AMRITSAR
New footpaths:
The Mayor, Mr Subhash Chander Sharma, on Friday inaugurated various development works in the Civil Lines area. The works include laying of footpaths at an estimated cost of Rs 8.26 lakh.
Bereaved: The BJP MLA Luxmi Kanta Chawla's mother, Mrs Mohan Wati (80), passed away here on Thursday after a prolonged illness. She leaves behind a son and two daughters. The cremation took place here on Friday which was attended by a large number of BJP workers.
PG advocates: The following were elected office-bearers of the Post-Graduate Advocates Association on Friday: President — Mr P.C. Bedwa; Senior Vice-President — Dr Devinder Singh; Vice-President — Mr S.P. Bhatia; Secretary — Mr Tilak Raj Mattu; and Joint Secretary — Mr A.S. Bhatia.
Half-day holiday: Government, semi-government offices and educational institutions here will remain closed for the second half of December 21 on account of the martyrdom day of Baba Jeewan Singh, according to a notification issued by the Deputy Commissioner.

Sadbhavna divas:
The CPM celebrated a national-level communal harmony day here on Friday.
Banks closed: All banks remained closed here on Friday following a call given by the National Platform of Mass Organisation.

Elected:
Dr P.K. Sharma, Director, Punjab Remote Sensing Centre, has been elected fellow of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences with effect from January.

MALERKOTLA
Receipts missing:
Octroi receipt books of the municipal council have been missing the municipal authorities said at a meeting here on Thursday. An enquiry officer has been appointed to look into the matter.

MOGA
Urged:
Residents of Baghapurana on Saturday demanded the removal of the statue of Bhagat Singh from the main bazar in order to facilitate the flow of traffic. They also sought the demolition of the newly-constructed shops at the bus stand as they were causing congestion.
Fall in prices: The vegetable prices came down considerably following mass marriage here on Saturday. According to a survey, cauliflower was quoted at Rs 3 a kg, tomato at Rs 20 and potato at Rs 5. However, the prices of pulses remained unchanged.

PATHANKOT
Eye camp:
A free eye operation camp was organised by the local Lions Club on Thursday. As many as 385 persons were examined and 55eye operations performed. Medicines, food and spectacles were given free of cost, according to Mr Rakesh Aggarwal, President of the club.
Accident: Sudhir (39) was killed when his van hit a tree near Malikpur on the Jammu-Jalandhar national highway on Thursday.

PATIALA
Dead:
Roop Chand Malhotra (86), a social worker, died of cardiac arrest on Wednesday. He has left behind a trust founded by him, according to social worker Amar Singh Kamboj.

Procession: The Nagar Kirtan Tal Mel Committee which met on Saturday, under the chairmanship of Maj N S Rangi (retd) at Sector 34 Gurdwara Sri Guru Teg Bahadur, unanimously decided to take out a colourful procession on January 2 to mark the birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh.

AMBALA
Medical camp:
A free medical check-up camp was organised by Punjab National Bank at Naneola on Wednesday. As many as 225 patients were examined and medicines provided free of cost at the camp.

BHIWANI
Foodgrain market:
Mr Ved Pal, Chairman, Haryana Marketing Board, has said Rs 1 crore will be spent on the improvement of the new foodgrain market here. He was speaking to traders and farmers in the market here on Thursday. He said Rs 6 crore would be spent on the construction and repair of roads.

GURGAON
Body found:
An unidentified body with stab injuries on the neck was found from Sector 55 here on Thursday. In another incident, a resident of Rojkameo, Robda, was killed while he was sleeping in his house.
Free books: The Mewat Development Agency, Nuh, will provide books and stationery free of cost to Rs 1.17 lakh school going girls of the backward areas, according to Mr M.K. Middha, Chief Executive Officer of the agency.
Krishi mela: A five-day krishi mela concluded at Nuh on Friday. Mr Trilochan Singh, Director, Haryana Public Administration Institute, gave away the prizes to participants.

SIRSA
5 arrested:
Five persons, including a municipal commissioner, were arrested under the Gambling Act on Thursday. A sum of Rs 1,410 was recovered from their possession.
Workers' union: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Haryana Government PWD Mechanical Workers Union (Irrigation Department): President — Mr Dharmvir; General Secretary — Mr Raj Kapoor; Senior Vice-President — Mr Ranjeet Singh; Vice-President — Mr Karan Singh; and Treasurer — Mr Rajinder.

Injured: Ram Bhagat received injuries when the three-wheeler in which he was travelling collided with a truck here on Friday. He was shifted to the Civil Hospital where his condition is stated to be stable.
Campaign: The local Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam (operation circle) has launched a campaign to collect pending amount from consumers. A sum of Rs 1,072 lakh has been recovered so far. Giving this information Mr M.P. Seth, Superintending Engineer, said on Saturday that 372 connections had been disconnected due to the non-payment of bills.

JWALAMUKHI
Lambasted: Former BJP MLA Kashmir Singh Rana in a statement on Saturday lambasted former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh for advocating the Panchayat Raj system. He said it was ridiculous that Mr Virbhadra Singh, who had earlier stalled the setting up of district planning committees of zila parishads, was now demanding powers for the panchayats.

KULU
Orientation camp: The Himachal Gyan Vigyan Samiti organised an orientation camp here on Friday. Mr S.R. Thakur, Additional District Magistrate, presided over the valedictory function.

SHIMLA
Workshop:
A three-day workshop on "The development of hill areas and university participation" started at HP University here on Friday. Mr Kishan Kapoor, Minister of Tribal Development, inaugurated the workshop.
