ABOHAR

Honoured: Mr Jagmohan Lal Khandelia, district Governor, Rotary International, honoured Dr Gur Parsad Bansal (social worker), Mr Hanuman Dass Goyal (social worker), Mrs Saroj Madan (teacher), Mr Raj Sadosh (journalist), Mrs Indu Bala (health worker), Mrs Vidya Sharma (sewing trainer), Mr M. L. Bajaj (postman), Mr Harinder Singh Bedi (mill worker), Mr Rajinder Kumar (electrician), and Mr Sunil Dutt at a function held here on Friday.
Accident: Jagdish Rai, a local resident, was killed in a road accident near Kallar Khera village on the Abohar-Sriganganagar road on Friday. The police has registered a case.

FEROZEPORE

Announced: During this financial year Rs 17 crore would be spent on development of this district. Of this Rs 4.75 crore had already been spent, Punjab's Minister for Rural Development and Panchayats, Mr Nirmal Singh Kahlon, said here on Friday.

GURDASPUR

Flayed: As many as 5,000 persons attended a public meeting held by the Sujanpur Block Congress Committee at Ranipur on Friday. Mrs Sukhbans Kaur Bhinder, a former Union Minister, and Mr Raghunath Sahai Puri, a former Punjab Minister, who were present on the occasion criticised the SAD-BJP government for failing to undertake development activities in the state.
Mass contact: Mr Gaurav Yadav, SSP, addressed a mass contact programme organised by the local Rotary Club, (Midtown) at Zafarpur village on Friday. He has directed police officials to accord due respect to village elders in police stations. Public complaints should be disposed of quickly. Mr Yadav redressed several complaints on the spot. He also inaugurated a free medical camp and veterinary camp organised by the club. As many as 125 persons and 103 animals were treated for various ailments.

KAPURTHALA

Strike: Members of the District Bar Association on Friday observed strike and boycotted courts to express solidarity with agitating lawyers of Hoshiarpur.

NAWANSHAHR

Announced: Dr Roshan Sunkaria, Deputy Commissioner, said at a meeting of the District Rural Development Agency here on Thursday that under the IRDP scheme a sum of Rs 94.70 lakh would be arranged as loans from banks to assist 433 poor families in the district.
Water shortage: Residents of Banga road, Kulam road and Chandigarh road in the town have been facing a shortage of water. The residents allege that the pump set installed here remains out of order most of the time. However, Mr Sartaj Singh Mangewalia, Senior Vice-President of the local Municipal Council, accused the Sewerage and Water Supply Board of not maintaining the pump set.
Natak mela: The local R K Arya College has organised a "natak mela" in the college. Teams from Kamla Nehru College for Women, Phagwara, Guru Nanak National College, Doraha, Kamala Lotia S. D. College for Boys, Ludhiana and Arya College, Ludhiana, staged plays on the occasion.

Marriage ceremony: The local Mohalla Sudhar Committee, Namdar Khan road, here on Friday organised a ceremony in which marriages of six poor girls were solemnised. Mr Parampal Singh Sidhu, SSP, was present on the occasion.
Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Government Middle School Head Masters Association, Punjab: President — Mr Shambu Nath; Vice-Presidents — Mr Hari Singh and Mr Sitar Mohammad; General Secretary — Mr Kedar Nath; and Cashier — Mr Gurdip Singh.

PHAGWARA

Urged: The Federation of Phagwara Small Industries on Friday urged the Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, to set up a focal point in Phagwara which was an industrial hub of the Doaba region. Mr Rajwant Singh Jhikka, chief spokesman of the federation, also decried shabby treatment meted out to industrialists by the Sales Tax Department.
Demands: The Punjab Education Minister, Mr Swarna Ram, has recommended the case of non-teaching employees of private colleges for revised pay scales as recommended by the Fourth Pay Commission. This was claimed here on Friday by Mr GP Chadha, President, Private College Non-Teaching Employees Union, Kapurthala district.

FARIDABAD

Conditional bail: Mr P. L. Goyal, Additional District and Sessions Judge, on Friday granted conditional bail to Om Prakash of Manpur village. He was charged with accepting Rs 2 lakh from Uday Singh, a farmer, for getting his sons recruited in the police.
Liquor smuggling: The police arrested Hari Singh and Mangal Singh of Meerut and seized as many as 19,600 pouches of country liquor and impounded a Tata Sumo in which the liquor was being smuggled from Pilibit.

GURGAON

Kidnapping case: The Pataudi police has registered a case of kidnapping of a minor daughter of Rajesh, a resident of Rajpura, against Dharambir, son of Narinder, of the same village. According to Rajesh, his daughter worked as a sweeper in houses. Both the boy and girl did not reach their respective homes in the evening.

HISAR

Drive: The Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Limited will launch a drive on Monday against consumers who have not cleared their pending bills, according to the XEN (Operation).
Trader robbed: Two miscreants allegedly looted Rs 37,000 from a trader near Banbhori village on Thursday. According to the police, Suresh Kumar, a trader, was going to his house on a scooter when two persons stopped him and looted the amount at pistol point. A case has been registered.

SIRSA

Social forestry scheme: The District Forest Department has distributed 1.36 lakh saplings free of cost under the social forestry scheme during the current financial year. Dr Avtar Singh, Deputy Commissioner, said the department had covered 597 hectares of public land, including forest lands, by planting 5.96 lakh saplings under the scheme in the district.
Scooter recovered: The police seized a scooter from Ayya Singh, alias Vickey, of Kariwala village in the district on Friday which had been reportedly stolen from outside Dhanukan Dharamshala, about 40 km from here, on Monday night.
Seized: The police seized 20.5 kg of poppy husk from the house of Harpal Singh Thakur, alias Kukkar, of Hebuwana village in the district on Friday. According to the police, the poppy-husk had been stored by the accused at his house without any permit or licence. A criminal case under the VDPS Act has been registered.
Killed: One person was killed on the spot while another was seriously injured in a road accident near Mandi Dabwali in the district on Friday. A Matador van hit Rattan Chand when he was crossing a road and also collided with a motorcycle, causing death of the driver of the motorcycle, who has not been identified so far.

Arrested: The local police has arrested Richard Alexander, a British national, for rash driving on a complaint lodged by shopkeeper Ram Bhola on Thursday.top

Dharna: A large number of panchayat chowkidars held a dharna outside the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Friday demanding regularisation of services of those who had completed 10 years.
Camp: As many as 62 persons participated in a camp organised by the District Industries Centre in collaboration with the State Bank of Patiala and the Reserve Bank of India at Bharadi on Thursday. The Regional Manager of the State Bank of Patiala, Mr R. K. Nangi, and the Reserve Bank Assistant General Manager, Mr Jagdish Lal, were present on the occasion.
