FAZILKA
Office-bearers: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Government School Lecturers' Association, Ferozepore district unit: Patron — Mr Amar Lal Baghla; President — Mr Gurdev Singh Sidhu; Senior Vice-President — Mr Ajinder Singh; Vice-President — Mr Satish Kumar Sharma; General Secretary — Mr Jagdeep Pal Singh; Secretary — Mrs Poonam Kalra; Press Secretary — Mr Vijay Kumar Monga; and Finance Secretary — Mr Rattan Lal Kataria.

Protest rally: Mr Ravinder Luthra, Secretary of the Ferozepore unit of the state Pharmacists' Association, while addressing a meeting of pharmacists of local and Abohar subdivisions said the pharmacists of the district would stage a protest rally in front of the office of the Civil Surgeon on December 22. He criticised the government for not accepting their demands.

FEROZEPORE
Dharna: Members of the local units of the All-India Telecom Employees Union — Class III (Namboodri), the All India Telegraph Traffic Employees Union — Class III and the Indian Telecom Employees Union — Line Staff and Class IV, staged a dharna in front of the office of the General Manager, Telecommunications, on Wednesday.

HOSHIARPUR
Income tax: Mrs S.K Aulakh, Income Tax Commissioner (Jalandhar Range), said on Wednesday that 1,64000 persons in Jalandhar Range and 1,98000 in Ludhiana Range had applied for Permanent Income Tax Account Number. She said the account numbers had been allotted to about 1,00000, assessees in Ludhiana and Jalandhar Ranges and allotment to the remaining assessees would be done before March 31, 1999.

Stolen: A brief-case containing Rs 1,40800 was stolen from a Chandigarh-bound bus ( No PB 120-9770) at the local bus stand on Wednesday morning. Mr Gurjit Singh Oberoi, owner of the brief case, lodged a complaint with the Model Town police station.

LUDHIANA
Convocation: The convocation and prize distribution function of the College of Agricultural Engineering will be held on December 29 at the PAU. About 200 graduates will receive degrees.

PATIALA
Lecturer's association: The following have been elected office-bearers of the local unit of the Government School Lecturers Association, Punjab: District President — Mr Jarnail Singh Kaleke; Tehsil Presidents — Mr Gurjinder Singh Grewal (Patiala), Mr Harpal Singh Randhawa (Nabha), Dr Narinder Singh (Rajpura) and Mr Ram Kishan (Samana).

Operations performed: As many as 52 operations were performed by Dr S.P. Singh and Dr Sukhdip S. Bhoparai at a free eye operation camp at Sadhmajra village, near Samana. Food, medicines and glasses were given free of cost to patients by Akara Dharam Dhaja Sadhmajra.

PHILLAUR
Godown burnt: A godown of a furnishing house at Tehsil bazaar, Nakodar, was destroyed in a fire that broke out on Wednesday because of a short circuit. More than 100 youths tried to control the fire in the absence of a fire engine. The owner of the godown said one of the employees sustained injuries.

Road accidents: One woman was killed and more than 40 persons sustained injuries in seven different road accidents on the GT Road on Wednesday. The mishaps occurred due to poor visibility following thick fog. Thirteen vehicles were also damaged.

ROPAR
Youth festival: The Ropar Zone youth festival of Punjabi University, Patiala was organised at Amar Shaheed Baba Ajit Singh Jujhar Singh Memorial College at Bela, about 15 km from here. Nineteen colleges of the zone participated.

SAMRALA
Lawyers' strike: The lawyers of the local Bar Association observed strike here on Thursday to protest against the creation of family courts and different tribunals by the government.

Exhibition: A painting exhibtion by Mr Harpartap Singh was inaugurated by the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Command, Lieut-Gen H.B. Kala, at the Government Museum and Art Gallery here on Thursday.

Eye camp: As many as 208 students of a primary school at Haripur village were examined at an eye camp organised by the local Upkar Society on Thursday.

BHIWANI
Link roads: A meeting under the presidentship of Mr Ram Bhajan Aggarwal, Minister of State for Home and Tourism, held at the local PWD Rest House reviewed repair of roads in the district. The committee approved repair and construction of link roads to the town, Charkhi Dadri town and Tosham town. The Chairman of the Haryana Marketing Board, Mr Ved Pal had earlier sanctioned 50 link roads of Bhiwani town, seven link roads of Charkhi Dadri town and five link roads of Tosham town. Work on these roads would be completed within four months and cost more than Rs 2 crore.

Camp for cattle breeders: A two-day cattle breeders' training camp and animal health care camp concluded at Badhwana village, 50 km from here. Thousands of cattle breeders and progressive farmers attended the camp. Dr Suresh Kumar Yadav, Subdivisional Officer of the Animal Husbandry Department, Charkhi Dadri, presided over the function. Two thousand animals were treated at the camp and medicines were given to 3000 sheep and goats.

HISAR
Red Cross Society: The district Red Cross Society here provided health facilities to about 5,000 persons during the past month. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr P.C. Bhidan, said the society had also provided cash assistance worth Rs 26,000 to the poor and needy. The society had organised four blood donation camps at which 254 units of blood were donated.

Detained: The local police has detained 21 persons and initiated action against them for illegal possession of weapons. According to the SP, Mr Manjeet Singh Ahalawat, 16 pistols, a rifle, a revolver and 44 cartridges were seized from the possession of those arrested.

Students' stir: Students of the Engineering and Technology College of Haryana Agriculture University (HAU) went on a strike on Wednesday in protest against the non-fulfilment of their demands. The striking students raised slogans in support of their demands and boycotted classes.

KAITHAL
Lok adalat: A lok adalat will be organised here on December 19 to settle matrimonial disputes, grant of compensation in accident claim cases, to resolve bank disputes and other cases. This was stated by Mr C.R. Goyal, Additional District and Sessions Judge and Chairman of the district Legal Services Authority here on Wednesday. He said some High Court judges would also be present on the occasion. He said assistance of various social organisations, including the Lions Club, here, had been sought to make the adalat a success.

REWARI
Visit: The Minister of State for Food and Supplies, Mr Satpal Yadav visited the Dr S.S. Yadav Ram-bhagwan Charitable Institute of Cancer Management and Research on Tuesday. The centre is under construction at Mirpur village, 8 km from here. He praised Dr S.S. Yadav, a former director of the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Science at Rohtak, for setting up the cancer hospital — the first of its kind in rural areas.

Dirty water: The accumulation of dirty water because of the failure of sewerage has been a source of nuisance for residents of Shiv Colony, Ajay Nagar, Ramsinghpura, Yadav Nagar, Vikas Nagar and several other colonies of the town. The residents alleged that in spite of repeated requests for repairs the Municipal Corporation had not taken any action. The dirty water had entered numerous houses and break-out of an epidemic was feared.

SANGRUR
Funds released: The District Development and Planning Board has received a sum of Rs 2142.57 lakh for the current year for various development schemes. An amount of over Rs 1193 lakh has already been released for various development activities. A meeting of the District Development Board was held here on Tuesday. Mr Madan Mohan Mittal, Food and Supplies Minister, released a sum of Rs 75.83 lakh, including Rs 40 lakh for flood protection measures, Rs 26.83 lakh for expansion of health facilities and Rs 3.45 lakh for the construction of police stations.

SIRSA
Education programme: The District Primary Education Programme (DPEP) has been adjudged best for its noteworthy activities during the year 1997-98 and awarded a prize of Rs 5 lakh by the Haryana Primary Education Project Council, Chandigarh. This was stated by Dr Avtar Singh, Deputy Commissioner. He said that the DPEP in the district had played a vital role in ensuring 100 per cent presence and maximum enrolment of children of 6-11 years. A sum of Rs 5.65 crore had been spent under the programme to promote primary education in the district.

Dairy development: The Dairy Development Department has provided loan facilities, for the construction of sheds through various banks under the Commercial Dairy Scheme for purchase of buffaloes in the district. Disclosing this the Deputy Commissioner said the loans of about Rs 1.12 crore had been provided to the beneficiaries for the purchase of cattle during the current year.

Injured: Ramesh Kumar of Nohria Bazaar here was injured seriously by Raju and his brother on Wednesday. They attacked the victim with sharp-edged weapons. The injured was shifted to Civil Hospital for treatment and stated to be out of danger. Cause of the assault was stated to be old enmity.
Driver arrested: Buta Singh, a bus driver of Doonwali village in Man
sa district, was arrested from his village by the Ellenabad police on Wednesday for rash and negligent driving and running over a cyclist. Mr B.S. Sandhu, SSP, here said a criminal case under Sections 279 and 304-A of the IPC had been registered against the accused by the Ellenabad police station.

Thieves arrested: Hardev Singh, alias Raju and Jeeta Ram of Rania town in the district were arrested by Rania police. A case had been registered against them under Sections 457 and 380 of the IPC, for stealing two ceiling fans from Diamond High School at Rania.

Eye camp: An eye camp was organised at Dera Sacha Sauda. About 1,000 eye operations were performed and more than 700 patients were examined at the camp. Medicines and meals were provided to the patients free of cost.

SONEPAT
Impersonation: The Gohana police has arrested Tek Ram, a resident of Dhanana village, on the charge of impersonation. He got himself arrested in place of his son Dharambir, who allegedly was involved in a case of power theft.

DHARAMSALA
Accidental firing: A recruit, of the Police Training College, Droh, near Palampur, died, after he accidentally pressed the trigger of his rifle. According to the SP, Mr K.C. Sadyal, Sanjeev was taking the final firing examination at the college. He was a resident of Bohan village, near Jwalamukhi.

Two killed: Two persons were killed and one was injured when a truck rolled down a khud, near Harnera village, on Tuesday night. The deceased include the driver-cum-cleaner, of the truck, Uttam Singh (28) and the helper, Vinod Kumar (18).

KULU
Murder: The Headmaster of Government High School, Nirmand, Mr N.K. Sharma, was murdered allegedly by a student whom he had punished for using unfair means in the examination. The Headmaster had caught Devraj red-handed while copying in the examination and sent him out of the examination hall. The student attacked the Headmaster with an iron rod when he came out of the school and injured him seriously. The injured was taken to the Local Hospital by passers-by. Due to serious nature of the injuries he was shifted to Shimla but he succumbed to his injuries on way to Shimla. The student has been arrested by the local police.

Fire accident: A fire broke out at Shanaag village on Tuesday and two houses were damaged by it. Dry grass was stored in the houses. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr R.D. Dhiman, said the Tehsildar of Manali accompanied by a team of revenue officials rushed to the village.

SHIMLA
Elected: Mr Kali Ram Kalet and Mr Prem Verma have been elected Chairman and Vice-Chairman respectively, of the market committee of Shimla and Kinnaur.
