ABOHAR
Poppy husk seized: The Sadar police, acting on tip-off, intercepted a truck coming from Rajasthan near Bahawawala village on the Hanumangarh-Abohar road on Saturday and seized 30 bags of poppy husk. Raghubir Singh of Chhoharwala, Sukhjinder Singh of Bhulath and Bagga Singh of Kadupur were arrested under the NDPS Act.

HOSHIARPUR
Arrested: The police here recovered the Maruti car forcibly taken away from Dr Sandip Kharbanda of Mohalla Kamalpur here on Saturday and arrested Gurpartap Singh, alias Sodhi, of Mohalla Gobindpur, Jalandhar District, at Sham-Chaurasi in this regard. This was stated in a press note issued by the police here on Sunday.

Mela: "Sood Mela' 98" was organised by the local Sood Sabha at Maurya Palace here on Sunday. Mr Trilok Chand Butail of Shimla was the chief guest. A colourful cultural programme was also presented by the children on the occasion.

JALANDHAR
Seminar: A seminar on the struggle of farmers "Dasha and Disha" was organised by the Kirti Kisan Union at Desh Bhagat Yadgar Hall here on Sunday. Mr Satbir Singh, General Secretary of the union, highlighted the problems of farmers.

Workshop: The In-service Training Institute of the DAV College Managing Committee, New Delhi, will organise a four-day seminar-cum-workshop for senior teachers of DAV Public Schools from December 26 at DAV College here. Nearly 800 participants from all over the country will participate. This was stated by Ms B. Manuja, Principal, Dayanand Model School here on Sunday.

NAWANSHAHR
Rotary Club: The local Rotary Club organised a function on Friday at Government Middle School, Sauna, 5 km from here, to distribute sweaters and shoes among 20 students, according to a press note issued by the President of the club, Mr Satish Vohra.

Competitions: The Punjab School Education Board organised a three-day regional-level educational competition here at Adarsh Bal Vidyalaya. Students of schools in Nawanshahr, Ropar and Hoshiarpur districts participated.

Mela: The eighth "Sabhyacharak Mela" dedicated to Punjabi folk singer Jagmohan Kaur was organised by the Jagriti Kala Kendra at Aur village, 15 km from here, on Saturday. Mr Sarwan Singh Phillaur, State Welfare Minister, presided.

PATIALA
Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Punjab Excise Inspectors Association: President — Mr Bhupjit Singh; General Secretary — Mr P.K. Mehta; and Finance Secretary — Mr Ashok Kumar.

Camp: The local Lions Club (Citizen) will organise a free eye check-up camp at Karhali village on December 22. This was stated by Mr G.B. Singh, President of the club, here on Sunday. Medicines and spectacles will be given free of cost to the patients.

Urged: The Punjab Excise Inspectors Association in a statement issued here on Sunday urged the Chief Minister to remove various anomalies in the pay scales and the stagnation in the promotional avenues of Excise Inspectors.

Inquiry sought: Panchayat members and residents of Bhairo Majra village, near here, have sought an inquiry into the "wrong and hazardous" road-levelling done from Jagatpur village to Bhairon Majra. They have sent a representation to the Chairman of the district Grievances Removal Committee here regarding this.

TARN TARAN
Sweaters distributed: The local Citizens Council at a function organised here on Saturday distributed 90 sweaters to poor children of different government primary schools here, while 10 blankets were given to class IV employees.

MOGA
Sweets prices: Resentment prevails among residents of the town over the high prices of sweets charged by halwais. They alleged that there was no check on it by the administration.

Mazdoor sabha: A deputation of the Mazdoor Sudhar Sabha called on the Adviser to the Administrator, Mr Jagdish Sagar, on Monday and urged him to confer the ownership rights to the left-out allottees of tenements. A press note claimed that the Adviser assured the delegation that the left-out allottees would be granted ownership rights soon.

Seminar: A two-day seminar on "Employment potential for youth in rural industry" will be organised by the Centre for Vocational Studies, Department of Zoology, Panjab University, and the Khadi Village Industries Commission from Tuesday at the mathematics auditorium in the PU campus. The seminar will be inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor M.M. Puri.

Playing equipment: Punjab National Bank has provided playing equipment to eight schools of the region. This was stated by Mr B.P. Chopra, Chief Regional Manager of the bank, at Sector 26 Institute for the Blind here on Monday.

Resigns:
Mr V.V. Aditya, a member of the Panchkula Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, in a press release issued on Monday said that he had resigned as a member of the forum. The resignation, Mr Aditya said, had been tendered in the wake of a recent judgement of the Punjab and Haryana High Court quashing the appointment of members of the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum in Haryana.

Demand: The House Owners Welfare Association of Sector 4 has demanded more electricity bill collection centres in the township. A spokesman of the association said the shifting of bill collection centre in Sector 11 to the 66 kv sub-station at Industrial Area, Phase-II, had caused a lot of inconvenience to consumers.top

AMBALA
Injured: Mr Ram Lakhan of Rangia Mandi, near here, sustained burns when he touched a live were in his house on Saturday. He has been admitted to the Civil Hospital.

Mishap: Baljit Singh of Machhounda village was killed on the spot when his motor cycle collided with a Haryana Roadways bus at the railway flyover in the cantonment area on Saturday. The pillion rider, Mr Amar Singh, was injured.

GURGAON
Electricity bills: Mr Krishan Kumar, Deputy Commissioner, said a recovery of Rs 19.75 crore was made by the Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam during November from the outstanding electricity bills. He said this campaign would continue for the next few months.

Press club: Mr Madan Lal Gujjar, Vice-Chairman, Zila Parishad here, on Sunday inaugurated the office of the local press club at 19, Housing Board Colony.

Power projects: The HVP-BJP government in Haryana has initiated power projects worth Rs 8,000 crore to ensure 24-hour power supply for the people of Haryana. This was stated by Mr Surender Singh; General Secretary, HVP, while addressing party workers at the local Surkhab Tourist Complex here recently.

Land dispute: One person was killed and five injured in a land dispute at Joharnali village in the district. The dispute arose between Satnam and his father's brother, Lal Chand Kamboj when Satnam objected to his uncle's fencing of land beyond their limit.

Dairy farming: A 21-day Dairy Farming Training Programme concluded here at the auditorium of the local Krishi Gyan Kendra recently. The concluding function was organised by the local centres of Nehru Yuva Kendra, Krishi Gyan Kendra and Dairy Development Department. Mr Arun Gupta, Deputy Commissioner, presided.

Disputes settled: Under the weekly "Koshish" programme 134 family disputes have been settled in the past 29 weeks by the local police and a local social organisation, Nirjharni Sahyog Samiti. This was stated by the police chief, Mr B.S. Sandhu.

SONEPAT
Licences cancelled: The Food and Supplies Department has cancelled the licences of six ration depots in the district during the current financial year following the detection of irregularities in the distribution of rationed commodities. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr P.K. Mahapatra, said here on Sunday that the department had also confiscated the security amount totalling Rs 9,050 of some ration-depot holders. Cases under the Essential Commodities Act were registered against three depot-holders.

Recruitments: The Haryana Pradesh Janata Dal has decided to launch a massive campaign from January 1,1999, for recruiting 2 lakh new members in addition to 8,000 activists of the party. This was stated by Mr Ved Parkash Vidrohi, President of the state unit of the party here on Sunday.

YAMUNANAGAR
Dies: Shanti Sarup Mehta, Editor of the weekly newspaper, "Bolte Patthar", died here on Sunday. He was 80. He is survived by his wife and a son.
