in 54 kg and Mohammed Talaie at 58 kg. World beach volleyball number one pair Brazilians Para Ferreira and Guilherme Marques beat Olympic champion Karch Kiraly and fellow American Adam Johnson 12-11, 12-4, to win South Americas first gold. Marcelo Arrue won the mens chariot and Keirin to lead the US to victory in the team cycling event with 92 points, 21 more than an all-star collection of British, Australian and New Zealand riders. The US team pulled ahead 25-24 in the overall gold medal race. China rose to third on the Goodwill gold medal list with six when Ling Jie and Huang Xu captured the mixed pairs gymnastics event. Ling, who fell on the uneven bars on Saturday, scored a 9.875 on balance beam for the days top score to win her first international title. "I feel very happy," Ling said. "I just had to forget about yesterday. I knew if we gave our normal performance we would have a good chance." Todays schedule features the start of the boxing competition and the womens football title match between the USA and China. The final is a rematch of the 1996 Olympic final, won 2-1 by the USA to extend a winning streak on US soil that has reached 37 games. China beat Norway in the semifinals on penalty kicks 4-2 after a 1-1 draw. The US team ripped Denmark 5-0, with Mia Hamm scoring three goals. |
Agassi wins title for fourth time WASHINGTON, July 27 (DPA) Andre Agassi of the USA defeated Australian Scott Draper 6-2, 6-0 yesterday to capture the Legg Mason Classic for the fourth time in his career. Second-seeded Agassi, who won the Washington-based ATP tournament in 1990, 1991 and 1995, received $ 95,000 for winning the final against Draper, 24, the tournaments 14th seed. It was the 37th tournament title of Agassis career. Draper got into the final after top-seeded Michael Chang pulled out of a semifinal against him after re-injuring his left wrist. In the other semifinal, Agassi defeated third-seeded Wayne Ferreira of South Africa, 6-1, 6-0. Kuerten triumphs STUTTGART (AP): Brazils Gustavo Kuerten on Sunday swept to his first title since the 1997 French Open and just the second of his career when he edged Karol Kucera in three sets at the Mercedes Open. Kuerten, pouncing on the Slovakians weak second serve, came from a break down in the final set to win, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 at the $ 1.04 million event. The 21-year-old had emerged from nowhere to capture last years French Open, becoming the first Brazilian to win a Grand Slam. Kuerten has admitted he had trouble living up to expectations after that triumph. Since then his best performances were reaching two finals in 1997. "Its not like I completely disappeared this year," said Kuerten, ranked 28th. "Ive reached a few semifinals. Ive just had to be patient until my game got better again." Kuerten had ousted the current French Open champion, Spains Carlos Moya, in the first semifinal yesterday. Kucera spoiled Marcelo Rios bid to take over the no. 1 ranking in the second, beating the Chilean when a victory would have lifted the world no. 2 past Pete Sampras on the ATP computer. Kucera jumped to a 4-0 lead against Kuerten in just 17 minutes during a match which saw few long rallies, with both players gambling on winners. But Kuerten, who fell behind early in all his matches at the event, began to slam backhand winners off the world no. 11 as he slowly took control of the match. He also began to land his serve, yielding just three points in four service games as he easily captured the second set. Kuerten took home $ 2,79,000 for the title, while Kucera earned $ 1,46,000 while reaching the final for the second straight year. The Slovakian, who has won three tournaments, was beaten last year by Spains Alex Corretja. |
Welfare body of Punjab players Tribune News Service CHANDIGARH, July 27 The saga of harassment and denial of what is due to sportspersons of the state should soon be a thing of past if the Punjab Sportspersons Welfare Association an association intended to act as a watchdog of the rights of Punjab players serves its purpose. Mr Arvind Khanna, General Secretary of the Punjab Olympic Association and chairman of the newly-constituted association, while addressing a Press conference here today disclosed that the association would endeavour to get due respect, regard and honour for the players, who make ceaseless and untiring efforts to win glory for the state as well as for the country. Nearly 300 players, including 100 of the international level, participated in the meeting summoned at short notice at Patiala on July 25 in which Jaipal Singh, an Arjuna awardee, was elected president. Mr Khanna berated the system in which players after facing innumerable hardships and winning laurels for the state had to look outside for seeking employment in various central government and other organisations like the BSF, the CRPF, Indian Railways and Indian Airlines, etc, as their own state invariably failed to give suitable employment to them. And after having worked for these organisations their state never acknowledged their contribution in the matter of job, pension, and travel and medical facilities. Mr Khanna stated emphatically that the sports associations should be run by players as they were more conversant with the ground realities having themselves experienced the pulls and pressures the modern-day sport exerts. They must be special invitees at the meetings of such associations. "A transparent policy of involving players in sports associations should be devised. A minimum number of sportspersons must at least be given representation," stated Mr Khanna adding the POA should also make amends and give fair representation to players. The POA general-secretary lamented that players domiciled in the state, who had been honoured with the Arjuna Award in recognition of their efforts in the field of sports, had not been given the Maharaj Ranjit Singh Award. Endorsing the view of Col Raminder Singh, Director, Sports, Punjab, at a meeting held earlier, Mr Khanna asserted that sport medicine clinics should be set up to improve the overall standard of sports in the country. Highlighting the plight of the sportspersons in the state, Harvinder Singh, an international player, a national champion and an NIS diploma holder with distinction, said all he got in lieu of years of hard work in sports was a petty job, that too after running from pillar to post and through political pressure. Evidently not happy with this he stated that a definite policy for the benefit of players should be evolved for the benefit of players keeping in view their achievements. Commenting further, he revealed that Punjab did not have even a single cycling coach despite the fact that the players from the state dominated mostly in national-level tournaments. The association would take up the demands of the players with the Punjab Government and strive for categorywise representation of players as per their achievements. Women would also be given due representation in the association, said Mr Khanna, who is also the general-secretary of the Youth Akali Dal (B). |
Baskaran for sack of Pillay, Mukesh From Our Sports Reporter PATIALA, July 27 In a shocking expose, former national hockey coach V. Baskaran has severely criticised the 'below par' performance of several senior players who did duty for India in the Utretch World Cup, where India put up a dismal performance. Baskaran's outburst has come in a report submitted to the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) just before to the selection of the Indian probables for the ensuing Commonwealth Games and the Bangkok Asian Games. Baskaran's report submitted to the IHF president, Mr K.P.S. Gill, with a copy forwarded to Mr Jyothikumaran, secretary-general of the IHF, while coming down heavily on skipper Dhanraj Pillay and versatile forward Mukesh Kumar has even gone on to say that 'to continue to play with him (Dhanraj Pillay) would prove to be disastrous for Indian hockey'. In a severe indictment of the skipper's playing capabilities, Baskaran has gone on record as saying that "the IHF would do well to counsel Dhanraj Pillay on his retirement plans. That is if the IHF does not take steps to drop him from the national squad". Regarding the skipper, Baskaran goes on to state that "Pillay did precious little to boost the morale of the squad. His involvement with the team and the management was not up to the mark". In his report, Baskaran has also castigated yet another senior player Mukesh Kumar, saying that "Mukesh can only play in patches. He is not a good trainer in training camps. His mobility with co-players was also found to be wanting". Baskaran goes further to add that "Mukesh is not a team man and is a liability to any team at the international level. Baskaran in his disparaging remarks against Mukesh Kumar says "he is a very poor tackler and tends to lose the ball against the rhythm of the game. This creates a gap of at least 40 yards between the forward line and the midfield and this gap is exploited to the maximum by the rivals." A tinge of disappointment and frustration runs through the former chief coach's report, "Despite the best efforts of the management the motivation level of the entire team was at a low ebb", states Baskaran. He has accused the forwards for their poor showing, failure to control the pace in every match, and above all the inability of the captain to play a crucial role whenever the situation demanded. Goalkeepers Jagdeesh Ponnappa and Jude Manezes also bear the brunt of Baskaran's criticism, although the chief coach has suggested that both the goalkeepers, keeping in view their age should be retained. The same applies to young full backs L. Barla and Tirkey who Baskaran says, "never played to their potential." Ironically full back Anil Aldrin, who has not found favour with the selectors for the Commonwealth Games, has come in for some praise by the former national coach, whom Baskaran says is 'an excellent team man'. Among the midfielders, the performance of Baljit Singh Saini and Mohammad has been termed as 'dependable with minor weaknesses in interception and positioning'. However, the other midfielder, Thirumalvalan has earned a special word of praise as the national coach has termed his performance as 'excellent, although he was not in the starting eleven of any match the Indians played'. The much talked about Sabu Varkey has also come in for comments. States Baskaran: "Sabu Varkey was never focussed on the World Cup". Adds Baskaran about Sabu Varkey: "He should not be allowed to play for the country any more." About the performance of the Indians in the World Cup Baskaran has this to say: "Lack of fitness, inadequate grasp of fundamentals, and poor leadership qualities can be cited as the basic reasons for India's deplorable performance." Interestingly according to top IHF sources, Baskaran's report does not speak much about centre forward Rajeev Mishra, who despite sustaining a knee injury at the camp at Patiala, was taken to Utretch and was then dropped from the original list of 16 players submitted to the World Cup organisers just 24 hours before India's opening game against Germany. In his report Baskaran has also taken strong exception to the inept handling of the India-South Korea match by umpire Irfan Zaidi. Where India after leading 3-2 lost the match due to what Baskaran says "poor umpiring and even worse play dished out by our defenders". |
3 spectators killed at US auto race BROOKLYN, July 27 (AP) Three spectators were killed the first fan deaths at a major race in the USA in more than a decade and six were injured by flying debris from a one-car crash at the US 500 yesterday at Michigan speedway. A tyre and some suspension pieces from Adrian Fernandezs car flew into the fourth-turn grandstand, killing two persons immediately. A third person could not be resuscitated. The race went on, as there was no way for the drivers to know the tragedy that what was taking place, and Greg Moore made the last of a record-shattering 62 lead changes on the final lap and held off Jimmy Vasser and Alex Zanardi to win the race. "People came here to watch us race and put on a good show, which we did today," Moore said. "But that tragedy definitely puts a damper on it." None of the dead and injured were immediately identified. Tommy Cameron, a speedway spokesman, said all were adults. The six injured spectators were all in stable condition with injuries ranging from fractured leg to neck and back pain, said Robin Kirkpatrick, a spokeswoman for Foote Hospital. They were the first fatalities at a championship auto racing team event or any other major oval track race since the 1987 Indy 500, when a tire came off a car and was struck by Roberto Guerreros car, sending it into the top row of the grandstand and killing a fan. |

In the 10th minute, centre forward Pawan took the ball from the 25-yard line and beat the rival custodian Pritipal Singh to make it 2-0. Himachal Pradesh continued to attack and outside-left Vijay collecting the ball just outside the "D", beat a rival defender before despatching a powerful hit which entered the net. In the second half, Himachal Pradesh played a slow game with short passes.
