ABOHAR
Dies: Santa Ram (40) was found dead in his rented room in Gopal Nagar here on Sunday. Doctors examining the body said he had consumed sulphos. He was unemployed and had sent his children to his native village in Uttar Pradesh.

AMRITSAR
Pensions: More than 48,000 old persons of the district have been given pensions by the district administration. This was stated by Mr Narinderjit Singh, Deputy Commissioner, while addressing a gathering at Bhucher Khurd village in the district on Sunday.
Award: The Sahit Vichar Kendra has decided to give the Sujan Singh award to a Punjabi writer, Anwant Kaur. Dr Kulbir Singh Kang, a Punjabi critic, said here on Sunday.
Urged: Mr Tarun Chugh, President of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, Punjab, in a press note issued here on Sunday condemned the killing of 20 immigrants belonging to a particular community by suspected National Democratic Front militants in Kokrajhar district in Lower Assam, he urged the Union Home Minister, Mr L.K. Advani, to get the culprits arrested.

GURDASPUR
Arrested: Kashmir Singh, Special Police Officer (SPO) and Bhupinder Singh, a truck driver, were arrested by a police naka party at Ucha Thara, under Dhar police station in the district on Friday. They were allegedly taking 45 quintals of khaur wood from Jammu and Kashmir to Punjab in a truck. Mr Gaurav Yadav, SSP, said the smuggled wood was worth Rs 1 lakh. The SPO has been placed under suspension.
Sangat darshan: Mr S.K. Sandhu, Deputy Commissioner, at a sangat darshan held in Masania village on Saturday said the village drain would be desilted before the rainy season. He added that 32,800 beneficiaries had been covered in the district under the old-age pension scheme.

LUDHIANA
Seminars: The Rajiv Gandhi Forum will organise seminars at the national and state levels from January, 1999, on the theme “Rajiv Gandhi and Dalits”. This was stated by Dr Satwant Singh Mohi, a member of the working committee of the PPCC.
Body found: The body of Prakash Lal of Sainda Chowk has been found. According to the police, the body had deep cut injury marks. It has been sent for a post-mortem examination.

NAWANSHAHR
Foundation stone: Capt Kanwaljit Singh, Finance Minister, Punjab, has said there is no financial crisis in the state. The SAD-BJP government has increased the revenue of the state and the development of the state will not be affected. He was speaking at a gathering after laying the foundation stone of M.R. City Public School at Balachaur on Saturday.

SAMRALA
Mishap: Jaspal Singh and Ranbir Singh of Dugri-Ludhiana were killed in an accident when their car collided with a truck near Kubbe village on Sunday. They were employees of the Punjab State Warehousing Corporation posted at the godowns in Ludhiana.

Charge: The Chandigarh Colonies Welfare Association has accused the local municipal corporation of adopting a step-motherly attitude towards their genuine demands. At a meeting here on Sunday, speakers alleged that differences in the BJP had affected the working of the corporation.

PANCHKULA

Plea: The Local Citizens Welfare Association has urged HUDA to close all T-junctions opening on the main roads here. Mr S.K. Nayar, President of the association, said traffic policemen should be deployed at the junctions.
Office shifted: The office of the Assistant Executive Engineer (Suburban subdivision), Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam, Mr Surinder Mohan, has been shifted from 1197, Sector 11, to house Now 49 to 51, Housing Colony, 66KV substation, Industrial Area, Phase-II

FATEHABAD
Cell created: A special cell has been created in the district headed by an Inspector of the police to make National Highway 10 an accident-free zone. The Fatehabad police has made available two vehicles with fog lights fitted on them, a crane and an ambulance for this purpose.

GURGAON
Grant: The International Agriculture Development Fund has given Rs 11.03 crore as a grant to the Mewat Development Agency, Nuh, under the Mewat Area Development Scheme, according to Mr M.K. Middha, Chief Executive Officer of the agency. Under this scheme, new canals— Dabaulo Minor, Shadipur Minor and Saral Minor— will be constructed in this area.

KURUKSHETRA
Campaign: Under a special campaign launched by the district police, as many as 70 tractor-trailers were challaned and impounded on Monday under the Motor Vehicle Act. These were being used for commercial purposes by their owners instead of agricultural.

ROHTAK
Two die: Two children died in two road mishaps in the district on Sunday. Ashish (4) succumbed to his injuries at a hospital after he was hit by a Haryana Roadways bus near Azadgarh village. In another incident, Hari Om, a teenager, died after he was hit by a Matador near Gohana Adda here.

SIRSA
Order stayed: Mr S.D. Anand, Additional District and Sessions Judge, has stayed the three months’ sentence pronounced on three senior officers of the Telecom Department, Hisar Division, here on Saturday. According to sources, Ranbir Singh, a consumer of Mandi Dabwali had filed the contempt of court case against the three persons.
Postgraduate classes: Students of the district in a letter to the Haryana Government have sought the starting of the postgraduate classes of History at the local Government National Postgraduate College, where the postgraduate classes for Math have been started recently.
Office-bearers: The following have been elected office-bearers of the district Primary Teachers Sangh: President — Mr Balbir Singh Bishnoi; General Secretary — Mr Bagwan Sharma; and Treasurer —Mr Ashwani Kumar.
Succumbed: Sandeep (18), a farmer of Rasuli Khera village in the district succumbed to his injuries at the local Civil Hospital here on Sunday. According to sources, he became unconscious while spraying insecticide in fields and went into coma.
