Cong worker killed
HYDERABAD, Dec 17 (UNI) — The police opened fire after a Congress worker was killed and five others were injured in a bomb attack by ruling Telugu Desam Party workers at Shankarpur village in Cuddapah district of Andhra Pradesh late last night. The police here said a 15-member group led by TDP worker B. Babul Reddy went to the house of Congress worker Pilli Pedda Asanna and hurled country-made bombs, killing the Congress worker on the spot and injuring five others. The police opened fire to disperse the groups which clashed due to old enmity.

Resignation denied
NEW DELHI, Dec 17 (PTI) — The BJP today denied reports about Industry Minister Sikander Bakht’s resignation from the Vajpayee government over the controversial Patents Bill, saying no minister had resigned or threatened to resign over the issue. "No minister has resigned or threatened to resign over the Bill," party spokesman Venkaiah Naidu told reporters here. "I have no information about Bakht’s resignation," he said, denying the media reports.

Abu aide held
MUMBAI, Dec 17 (PTI) — A dreaded criminal owing allegiance to the Abu Salem gang, was yesterday detained under the MPDA for a period of one year. The detainee, Iqbal Aziz Shaikh, alias Hateli (29), a resident of the Dattu Ghati chawl, Andheri, was wanted in several cases of extortion, the police said.
