Honoured: Mr Ram Narain, Mr Balwant Singh and Mr Girdhari Lal Bhatia were honoured by Mr Darshan Singh Grewal, SDM, at a function organised by the Punjab Government Pensioners Association at Teachers Club here on Thursday.

AMRITSAR

Urged: The Anti-Corruption Forum has urged the Punjab Chief Minister to withdraw the portfolio of Labour from Mr Balramji Dass Tandon as he had allegedly failed to look after the problems of labour and labour law practitioners. In a press release issued here on Friday, Mr Hari Singh Thakur, Chairman of the forum, suggested that the Labour Department should be given to an independent minister so that he could streamline the department.
Eye camp: The local Janseva Medical and Eye Relief Society organised a free eye check-up camp on Friday at the Guru Nanak Pura Tapai chowk. As many as 250 patients were examined and provided with medicines free of cost.

FARIDKOT

Amount collected: Faridkot district has collected Rs 16.54 crore till November 30 under different small saving schemes against the target of Rs 12 crore during the current financial year, the Deputy Commissioner said here on Friday.

HOSHIARPUR

Sentenced: Mr R.M. Gupta, District Sessions Judge, has convicted Manjit Singh of Husanpur Lalowal and Sukhdev Singh of Pandori Nijran of murder and sentenced them to life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 2,000. He also award three year’s imprisonment to Manjit Singh under the Arms Act and fined him Rs 500.

JALANDHAR

Deputation: A deputation of the Government Homoeopathic Medical officers Association, Punjab, met the Anomalies Committee constituted by the Punjab Government. Dr Darshan Singh, General Secretary of the association, said the difference in their scales and allowances and those of PCMS doctors, and the pay disparity among homoeopathic medical officers were discussed.

Celebrated: The Senior Citizens' Day was celebrated on the premises of Dashmesh Public High School here on Thursday. Mr K.M. Vashisht and Mr Attar Singh appealed to the government to protect the rights and dignity of senior citizens.

Urged: The Baghapurana Action Committee, urged the Government to set up a judicial complex and a new bus stand near the court complex for the convenience of people.

Released on bail: The state President of the Shiv Sena Rashtrivathi, Mr Subash Talwar, was released on bail on Thursday. A case under Sections 323, 34 and 389 of the IPC has been registered against him.
Elected: Mrs Narinder Kohli of the BJP has been elected Senior Vice-Chairman of the local Municipal Council. She defeated her rival, Mr Parshotam of the Congress, by four votes.

NAWANSHAHR

Amount collected: A sum of Rs 30 crore has been collected under various small savings schemes till November against the target of Rs 36 crore during the current financial year, the Deputy Commissioner, Dr Roshan Sunkaria, said here on Thursday.

PATHANKOT

Urdu poet dead: Pandit Badri Nath Kamil (88), an Urdu poet, of Pathankot died here on Saturday. He was a disciple of Raj Kavi Pandit Mela Ram "Wafa".

Camp: As many as 75 operations were performed at a Family Welfare Sterilisation Camp organised by the district health authorities at the Primary Health Centre, Moonak, on Friday. Dr Puran Singh Jassi, Director Health and Family Welfare, Punjab, inaugurated the camp. Dr S.K. Khullar, Civil Surgeon, presided.top

Training Centre: National Fertilisers Limited (NFL), has started a training centre and mobile kitchen gardening service in the city. Mr S.K. Patra, Director, Marketing, inaugurated the centre on Sunday. On the occasion he distributed mini-kits of seeds, seedlings and fertilisers among women kitchen gardeners free of cost. A mobile van has also been pressed into service for catering to local kitchen gardeners.

Medicos' demand: The Himachal Medical Officers Association has demanded that the state government should implement the Fourth Pay Commission report in totality, pay non-practising allowance and increase the house rent, rural health, academic, conveyance and compensatory allowances.

Shot dead: Labh Singh, a farmer, was shot dead behind the office of the Market Committee, Tohana, on Thursday. The police has registered a case.

HISAR

Gate meeting: Members of the Nagar Palika Karamchari Sangh held a gate meeting here on Saturday in support of their demands. They demanded bonus in cash and implementation of the agreement reached between employees and the government during the strike of Nagar Palika employees.
Appointed: Mr Shyam Singh Chouhan, Chairman of the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee (Labour Cell ), has appointed Mr Lajpat Rai Sharma as Chairman of the District Labour Cell. He also appointed Mr Naresh Kumar as district convener of the cell.

Shop burgled: Thieves entered Arora Kriyana Store in Kirti Nagar here on Thursday and took away cash. The matter has been reported to the police.
Meditation camp: A four-day Vishvas meditation camp was started at the local Janata Bhavan here on Thursday. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Rishi Gautam, President of Vishvas, said meditation was the best medicine for inner and outer health.
Two arrested: The police has arrested Nathar Singh of Hanumangarh and Jassir Singh of Taruana village in this district. They were allegedly involved in poppy-husk smuggling. Mr B.S. Sandhu, SSP, said here on Friday that other members of the gang had been identified.
Liquor seized: The police on Friday arrested Surinder Singh, a resident of Guru Nanak Nagar here, from Sagwan chowk and seized 30 pouches of liquor from his possession. Earlier, the police had seized 40 liquor pouches from Ashok Kumar and 20 pouches from Satvir Singh.

Campaign: The Haryana Vidyut Parsaran Nigam has launched a campaign in this division to catch defaulters. Mr R.S. Nandwani, Superintending Engineer, said Rs 1 crore had been recovered during the campaign. He said the office of the department would remain open on Sunday to enable the consumers to deposit their pending bills.top

KULU

Boycott: Mr Ishwer Dass, President of Kulu District HPSEB Senior Assistants Welfare Forum, Sharabai (Bhuntar), said in a press statement here that a resolution had been passed to boycott the forthcoming meeting of the central executive committee of the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Employees Association. He said senior assistants would not attend this meeting in view of the alleged indifferent attitude of the central executive committee regarding the grant of a revised pay scales of Rs 2000-3500 to them.

Truck impounded: A truck containing tins of resin, allegedly stolen from Karsog, has been intercepted at Gara Mora with the help of Punjab Police. Mr Sanjay Kundu, SP, said the truck had been impounded and brought back to Karsog. The driver and other occupants, however, managed to escape.

Appointed: Mr Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, President, Himachal Pradesh Youth Congress, has appointed Mr Kamal Dhaulta as Organising Secretary of the Himachal Pradesh Youth Congress.

SOLAN

Rally: Activists of the Congress held a rally here on Friday in protest against "unprecedented" rise in the prices of essential commodities. Later, a delegation of the DCC submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner.
Grants released: The Education Minister, Mr Ishwar Dass Dhiman, sought public cooperation in upgrading the present educational infrastructure of the state. He was speaking at the prize distribution function of the local Government Boys Senior Secondary School. He announced a grant of Rs 70,000 for the renovation of the school laboratories and Rs 5,000 to the students who had presented a cultural programme.
