India fail to break jinx abroad WELLINGTON, Dec 30 (PTI) Indias miserable record abroad continued as their bowlers failed today to tame the New Zealand batting to lose by four wickets the second cricket Test which was tantalisingly poised on the first four days. With the Basin Reserve track here providing no assistance to their spinners the Indians could do little but watch the Kiwis run away with the match this morning, thanks to a century partnership for the sixth wicket between Craig McMillan and chris cairns which saw the home side overhaul a modest victory target of 213 by scoring 215 for six, just 23 minutes after lunch. While the Indians have yet to break the jinx of not winning an away Test in five years, the New Zealands win, fifth successive triumph on home soil, gave them 1-0 lead in the three-match series after rain forced the first Test in Dunedin to be abandoned without a ball being bowled. The last Test India won abroad was at Colombo in 1993 when they won the three match series against Sri Lanka 1-0. In the final morning, India tasted early success but their fielding was ordinary as they failed to put pressure on the Kiwis compounding the ineffectiveness of the bowling. Resuming at overnight score of 73 for four, New Zealand lost an early wicket of Paul Wiseman (0), trapped leg before wicket by paceman Javagal Srinath but the pair of MacMillan (74 not out) and Cairns (61) made light of the 140 runs they needed during the day against all speculations of an uphill struggle. The pair put on 137 runs for a record sixth-wicket stand against India bettering the previous best of 87 by J.W. Guy and A.R. MacGibbon compiled at Hyderabad in 1955-56 season and dispelled all expectations of the visitors. It was New Zealands fourth win from six Test matches this year while India faced third straight defeat from five Tests this year losing both the away matches. India started the day on an encouraging note claiming Wisemans wicket before the home side could add any runs to their overnight total. The ever-unpredictable Cairns joined McMillan in the middle and showed no nerves to pace-spin attack of Srinath-Anil Kumble. He started gracefully stroking runs at ease and with handy crowd cheering him, the Indians began to lose poise and efficiency on the field. McMillan soon coasted to his half century (50 4x4, 1x5, 81b) after he suffered a deadly blow on his shoulder from a Srinath delivery, which did not lift as much as the batsman had expected to. With Cairns punishing the bowlers, the 50-run stand between the two came in only 51 minutes off 72 balls before he survived a close call when an appeal to a straightforward catch by Rahul Dravid at forward short-leg was denied by the umpire much to the chargin of the Indian fielders. Carins rubbed further salt in Indias wounds when he came down the pitch and slammed Harbhajan Singh out of the ground and raced to a career-reviving 50 (4x4, 1x6, 71b) as New Zealand went for lunch sitting meerely at 188 for five. The all-rounder started the second session and looked to be in hurry to finish off the match. Cairns twice drove Srinath straight down the ground for fours before Kumble dropped him at gully. Srinath, however, had the consolation of taking Carins wicket with hosts needing just two runs for victory. The batsman played an uppish shot to Ajay Jadeja in extra cover. Dion Nash flicked the first ball he faced to the square-leg boundary and brought up an exciting win for his team. Overnight batsman McMillan remained unbeaten on 74, made off 121 balls in 194 minutes and laced with six fours. India, hungry for a win abroad, however, gave a lacklustre performance on the field even as bowlers failed to gain any turn from the pitch. Skipper Mohammad Azharuddin mainly relied on his pace-spin attack of Srinath-Kumble and they both tried to justify captains confidence, but lacked a cutting edge. Srinath claimed nightwatchman Wiseman quickly, but then had to wait for Cairns to play a loose shot near the end to gain further reward. The third and final Test will be played in Hamilton from January 2 with Indian captain hinting some changes in the team composition when the visitors will aim to square the series. SCOREBOARD India (1st innings): 208 (M. Azharuddin 103, S.R. Tendulkar 47, S.B. Doull 7-65). New Zealand (1st innings): 352 (Nash 89, D.L. Vettori 57, A. Kumble 4-33). India (2nd innings): 356 (S.C. MELBOURNE, Dec 30 (Reuters) Australia recalled star leg-spinner Shane Warne today for the final Ashes Test after a surprise win for England gave the tourists a chance of levelling the series. The worlds greatest slow bowler, who has taken 313 Test wickets, replaced novice paceman Matthew Nicholson in the 12-man squad for the fifth Test starting in Sydney on Saturday. "I feel like Im starting my career all over again," said Warne, who has not appeared for Australia since shoulder surgery in May. "Im feeling pretty confident with my bowling, but the proof of the pudding will come next week." Warne missed the first four Tests while he returned to first-class cricket without much success for Victoria state in Sheffield Shield matches. He has also been caught up in one of the sports worst scandals after news broke that he and fellow Test player Mark Waugh had taken money from a bookmaker to provide pitch and weather information during a 1994 tour of Sri Lanka and Pakistan. After that revelation, Warne and Waugh have been summoned to appear before a Pakistani inquiry into match-fixing and bribery. The inquiry will sit in Melbourne on January 8 to hear the two cricketers, who were reluctant to travel to Pakistan. Team: Mark Taylor (Captain), Michael Slater, Justin Langen, Mark Waugh, Steve Waugh, Darren Lehmann, Ian Healy, Damien Fleming, Colin Miller, Stuart Macgill, Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne. The final Test has been given extra spice by Englands amazing 12-run victory in the fourth Test on Tuesday. Although Australia have retained the Ashes, England could level the series at two Tests each if they win. Nicholson, a Western Australian fast bowler, had played just seven first-class matches before being called up for the fourth Test after claiming seven English wickets in an innings during a tour match. He replaced injured paceman Jason Gillespie. Nicholson captured four wickets for a total of 115 runs in the two innings in the Melbourne Test and hit 14 runs. Warne said he had been experimenting over the past six weeks to make sure that all his deliveries, including his trademark "wrongun", were right. "Ive been experimenting in the last six weeks in the nets to see that all my deliveries are right," he said. And he added that his recall came the day after he found out that his wife, who is due to give birth to their second baby in late May or early June, would be having a boy. The couple already have a girl. |

Sasikiran,
Kidambi joint leaders JALANDHAR, Dec 30 The 6th day of the 28th National Junior Chess Championship at the local MGN Public School saw the top seeds showing their class with Tamil Nadu players I.M. K. Sasikiran and S. Kidambi snatching the lead with 5.5 points each. International Master K. Sasikiran trounced S. Vikramjit of Manipur in just 32 moves of Modern Binoni Opening. Vikramjit sacrificed an exchange on move 24 to get compensation but Sasikiran craftily deployed his pieces knight and black bishop around the white king. Taking advantage of Vikramjit's blunder on 31st move Sasikiran sacrificed his queen for a mate in three moves. The clash between international masters Tejas Bakre of Indian Airlines and yesterday's leader S. Kidambi of Tami Nadu saw the latter exchanging his pieces right form the word go, showing his intentions for a draw and Tejas was unable to do anything. The end game saw light coloured bishops with both the players with no opportunity for either of them to win. R. Karthik, the defending champion from Tamil Nadu, came back on to top reckoning after defeating Vikas Sharma of Punjab convincingly and pushed him down the ladder. Playing king's Indian defence with an excellent piece play with his queen, knight and bishop, he mated his Punjabi rival in just 38 moves. The former world under-10 champion P. Harikrishna of Andhra Pradesh was held to a draw by Rahul Shandily from Bihar. Though Rahul committed some mistakes in the middle game, Harikrishna could not use them to his advantage. Rahul's brilliant idea of capturing h2-v8 diagonal through Be5 turned the tables but tough A.P. lad did not allow him more than half a point. Tamil Nadu's T.V. Karthekeyan in a Scicillian Scandanavian opening went on loosing his grip on the game to a fighting Bengali player Deepanjan Dass, who blundered by capturing a c3 pawn with his rook and lost it with a knight fork and also the game. Dileep Tripathi of UP playing white against S. Satyapragyan of Orissa in a king's Indian Seemich shocked his rival with 14 Bg5 after his rival made a blunder Qh4, trapping his queen and forcing him to resign in just 35 moves. Rishipal Singh of Hyderabad shocked V.R. Kamble of Maharashtra in Scicillian Defence after warding off his aggressive attacks, moving his bishops harmoniously, winning a piece on 43rd move and the game in 55 moves. Neelotpal Dass broke his drawing spree against Sameer Singh of Delhi today in a Scicillian Alpine opening sealing his rival's fate in just 30 moves. Points at the end of the 6th round: I.M. Sasikiran and S. Kidambi 5.5 points each, Tejas Bakre, R. Karthik 5 each; P. Harikrishna, Rahul Shandilya, Neelopal Dass, Dileep Tripathi Beenish Bhatia, Shashi Kant Kutwal and D. Robin, Nikhil, Kanitkar for one-dayers NEW DELHI, Dec 30 (PTI) The cricket board caused no surprises as it named Tamil Nadu veteran Robin Singh, Pune left-hander Hrishikesh Kanitkar and Delhi off-spinner Nikhil Chopra to be flown to New Zealand as replacements for the five match one-day series to be held from January 9 to 18. Board secretary Jaywant Lele told reporters the trio would be replacing opener Navjot Sidhu, teenaged off-spinner Harbhajan Singh and medium-pacer Robin Singh (Jr) in the squad currently doing duty in the Test series. The replacement players will be reaching New Zealand on January 4, the third day of the third and final Test to be played in Hamilton from January 2 to 6. The three were picked after the selection committee, which met here yesterday to pick the Board Presidents XI and Wills XI for the Wills Trophy tournament, held a tele-conference with the team management at Wellington, Lele said. Robin Singh played in Indias victorious campaign in the Sharjah triangular tournament in November while pune all-rounder Kanitkar, who went out of favour after India returned from their Zimbabwe tour in October gets another chance to cement his place in the limited overs squad. Chopra had given a good account of himself with a clutch of wickets in the Sharjah tournament and was expected to be on the Kiwi tour from the outset, but teenager Harbhajan Singh was picked ahead after the cloud over his bowling action was cleared. |
Walsh to miss Test; Ambrose doubtful DURBAN, Dec 30 (Reuters) The beleaguered West Indies cricket team suffered a body blow today with the news that Courtney Walsh will miss the fourth Test against South Africa because of a hamstring injury. New-ball partner Curtly Ambrose is struggling with knee and back problems which could also rule him out of the match at Newlands in Cape Town starting on Saturday. "Courtney has a slight hamstring tear and will not be playing any cricket for seven to 10 days," said West Indies manager Clive Lloyd. "Another day or two and the doctors should be able to tell us whether he will be fit to play." Walsh sustained his injury
while fielding on the final day of the third Test in
Durban yesterday. South Africa won by nine wickets to
take an unbeatable 3-0 lead in the five-match series. |
