Poppy husk seized: The Sadar
police, acting on tip-off, intercepted a truck
coming from Rajasthan near Bahawawala village on
the Hanumangarh-Abohar road on Saturday and
seized 30 bags of poppy husk. Raghubir Singh of
Chhoharwala, Sukhjinder Singh of Bhulath and
Bagga Singh of Kadupur were arrested under the
NDPS Act.HOSHIARPUR
Arrested: The police here
recovered the Maruti car forcibly taken away from
Dr Sandip Kharbanda of Mohalla Kamalpur here on
Saturday and arrested Gurpartap Singh, alias
Sodhi, of Mohalla Gobindpur, Jalandhar District,
at Sham-Chaurasi in this regard. This was stated
in a press note issued by the police here on
Sunday.
Mela: "Sood
Mela' 98" was organised by the local Sood
Sabha at Maurya Palace here on Sunday. Mr Trilok
Chand Butail of Shimla was the chief guest. A
colourful cultural programme was also presented
by the children on the occasion.
JALANDHAR
Seminar: A seminar on the
struggle of farmers "Dasha and Disha"
was organised by the Kirti Kisan Union at Desh
Bhagat Yadgar Hall here on Sunday. Mr Satbir
Singh, General Secretary of the union,
highlighted the problems of farmers.
Workshop: The
In-service Training Institute of the DAV College
Managing Committee, New Delhi, will organise a
four-day seminar-cum-workshop for senior teachers
of DAV Public Schools from December 26 at DAV
College here. Nearly 800 participants from all
over the country will participate. This was
stated by Ms B. Manuja, Principal, Dayanand Model
School here on Sunday.

Rotary Club: The local Rotary
Club organised a function on Friday at Government
Middle School, Sauna, 5 km from here, to
distribute sweaters and shoes among 20 students,
according to a press note issued by the President
of the club, Mr Satish Vohra.
Competitions:
The Punjab School Education Board organised a
three-day regional-level educational competition
here at Adarsh Bal Vidyalaya. Students of schools
in Nawanshahr, Ropar and Hoshiarpur districts
participated.
Mela: The
eighth "Sabhyacharak Mela" dedicated to
Punjabi folk singer Jagmohan Kaur was organised
by the Jagriti Kala Kendra at Aur village, 15 km
from here, on Saturday. Mr Sarwan Singh Phillaur,
State Welfare Minister, presided.

Elected: The following
have been elected office-bearers of the Punjab
Excise Inspectors Association: President
Mr Bhupjit Singh; General Secretary Mr
P.K. Mehta; and Finance Secretary Mr Ashok

Camp: The
local Lions Club (Citizen) will organise a free
eye check-up camp at Karhali village on December
22. This was stated by Mr G.B. Singh, President
of the club, here on Sunday. Medicines and
spectacles will be given free of cost to the
patients.
Urged: The
Punjab Excise Inspectors Association in a
statement issued here on Sunday urged the Chief
Minister to remove various anomalies in the pay
scales and the stagnation in the promotional
avenues of Excise Inspectors.

Inquiry sought: Panchayat
members and residents of Bhairo Majra village,
near here, have sought an inquiry into the
"wrong and hazardous" road-levelling
done from Jagatpur village to Bhairon Majra. They
have sent a representation to the Chairman of the
district Grievances Removal Committee here
regarding this.

Sweaters distributed: The local
Citizens Council at a function organised here on
Saturday distributed 90 sweaters to poor children
of different government primary schools here,
while 10 blankets were given to class IV
employees.

Sweets prices: Resentment
prevails among residents of the town over the
high prices of sweets charged by halwais. They
alleged that there was no check on it by the
administration.
