Camp
A two-day training camp for the prevention and control of communicable diseases was inaugurated by Dr P.L. Goyal, Civil Surgeon, here on Wednesday.

Grants
The Minister of State for Cooperation, Punjab, Mr Janmeja Singh Sekhon announced grants of Rs 1 lakh, Rs 50,000 and Rs 11,000 for the repair of the school building, the charitable trust and the sports club, respectively, at Toot village. He was presiding over the concluding function of the sports mela organised at the village on Tuesday.
Tributes
The Union Minister of State for Industries, Mr Sukhbir Singh Badal, visited Hussainiwala border and paid homage at the samadhis of martyrs on Tuesday. He also visited the joint check-post and distributed sweets among the security personnel of both the countries as a gesture of goodwill.

Procession
The district unit of the Non-Gazetted Employees Organisation staged a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office and raised anti-government slogans on Wednesday to press their demands which include stopping the recovery of border house rent allowance as decided by the Cabinet in November, 1997.

Training
Pre-recruitment training for the wards of ex-servicemen, their widows, serving defence personnel and the weaker sections of society will commence on September 11 in the office complex of the Deputy Director, Sainik Welfare, here. Candidates desirous of joining the Army, the paramilitary forces have been asked to report to the office on September 11 for initial screening.
Sodhal mela
The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Som Parkash, said here on Wednesday that the administration had made all arrangements for Sodhal mela, starting on September 4. The administration will provide medical care, drinking water and electricity round the clock.

Arrested
The police has arrested Pappu, a resident of Jatpura mohalla, for allegedly attacking and injuring Anup Kumar and Tara Chand.

Telephone subscribers
Telephone subscribers in the city are unhappy with the department for not redressing their grievances. Mr M.L. Verma, a resident of Udham Singh Nagar, has alleged that the department had invited complaints for being taken up in the Lok Adalat with a seven- day notice, whereas, in Patiala and Ambala districts 10 days had been given for filing complaints.

Dharna
The district unit of the Class IV Government Employees Union, Punjab, held a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office. on Wednesday and submitted a memorandum. Their demands include regularise the services of an ad hoc and daily wage employees working in the Public Health and Forest Department.

BSP activists held a protest rally here on Tuesday to demand the arrest of two industrialists who had allegedly attacked a migrant worker, a few days ago. The police has registered a case.
Five injured
Five persons were injured in a group clash at the FCI godowns near the local railway station on Tuesday. The police is investigating the case.

Anti-encroachment drive
Municipal authorities led by Mr P.J.S. Ghuman, Executive Officer, removed unauthorised constructions in New Model Town on Wednesday.

FATEHABAD

Campaign
The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Kanwar Singh Yadav, inaugurated a campaign for the elemination of congress grass here on Wednesday. He called upon the people to join hands in eleminating the weed and said the campaign would be conducted on a war footing.

Imprisonment
The Additional District and Sessions Judge, Mr J.B Sharma, has sentenced two persons, Ramesh and Rajbir, to rigorous imprisonment for raping a girl, a resident of the local Guru Nanak Pura. The Judge has sentenced Ramesh to one years' rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs 200 and Rajbir to three year's rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs 200.

Case registered
The local police has registered a case under Section 304-B of the IPC against Vinod, husband of Suman, who died under mysterious circumstances at Sirsa Kheri village of this district. The demand for dowry is alleged to be the cause of her death.

One held
The district police arrested Surjit Singh, a resident of Mand village of Jalandhar district, on Tuesday for the murder of taxi drivers. He is alleged to have killed six taxi drivers between 1989 and 1996.

Training camp
A vocational training camp was organised here by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra at Shaheed Bhagat Singh Memorial Hall here on Wednesday. As many as 30 women participated in the camp.

BILASPUR

Protest rally: The ABVP organised a protest rally at Ghumarwin on Wednesday, demanding the shifting of Government Degree College from its present location to the new building at Kallari. They also submitted a memorandum to the SDM and declared that a regular agitation would be started if their demands were not accepted by August 31.

Office-bearers
The following have been elected office-bearers of the local unit of the All India Employees Federation Postman and Group D: president — Mr Pratap Singh; secretary — Mr Bhagat Singh Thakur; and treasurer — Mr Hari Singh.

Girls missing
Sushma (14) and her sister Shyam Kali (7) have been missing since August 18 from Sarwari. Mr Jogi Dass, father of the girls, has reported matter to the police.

Tourism
Mr Rajan Sushant, MLA of Jawali constituency, presided over the 49th vanamahotsava at Dhameta on Tuesday. He announced that the state government had decided to include the Pong dam lake in tourism map of the state and the government had earmarked Rs 2 crore for developing tourist spots on the banks of the lake.

Bijli adalat
The Superintending Engineer of the HPSEB will hold a bijli adalat at Vikas Nagar here on Friday. Problems of electricity consumers will be settled on the spot.
